So far two quotes on a new roof on our house - $8200 and $8900.

That includes strippin' off three old layers, installing a replacement Velux skylight, adding five ventilators and flashing the chimney (sounds sexy, huh?).

Fuckin' bandits. But it needs to be done before the snows hit.

But wait. It gets better. The furnace is 27 years old, too.

This 'ole house is showing its 118 years.

construction is a great business, the actual roofers probably don't make much, but the construction company owner is I'm sure making a killing...

If I were twenty years younger...I'd be tempted to do it myself. But these days I ain't too fussy on carryin' shingle bundles up a 30-foot ladder to a steep pitch roof.

That said...they'll be lucky if the temps are much above freezing when the new roof goes on.

i just paid over 20K for my new roof. It's interlocked galvanized steel with no exposed screws. Rated at 135 MPH wind proof, lol (i wont be here to test it)

around here we are lucky if a roofer will even get us a quote! they are so busy they completely lack at all areas of customer service, hell we're lucky if they even call us back!! I hate dealing with contractors, but I'm learning how........call every single one in the yellow pages and ask them all to quote, then you are lucky if 3 quotes come in.............

If we get winds of 135mph, the roof would be the least of our concerns

- we have an ancient century tree on the front lawn that would undoubtedly take out the rest of the house.

Something my contractor friends and I once discussed. In most areas a good contractor is booked anywhere from 30-90 days out. Suddenly a natural disaster strikes and 20,000 homes need work.

Who the hell is able to start work on the houses? Most of them having very low insurance company limits on estimates?

we just had the roof beams treated - f'kin insect infestation. 3000 euros to inject this shit under pressure then spray everwhere. 6 hours work for 2 blokes. Bloody thieves.
Our house is 180 years old, and I've done everything myself - renovated throughout, 40m2 loft conversion, electricity, plumbing redone throughout, , but when it comes to specialist stuff, I prefer to pay the pros. Even if they are rip off merchants.

well that price doesnt seem too outlandish, but that depends on size of roof i guess.

also realize that they cant work all day, $70 an hour isnt that much when you can only work 8-9 months of the year and the other months you are not guaranteed constant work.

I had to get an emergency root canal a couple of weeks ago. The whole process took less than 90 minutes and cost $875. That's $583/hour.
