So is WebAir officially asking ALL new account for photo ID?

Read a few threads about this couple days ago, but ppl were saying that they ask it if something flags about you. Well, I know theres nothing to flag about me, and they still asked for photo ID. Im just wondering, if they gonna do for EVERY new account, can't they just kinda say it BEFORE you sign up and pay everything? Find it kinda annoying. Its like they already know that you probably will hesitate to signing up if you know that they will ask it, and they also know that you're probably going to give it to them after you went through all the process of signing up, giving your CC info and paying if they don't tell you beforehand. Pretty shitty.

Yup they lost my business over that, I could understand if they told you about the ID requirement BEFORE you enter your CC info, but emailing you about it afterwards is just lame.

i host with webair , never had them ask me , and if they did i wouldnt be hosting there any longer. its nothing personal , but they already have my billing info and they dont need photo i.d. besides that identity theft is at an all-time high , nobody should be sending photo i.d. to anyone for anything .. You only provide photo i.d. for it to be PHYSICALLY verified

#1 and most important reason is theres no way to verify if an i.d. is correct unless its physically present ( i.e. its useless )

This is getting more and more popular. Submitpasses.com refuses to process an order for me unless I provide a scan of my CC (front and back) and photo ID - this is despite the fact that I have purchased from them in the past.

Their reasoning is "The reason our admin refused your purchase is because one of your IP's falls in the range of a banned IP. We have been getting hit hard in the past weeks with many cheaters, we can not take anymore chances."

I can understand that, but I have purchased 2 or 3 packages from them in the past that recur monthly (and still do).

I've had one host ask me for that a long time ago. I picked up the phone to ask what it was all about and the lady was like 'nevermind, scammers usually don't pickup the phone, we'll drop that request"

She went on to explain they do it to try and scare off those that signup for hosting and bail on the bills, and a wide variety of other scams people like to run on them...

If you signup with some free email, are from a country outside of where the host's main business resides, or use names like John Doe, etc...that'll flag them to ask, and sometimes they just do it randomly to keep shit tight.

I'd host with webair even if they asked me for it. I've spoke to Mike on the phone and via IM, seems like a tight ship they run there.

They even say in the email they send you that you can EMAIL them your ID - so it would be totally trivial to photoshop up a fake ID. Totally pointless.

I really don't have an issue with someone asking for ID for something like this.

If you're willing to give them your credit card number then what's the issue with a copy of an I.D.?
It protects them because if the address and name on the I.D. match the info you gave them for billing on the credit card then they've covered their ass chargeback wise.
If they didn't do that and lost their merchant account due to high chargebacks caused by fraudulent webmasters then you'd all be bitching that you couldn't pay your hosting bill with a CC and be looking for a new host.

A few years back I took up a dedicated server from them, and not a small account. (probably costs around $800 / month if I recall correctly).

A) I was already a smaller client.

B) Pretty much everyone knows who I am. At the time, I was working for myself however, I had met Mike in person several times.

Taking those two points into account, I was asked to send in my ID. I just faxed it in.

No big deal. I never thought is was a big deal.

Now I see tons of threads regarding it. I guess I still don't see the big deal.

when i asked them 4 or 5 days ago to please cancle it since i wasnt going to use the hosting anyway.

Yeah I can't understand why all of these newbs are getting their panties in a bunch.
What are they trying to hide? Did they not give their real name? Did they use their dad's credit card because they're not 18?

These are the kinds of people you don't want as customers anyways.
Hell I'm surprised more affiliate programs don't ask for a copy of a photo ID before they send out payment.
There's so much fraud out there it's ridiculous, you can't blame Webair for trying to protect themselves and their merchant account.

Dude wait til every billing company asks for this , also i dont mind them having a copy of my ID as long as i can have copies of all his employees ID's that would have access to mine.If its not that big of deal , why dont you post yours on all your sites so your surfers know your legit ?

I do not give my ID even to the cops unless they show me thiers first.

There are privacy Laws , legaly he cant even be in possession of these peoples ID's if they ask him to destroy them after he has verified it's them.
Call your local prosecuters office an ask. I did...

Protecting themselves and annoying customers is 2 seperate things. There are additional info on ID cards than just a name and a picture. Yes, there's fraud out there towards companies, but theres also fraud or identity theft towards citizens. When you start to combine name, address, drivers licence, picture, CC, it starts to become a lot. I dont got nothing to hide either, but if theyre server once get hacked, what do you do Mr. Im so innocent? And the most important thing, if they don't want complains, WHY DON'T THEY TELL THEY WANT THAT ID BEFORE I SIGN UP?? Not after I pay.

Whats the big deal? I am sure if you ask them to destroy the id after they verify it they will. Do you think they are gonna take the responsibility of id theft for one lousy account?
I am looking for a package right now and really I don't blame them for asking for id, especially after you say you post of GFY...lol

Yup and what do you bet this company carries no insurance for idenity theft
to protect the people's info they have on file.

They say they have a 0% fraud rate wich i think is great for them,
how ever what are they doing to protect these peoples info ?
I bet they cant have the best of both worlds.

I was reading avn online and there was a thing about who's got hired by whom and it was all fake nicks. No wonder no one thinks of us as legit. I think asking for id is good too much hiding on the net.

the big problem i have is whats stopping rogue employees from selling the drivers license numbers. im not worried about the CC, im worried about that. too many companies with too much information = trouble waiting to happen.

A job at a physical office, no problem. All this info on the cyberspace?? No fucking way. If I give that info for a job I apply, I know who I gave it too. And it might get stolen if the store or office ever gets robbed. Online, gets hacked by anybody or if theres some script problems, then spread all over the internet to criminals and what not.

