Comment on the call during the Steeler game.

During the Steeler/Charger game, there was a weird call that I just don't understand. The Chargers were receiving the ball, the guy made a fair catch signal and the ball hit his chest and bounced away from him. The Steeler player caught the ball and was tackeled. The call on the field was that since the Charger was making a fair catch he still needed the opportunity for the ball even though he made contact and lost control. Anyone ever saw this b4? Let me know. Was crazy.

is that the same call where the steelers had a touchdown but then it was retracted?

No, that call was when they ruled that Randel El's foot was touched but it was not, this was also near the end after the Steelers scored and kicked off. I thought if it hit the other player and they lost control, fair ball, I guess not.

Yes I saw this call, it's an actual rule though. When a player makes a fair catch he cannot be interfered with while making an attempt to secure the ball. Even if he bobbles the ball he is to be given the chance to secure it. Once the ball hits the ground then it is a live ball. Since he had not actually dropped the ball yet it was interference.

I understand the rule but the player had no way of gaining control, the ball bounced out of reach of him. Would of been miracle for him to catch it.

So based on this rule, a player can bobble the ball, perhaps make forward progress while doing so and as long as he is bobbling the ball and it does not touch the ground he cant be touched?

New way to score for those teams who have no offense

A rule is a rule though. The player from the Steelers should have waited for the ball to hit the ground and then it would have been a live ball.

IT was not a bad call, more a bad rule.

GO STILLERS!! Here is some more great speech from da'Burgh!

What is Pittsburghese? It's the unofficial language of the Steel City. From da Sahside to Sliberty, you can find Picksburghers speaking just like this. Every tahn has its own flavor, and this is just one of ours. So if you are planning to visit Dahntahn or just catch a Stillers game we suggest you learn the language of the 'Burgh

Its a stupid rule.
The rule SHOULD READ: If a fair catch is signaled and the receiver does not complete the catch, the result is a live ball.

This would have solved the problem and given the ball back to the Steelers.

I can understand the call and the result in it, however its totally stupid. I coach football too, we dont have a fair catch signal just for that. It happens all the time, a kid tries to catch it and bobbles it.. gets hit, loses the ball, other team recovers, thier ball. Minor football in quebec can get it straight & the putz in the NFL cant.. go figure.

On a fair catch yes. Which you can only call a fair catch on a punt. So there is no way to actually score, unless it actually happens for 70 or so yards which is impossible. When making a fair catch you cannot advance your position. It pins you where ever you catch the ball.

Yes it's a sucky rule, but it also protects the player making a fair catch. How can you really gauge if the person is bobbling the ball a little bit on a catch?

People on special teams are head hunters, they are not normally good enough to be starting position players so they always try to make the big hit or the big play on special teams to get the other coaches to look at them and earn points.

If there was no rule saying that on a fair catch the person attempting to catch the ball has a fair chance to secure the ball when he does in fact bobble it he's leaving himself open to get fucking decked by someone plowing down the field at full speed and unblocked. When the players who form the wall to give you room to catch the ball see you are calling for a fair catch they move out of blocking formation and just watch to see the ball is secured properly.

If this was not a rule people can come plow the person all the time and say he bobbled the ball so they hit him. Sort of takes having a fair catch out of the game.

So then the fact that the ball bounced off of the player and flew forward several yards should have nulified the rule making it a live ball correct?

I did not say the rule was the best.

What are the chances of a ball bouncing off his chest and then flying 70 yards up the field?

It was not several yards, it was right in front of him.

He did not have a chance to try and secure the ball.

I miss a good Vinny pie or a trip to the Dirty O in Oakland! Plus Primanti's has two restaurants now in Ft. Lauderdale, reminds me of da'burgh. I don't miss the cold at all.
