Why is WoW so addictive? I never played it

I've never played WoW but am thinking of it.
I saw the Leroy Jenkins video and the game didn't look that great in the video. All the characters looks like little smooshed down things. It looked OK but I dont understand why this game is a phenominon after seeing that video.

So why is it so addictive?

For the love of god man! Stay away! You'll lose large portions of your life, and suffer from blackouts akin to a 5 day bender.

Like any MMO...

They provide Joe Sub-Average peeps with the ability to be an avatar of their making that enjoys rewards that are both more easily come by and a lot more fantastic (in a make-believe sense) than real life.

They're cool in moderation, but I've seen peeps lose their entire souls to them.

it can be addictive for a few reasons. One is that nothing happens fast in the game. You can't just log in and play for 20 minutes then log off. It will take you 20 minutes just to get to where you want to go. Also it really is a virtual world. It has it's own economy, social structure, vocabulary and rumor mill all created by and controlled by the players. When you get higher in level you can start grouping with people to do some big dungeons. These things take between 5 and 40 players to do and can take anywhere from 2-6 hours or longer so they are a major commitment. If you want to put together an armor set you may have to run these dungeons dozens of times. So I think much of the addiction is that it really takes time to gain power and then when you do the other players really look up to you and it allows the average person to be cool and have "fans" or be known as a "badass"

Isn't it like Dungeons and Dragons on the interweb?

Just think of those geeks next time you want to play it.

I played that game a lot.. Until I become high level enough to start doing raids. When you participate in raids, your guilds usually require you to login on to VENT (voice communication software that all WoW guilds use). For the first time, I actually heard my WoW peers speak. 99% of them are guys that will never see a vagina (in person), and you can tell this from all from their voices and their ridiculous senses of humor, their whining and their constant crying. That was the anti-wow vaccine for me. These were people I dont think I could ever stand to be around in person, and I certainly am not going to spend my time online with them! Cured my addiction

I totally agree with you. Some of those suckers never see the light of the day, nor have ever licked a wet cooter. They find escape in 6h raid shifts, countless wipes and completing their tier 3 sets.

Who am I kidding, I was hooked helplessly too a year ago... now I simply buy accounts, PVP with a new class for a few weeks and then sell the toon for a profit.

The reason it is so addictive is that it is a never-ending game.

The user feels he always needs to continue on and be better than everyone else raising levels to prove superiority.

I have a few friends that are addicted to similar games as well as WOW. Like final fantasy X, another online open ended game.

I never played WOW either, I'll stick to using my endless hours making money.

They've improved it a little with the new PvP system. You don't lose honor anymore every week, you simply accumulate it / save it and then redeem it for new gear. Pretty nice, you can go on your own pace.

I've managed to stay away from WoW, especially after seeing what it's done to some of my friends' social lifes.

I used to be a game master for Blizzard and WoW (google "Chris Hartgraves")

It is addicting because of the connections you make in game and the constant need to get to that next level

It's a fun game. Both my wife and I play. For me it's a great stress relief, for her, a chance to "get away" or take a break from being a new mom. I would say we play a little every night and it has become nice as we are both involved in it together, same guild, realm etc. BUT we did go out and buy some board games over xmas...

This is basically right on. There is a community that develops. Also as mentioned in other posts it is neverending and the more time you put into it the more powerfull you get.

So you have a peer group that supports you spending endless hours to get more powerfull.

Unless you have no real life friends and no life, it really aiin't that bad. It's very repetitive... weeks of killing monsters. It's pretty damn cool to play, try it.

I think the reason why it's so addictive is that you can become somebody easily behind a computer screen...

I saw this really funny "fake" commercial where a girl was complaining that her boyfriend was always bothering her for sex so she got the ultimate libido killer, World of Warcraft. By the time the guy was level 20 he didn't even know she existed anymore. it's pretty funny.

Yup, same reason that people get addicted to chat rooms, and stupid little gaming sites like pogo.com.... people can be anyone they want when they're behind a computer screen.

In WoW, you can be a hero... a champion. That feeling can be like a drug that you just want more of.
