Avoid GoDaddy at all costs, at all costs I repeat!

I have to admit that in my younger years I fell for the hype and registered a domain or two with GoDaddy. Only now I'm on the other end of the domain business spectrum, I've come to realise that GoDaddy is a terrible registrar, truly one of the worst (if not the worst) out there...

A few of their tactics to keep domains with them:
- No transfers away possible when whois data is shielded
- No transfers away possible for 60 days after any change to the domain - think registrant contact, nameservers (?), just anything you can imagine

They feature the most extensively cross-sale filled checkout process in the business (but Moniker comes close!).

They're not even cheap!

I beg you, please register your next domain with a decent registrar! It would make life for everyone so much easier...

My recommendation: Fabulous.com

The rule: "No transfers possible for 60 days after modifying a domain" is absolutely insane!

They also like to pass the buck and blame the other Registrar when they screw up a transfer.

I've used godaddy and they really suck big time imho.

I'm using http://www.namecheap.com & love them. No up sells, no spam , fast dns change + 1'st year who is protection is free & you can pay with paypal too if you want to.

The only time I've heard from them is when my who is subscription was going to expire once in 30 days.

They also have fast transfer if your selling a domain name & if your buyer want it even faster they can create a free account & you can push it him/her the same day & they can transfer it to where ever

I'm gonna cosign with you on this one. I had a small blog, just started so it didn't matter too much, missed the $4 billing because my paypal account was empty.

So I contact them TWICE asking them to extend it TWO days. They tell me theres nothing they can do, billing doesnt go thru, everythings deleted.

Customer lost.

Oh, forgot to mention. I did a search for a domain... nothing general, lets say it was something like stevensmithlawonline.com. It comes up as, available in the godaddy search.

So I find cheaper places that sell domains, look up the SAME domain, and its mysteriously "taken". Yet still readily available at godaddy...

Most GoDaddy complaints are baseless. For instance, all the upsells at checkout. Try clicking the "quick checkout" link next time.

As for the no transfer if privacy is turned on, this is something ICANN needs to require. It's extra protection for everyone involved.

well, I use them and I've found they're doing some nasty stuff to avoid transfers, but I've more than 1000 domains with them, so guess thye'll stay there in the meanwhile

Fabulous doesn't thrill me.

The company has attitude, and they are not even located in the US.

The only registrar I recommend is

Godaddy is not that bad. I like that feature of not being able to transfer the domain away for a period of time, if the whois details are changed. That way, if one's account is compromised, the hacker can not change the administrative contact email on the domains and attempt to transfer them away. Although, I do think 60 days is a long period of time to have to wait. I think Godaddy should change that time frame to 30 days.
