usually 2 years but now they depreciated even faster, I sold my old laptop on time but now (one year after it was release in the market) it dropped down up to 50% of its original price

Laptops get wrecked easily if you don't give them good ventilation around the machine. The last one I used had twin fans to air cool the system. I used to stack shit on top of the laptop, which is not a good idea. Also, many notebooks if used contstantly instead of a desktop rather than as a travel computer will die off quick. I ahev burned through one every 18 months, sometimes faster.

I still have a working Compaq SLT/286

It runs at a whopping 12-Mhz

It features 640k of ram expandable to 3.6 megs and a High performance 20MB harddrive.

An added upgrade was a high speed 1200 Baud internal modem

From October 1988

Anyone want to buy it?

if its a decent laptop, it can last probably around 3 yrs before you'll WANT to get a new one.

you can always upgrade, reformat, install new hardware, and etc to keep it running top notch for a few years.

I've got a lovely IBM X20 that still runs fine today. Sure, it's only 600 MHz, but day-to-day jobs and work it's fine - not to mention it weighs 3 only pounds and is just 11 x 9 x 1 inches.

I've owned about 10 now of several makes (Toshiba, Gateway, Dell, HP, IBM, Acer) and it seems to be the luck of the draw with me. My Toshiba Tecra lasted for years and years after being drop kicked in the airport, having koolaid dumped in it by a kid I was babysitting, left in a car for 3 days at 100 some degrees (my friend left it there, I had no idea) and that baby lasted until it was stolen from me. Currently my Gateway and HP are holding their own. I can't comment on the Sony or the IBM as those were also stolen from me. (1 break in to my apt about 3 years ago and one I sold and received a rubber check for)

I have a six yr hold HP. A four year old sony, and a two year old sony. I also have a friends dell, looks like it might have been the first laptop they made. lol It still works.

But as said, I hear all the techie geeks say two years is standard. Because you move it around more, heat, and pounding on the keys you are also pounding on the computer.

What do you mean exactly by "how long do laptops last"????

Do you mean, the LCD Monitor stops showing quality colors?

Do you mean your battery dies? (if this is the case you can purchase a new batery)

Do you mean, the laptop still works, but you have new models in market, and since your a fashion trend freak, you want the last of thelast??

I never understand people when they talk about this ridicolous point..

Laptops don't just die... I had 10 years old laptops and they were still working perfectly..

I think people are a littl eignorant about how a computer works, and they read somewehere about the life of a laptop and start talking bullshit.

Well, I understadn the avergae man, know shit about electronics.

A transistor don't "die"... Unless you burn or break it using a hammer.

Mine's gone strong for 4+ years. I just upgraded ram to 2 gigs and bought a 120gb HD to it. It's a 1.6ghz pentium.

I've had one of my IBM laptops for over 5 years now. I've put a little more memory in, replaced the CD player with a DVD player, replaced the battery once but the second one died ages ago so wall power only and it shows a few cracks.

Other than that it works brilliantly. It's been dropped, wet, taken around half the globe and has had to endure thousands of hours of heavy typing... the thing just won't die on me.

It's an 800Mhz celeron processor with 256mb ram but Windows XP Pro runs fine on it and I use it to surf the internet and to edit documents / program php. I won't be upgrading it until it really dies on me and if that will happen I will splash out another 2.5-3k to buy another IBM.

Seems to be about 3 years, before there's is another round of signifcant technology enhancement that's worthy of re-investing in a new one.

From personal experience, i'd say you can't go wrong with an IBM. Dell, however, tend to be shit in most fields of computing - i'd steer clear of both them and Spackard Hell if i were you.

Just remember, if you do decide to get a laptop, don't get conned into overpaying for your needs - if you don't need a DVD-RW drive then don't bother forking out the extra on a laptop with one: it'll only drain the battery power and your wallet for no real advantage.

btw what about wireless lan (wifi right?) how does that shit work.. ive heard aout 'hotspots' etc. And if i get a laptop with wifi and i wanna sit outside and work online i need a 'central' wireless modem myself right? As you prolly see i dont really know much about it.

Wi-Fi works by you either having it integrated into the laptop (ala Centrino), or buying a PCMCIA adapter that slots into the side. In order to use it, you need an access point - either you have to buy one yourself, or find one to use around your area (etc. in cafe's, or the neighbour's unsecured one ); just remember if you stump for the cafe option, most owners will usually charge you to access it.

Be careful of the saleman here though - they'll tell you that integrated (i.e. Centrino) is better... which it is - for their pockets on the commision they'll make. However, for you as a user, an adapter is just as good on a laptop that doesn't have integrated Wi-Fi, and will only set you back around GBP 5 - GBP 10 ($10 - $18ish).

I bought the 2 year extended warranty from Office Depot (on top of the 1 yr mfgr. warranty) so if mine dies anytime during the 3 year period It will be replaced.
