Direct TV

Who here has it? Give me the lowdown...

I've always used TWC but our line has been fucked for about two weeks and i'm getting sick of this shit. They can't find the problem and I know that just means they are going to jerk me around for a while.

Main question, does satellite still have issues with bad weather? Any other negatives with it?

What kind of an install and programming deal should I be looking for. I know there are a ton out there.

Thanks.

I've had DirecTV for 2 years. Before that, when I lived with my grandmother, I had it there for 4 years. Yes, the signal goes down during bad storms, but this usually doesnt last long. Even with the rain comming down the signal is back up sometimes.

The only reason I've ever had Direc TV is cuz of the NFL Sunday Ticket. I dont really think I'd have it if it wasnt for that.

One thing that really sucks about DTV is their customer support. Probably the worst out there.

The biggest issue that I have with sat is with bad weather, just a bit of rain can kill your signal. Sure, it'll be back up within a few seconds but if you are watching a game or something nothing will piss you off more than that. Strangely enough medium rains won’t knock out my sat, only light rain and heavy rain will… oh yeah and the occasionally jet that flies overhead.

Other negatives: Not sure if this is the same as with DTV, but with Dish Network occasionally they will have qualms with various networks over money and will sometimes lose that channel. In the channel's place they'll plaster a message about how you need to do their work for them and call up or write whoever and tell them to submit to Dish's demands lol.

Another negative: Some places (depends if you rent/own) won’t let you install things on the roof, if that’s the case you’ll have to ghetto-up your yard by putting the dish on a tripod or pole.

Big negative with DTV: Not easily hackable like Dish Network, so you can’t use FTA units and the like with it.

we have had directv for over 5 years and I can count on one hand the times it went out for more than 2-10 seconds

if you have a solid view to the sky and your dish is mounted right, you will barely ever go down

you can't beat the price for what you get, we have their total choice package, plus XM included with it now and tivo with dual tuner built into the reciever for under $60

we rarely have to call, but when we do we always get someone within 1 minute and they are totally helpful

now that they have all the cool support shit built into the reciever though, we rarely have to call

just a bit of rain shouldnt ever kill your signal as mentioned. If it does your dish is likely off alignment or something is blocking its line of sight (tree branches for example). A long cable run also could be the cause. The issue is a weak signal to begin with though if just a slight rain causes outages.

Depending where you live, you may want to consider snow. Installing it lower for example unless you like to get on your roof in January with a foot a snow.

Unless you want the NFL pass, you get more for your $ with Dish Network. I still prefer DTV though (creature of habit I guess).

Cost can add up for multiple rooms. Something to look into when you compare. No clue what you have now. Also local channels may not be available in your area if you're in more of a rural area. Ask the provider if your not sure, not a salesperson looking for commission.

Installation if you pay for it can be hit or miss. Most get paid per job (a lot of dumb sub-contractors too) and they tend to cut corners... Like not grounding your system. They also can be a shady with adding costs for work. Wall mounts, phone jacks, etc. Not all are bad of course, but I would still be there watching them if you dont install it yourself. Last thing you need is some retard tech drilling through your floor and carpet or something stupid.

You've called TWC already I assume?

If you know how to dial in a good signal you're hardly ever going to be without service.. don't worry about snow, you can buy a dish heater.

Just a quick post offering my 2 cents.
I liked the service while I had it (and I had it for many years) as long as there were no issues. In my experience their support for billing problems etc. sucks.
I canceled my service in October of last year just before I moved to Spain, and they turned it back on in July for some reason and started billing me again. When I called they canceled it (again), but they want me to pay for the 2 months that they were beaming a signal at a house I haven't lived in for a year AFTER I had canceled my service. Fuckers. And they won't resolve it over the phone. The only options I have are A. Just pay the bill and make them go away or B. Write a letter (on paper, like this is 1864) to their billing dispute department and beg them to not charge me. I'm sure if I ignore it they will send me to collections and try to fuck with my credit. In my opinion they suck in a big big way.

Glad I am in Cali with sunny weather since I do not recall ever having ANY issues with directTV... Only time it goes out is when I forget to pay my bill and get the 721 message, then I just call up and its on within two mins...

If they send it to collections dispute the debt.
They're not beaming anything "at your house"
The signal is there and they control you access to it