Cory why doesnt Wegcash ask for a new members photo ID before you guys send them a 100 porn emails a day ?

I forgot you guys wouldnt have a fraction of the data base you guys have.

It's high risk you know sending porn to minors.........

Face it people want thier privacy respected and when the people on here who dont , wait til some one steals your idenity and manages to fuck your life up for a few years.... trust me you wont feel the same.

actually the odds of identity theft happening are more likely when you go to a store and hand the clerk your credit card. Then online.

That doesn't make sense.

Also, I can see you are taking it personal, no need to try to continue this in an adult fashion.

I told you before that I sent my id in. I would have no issue sending Brad my id for an account.

That is life.

Have a good one.

This is not about credit cards. I gave my credit cards no problem, I mean, that how I paid. Drivers License combined with that, I dont want to. Thats it, ok. THEY ARE PARANOID ABOUT GETTING SCAMED? WELL IM PARANOID ABOUT GETTING MY STUFF PASSED AROUND. Do we have a deal? Why don't Ebay ask for photo, or paypal, or whatever place that deals with more money than 10 or 20 bucks a month?

Uh... identity theft is a lot more common than you think and it's growing every day.

This must be a joke. No way I would ever give my hosting those documents.

It's not about hiding something. It's about respect. They don't show respect if they ask you about that, like you were a default spammer or cheater... I hate that.

If my host ever ask me about that, I will just move on, there are thousands of companies out there nowadays to chose from.

Tony , several years ago i bought a keg for a party they made me bring a notarized copy of my ID so they could have it on file , a year or 2 later the bar was burglarised.Needless to say they took the copies and used them to get ID's CC's in other peoples names hell i even got arrested on a 2nd degree assault warrant out of Washington State wondering WTF i did.
After being in jail for 4 days the prints didnt match the guys prints who they arrested that used my ID in the first place, but he did look a bit similar to me so they held me.
Took about 3 years to get it all cleared up and thousands of dollars ,
just because some asshole had to have my ID.Hell they even got a sears card in my name and ran up it up to about $4,500 buying game tables like Pooltables and shit....

You have three simple choices.
1. give em your id
2. find another host
3. setup your own server in your own data center

And what you would do after you chose any of those options is to, "Stop Crying".

You surely have to be a bit smarter than that...

Billing is usually done via credit or debit card, which, if the hosting company or its processor wants, means that they can confirm CV2 numbers as well as the card holders' name and address. If they seek that confirmation, they will be doing so from an institution which in the vast majority of cases, has seen proof of identity in person. There are regular mail, WhoIs records and other non-intrusive ways of seeking additional confirmation if required.

All of which are more secure from both parties' points of view than copies of IDs faxed or emailed, because someone who is either committing fraud or in some other way intending to abuse the service (or a sponsor, or someone like EPassporte) is surely capable of faking those copies and likely to do so.

Certainly it sounds a little paranoid and I suspect a lot of the companies in online adult are simply copying each other without asking themselves the point. But why in our business alone, are more people starting to ask for documents which include more information than simple security demands, yet they still sidestep all/most of the proven ways to confirm identity which are commonly used by other organisations which conduct business online?

Sneding in a copy of my id is not an issue. But I do have a problem sending in a copy of a CC. And when I do send in a copy of my ID, I always make sure to black out some of the DL numbers etc.

Great, so if Webair ever gets robbed and I get accused of "running up a bill in a gay video store's backroom," I will have an idea of why.

You are one of the reasons people need copies of ids.

And I didn't post your name, address, cc numbers, I posted your board alias and what you did.

Lets keep things in perspective.

All these photo ID, for $9.95 a month purchase. Ridiculous.

I can see for a big package but for $9.95?

Real scammers would use Photoshpoed ID, this only scares away the honest people.

Do they also run a credit check?

you posted all of my wegcash id's + some not even of mine and other info that most ppl dont want out.

still pretty much a dick move.

you did it to discredit me and my word because of a prechecked cross sale thread I made and in said thread posted wegcash did have 1 prechecked cross sale.

I'll never send wegcash a trickle of traffic ever again as long as you still are employed there.

gabe, tonda, rrred, they all rock and are fucking aweome.

you, hardly on their level.

sad.

I told gabe not to even worry about sending me my checks from one of my closed accts. its that personal.

I was also asked to fax in my CC and DL when I ordered a new server from my host. At the time it was annoying as I didn't have easy access to a fax machine, and I had been a customer of theirs for 13 months already, but they stood firm.

I have a fax machine now so the request wouldn't be quite so annoying... although the customer loyalty thing still pisses me off.

One thing I will never do is send a copy "in the clear": both cards had some information blocked out. There are enough details visible for them to figure out that it's the same CC I entered into their online signup form.

Have ever and will never send any Photo ID or card information other than what is reasonable (specifically to charge a card) to any host or anyone else.

A host will have a corp name, address, phone/fax and email addresses.

Anything other than that is irrevelant. Either provide the service ordered and paid for or fuck off - it's not open for discussion.

God for bid when you prove one of these Hypocrites wrong on this board.

Like i said in the other thread , karma will come back on them , wait til every billing company requires this for adult sites and the goverment makes checking photo ID mandatory to have access to any kinda of adult site.

Or when they actully make the site owners have a copy of thier own ID on the billing form so you know who you are buying a membership from and they are legit.

Becarefull what you wish for , the day may very well come.

Do you want me to post a response?

Choose to do business over being a board persona. I will leave it alone. I am sure you do not want to rehash.
