i simply dont get the US anymore... ok, so writing a story like that isnt really of any value to very many readers but still artistic freedom should be protected by the constitution or one of the ammenments right ? the rightwinged christian holier-than-thou's in the US is currently more scary than the entire middle east fanatics put together...

It has never been different. Maybe it worked for a few glorious years in the US. But these times are over for quite a long time.

It's all about supporting their base, which is spiraling down to extreme right wing only. That, where the November election is concerned, is a good thing. The GOP never had the liberals--obviously--and has lost the moderate vote. In order to have a snowball's chance in hell of avoiding a disaster at the polls, they have to mobilize the group that still backs them, the social conservatives and religious right nutjobs.
This Foley business is a HUGE problem, because his controversy flies directly in the face of the party's pseudo-moralistic, fear-based agenda that's made the south a GOP stronghold since the introduction of the "Southern Strategy" 40+ years ago. The fact that this dipshit co-chaired the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children makes the PR nightmare even worse, and while the GOP base is unlikely to flip Demoocratic, they'll likely protest by not turning out in November.

I think its a bit overboard (ok, more than a bit) to consider a story to be threatening, and if the criteria for obscenity now is writing/talking about rape and murder, I cant wait to see when they are gonna turn their eyes toward hollywood ... or even general 11 oclock news .... oh wait, that wont happen, cause they are dirty dirty pr0n makers ...
