Someone says to you: "You can't be successful without a college degree."

What do you say to them?

Isn't it strange that the most essential things everyone should learn in life are not taught in schools/university?

- How to get/keep a partner
- How to be successful/make mad cash

College is for the masses and what us super ballers ultimately need to make even more money. So I for one support tertiary education.

The greatest educator is life itself.

A college degree sure helps and in this day and age, a necessity just incase you don't become a porn guru.

look at the stats - sure there ARE uneducated people who make large cash - but they are the EXCEPTION - NOT the rule. Most uneducated people who make large cash will tell you this as well and wish they had more education.

if you believe in numbers - you WILL make more money with a college degree - the more education you have the more money you will make. - assuming you eventually APPLY it somehow

those ARE the facts

Read and learn as much as you can on your own time about the industry you want to work in. It will save you time, money and your knowledge will be more up to date.

Further education is great for people that can't comprehend a world without "normal" structure. They need the classroom, the lectures, the text books. I feel education is fine the way it is to give a majority of population a decent education. It's ok, but not great. Somewhat like public transportation. It gets the job done, but it's not great.

Here is a good read for people against the typical path of school and dead end job.

I actually think a combo of self learning and college are probably the best paths to take. I only have high school and have enjoyed my route.

I "went" to college to be an accountant ... really, I would never ever want to hire 85% of my classmates. Those with the best grades, often are useless people to work with.
Everybody can learn things by heart and score good, but that doesn't mean you fully understand what stuff means.

having a college degree doesn't mean you'll be successful
having a college degree just gets through the first round when applying for a job

unless you are running your own business most places won't hire you without it. not that anyone with one is any smarter but when interviewing people you have little to go by besides such things.

Depends how you determine 'success'.

If it's in they typical monetary sense of the word then sure, a degree helps. Society dictates that, though to be successful you actually have to apply the knowledge.

It's the old 80/20 rule - whether you have a degree or not doesn't matter if you're in the 80%... though it can help fool people for a while lol

Verity raised the point - what is ranked as "success"?

Most of the folks I know who could be regarded as "successful", do have a college education. Some could have the wealth factor attached to rate that success... but others have been more than successful in other fields and don't give a toss about "wealth" - they are on a bigger mission.

It's also surprising the numbers of folks who are fairly well-known in their fields of expertise and who are not wealthy, but command respect because of who they are.

Suppose success is what you make of your life, how you relate to others and what you may achieve in some form etc - whether there is a college education or not. "Success" usually comes in the form of a marathon, - life never was a sprint

I remember directly after high school most of my friends went onto college. I had graduated six months prior and was already a US Marine. I visited my friends in college, mostly old girlfriends. I was stunned at what I saw - Thousands of students living the good life while Mommy & Daddy foot the bill. It reminded me of what I pictured life as a hippie to be in the 60's. They never seemed to attend class. At the same time I was dragging a machine gun through the mud supporting myself; I wasn't sure if I was jealous or pissed.

One of them was in school to study Marine Biology and how she was going to be making the big bucks after college.

Twenty years later I have to laugh.

The girl who went to college for Marine Biology works at a bookstore and STILL doesn't have her driver's license. Another girl I dated works at Disney. All of them have crappy jobs in middle management at companies no one has ever heard of and could care less.

I went to college later in life during the computer boom. I went to a full time school, meaning you showed up every day in full dress code. I'm glad I went; I can build a computer from the ground up and trouble shoot anything, which I surely didn't know before I went. But in the real world it's worthless.

Back in the day in order to make money you had to go to college. But I think that's changed. Now the real money is in going into business for yourself.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "man, I wish I didn't have a degree!"

I dropped out of college for a variety of reasons. Would love to have a degree in political science or history though, simply out of basic interest. Hopefully some day when I have more free time and my future finances handled I'll be able to start working towards one.

Sleazy is pretty much right. People who make "big bucks" without a good education are not the norm, but neither are people who make "big bucks" WITH a good education. If you want to make bank, you need to put forth the time and effort, take advantage of opportunities, sacrifice, and be able to see the big picture. Not counting those "born into money", no successful person has taken the easy route in life.

Me? I doubt I'll ever consider myself successful. There's always another level of life I want to hit.

Yeah, what he says here. Last two employers were high school drop-outs. I was there driver and security. Both of them were billionaires. But, they are the exception to the rule. I wish I had a university degree myself. Would have made more money sooner in my life.

I'd tell them that my boyfriend works for Pepsi Co and is making twice the amount as my mom, a school teacher, is making and I make more than any 9-5 desk job could ever give me, and I don't have to fight rush hour traffic, to boot!

you can't become a lawyer, doctor, physicist, etc without going to school. there are a lot of professions you just can't go after without many years of education. but most people are dumb and go for the easy fluff majors.

starting your own business and working for yourself is something anyone can do. you don't need an education. you can't however start practicing medicine or law without the education. it's easy for us to say you don't need a college degree. we work in an industry in which you don't need one.

Everyone used to tell me that since my age of 14..... i am now 22 and they see they were wrong
Now all of them keep saying that college diploma is good to have as backup, lol
but most important is how your brain works in real life, couse school is one thing and real life totoally different

i would say "fuck.. you"

just like i do to my best friend

hes so jealous of my "job"...

i don't know how many times we got into an arguement and hes like "why don;t you get off your lazy ass and get a real job like i have... i get up at blah blah blah and bust my ass working in a factory job while you sit on your ass at home all day long!"

then i piss him off even more by saying "yeah, and i make double what you make, so shut your fucking trap"

heh, I wouldn’t say gfy, but I would feel sorry for that persons outdated outlook on the world. College prepares you to be a high paid employee, and if that’s what you want than fine. But most people seemingly do not spend the time to really look into the future and see what works for them.

Not that I am a big success by any means, but I believe strongly that ones own ability to function and make money in the absence of a job is awesomely important, seeing as how today your job is not so stable.

It's an arrogant & ignorant statement.
