yeah, that seems to be the case a lot of times, but the only reason that comes to be true sometimes is because the webmaster who does the design, doesn't give a shit about design... he's more interested on focusing on what he knows, which is promotion/traffic.

meanwhile designers start their own site with a great design but don't have a clue at the traffic level.

Facebook was made for college students. Just in the past year they allowed highschool students to join (which is lame as shit). Then recently they allowed EVERYONE to join (which is even lamer than shit). Now they starting putting on subtle ads.. If yahoo takes it over it will be like myspace.. FUCK THAT

I think the design doesn't have to look good to work for its users. it's like a magazine should have ads that work geared towards it readers,same goes online.

Facebook has exploded in the last three months. In Toronto alone, the amount of members has more than doubled from ~200K to ~450K in the last 6 weeks. It's staggering.
