Defining "powerful" is subjective - but I'd say anyone who owns/operates a site that can reach and influence very large demographics of people on a global basis...is considered powerful. i.e. Ted Turner, for instance. CEO's of Google, eBay...perhaps Yahoo. Matt Drudge. Stern.

Sites belonging to publically-traded companies aren't "owned" by individuals, but shareholders. Obviously the person with the greatest amount of control would likely be the CEO:

Yahoo - Terry Semel
Google - Eric Schmidt
eBay - Margaret Whitman

But you're right...most people don't know the names behind the big corps (other than knowing Semel @ Yahoo...I had to google the other two).
