Has all the stiff penalties for spammers (mailing) gone out of the window?

Don`t get me wrong...it was rediculous that spammers were jailed in those much public incidents some time back, just that I seem to be getting more and more shit in my mail daily which means so much fucking deleting.

Have those threat tactics died of death for heavy spammers?

For the most part, spam mail these days is almost entirely dominated by stock pump and dump scams (using infected PCs for mailing, almost all of the scams coming from eastern block countries), "Canadian Pharmacy" scams, phishing, and viruses. This year has been entirely light for things like christmas products or even porn spam (one idiot keeps it up daily... doorknob).

More and more people are turning email off entirely or using whitelist software such as spamarrest or similar to really limit the spam they even seen, which is in turn making spamming less and less profitable.

When the profit goes away, the scammers move on to other stuff, like installing Zango or buying traffic from them.

Interesting. So you would agree that this recent top 10 weekly list from Spamhaus is accurate or just that the Eastern European issues are conveniently not recorded?

1 United States 2053
2 China 372
3 Russia 241
4 Japan 231
5 South Korea 171
6 Canada 167
7 United Kingdom 146
8 Hong Kong 143
9 Taiwan 134
10 Netherlands 121

Fuck jail. They should be executed. A dead spammer wont be sending anymore spam. The I-CAN-SPAM act legalized spam, so now we have more of it than ever before. We were actually getting somewhere when we had a dedicated group of individuals suing the piss out of them. But then Congress had to get involved and pass a law with no private right of action, making it so the only people that can sue are the fucking states attorneys general. If I could have a billion dollars for every time an attorney general has helped me or anyone I know prosecute a spammer I'd be eating Raman noodles for the rest of my life.

Sexus, the numbers reflect where the email is sent from, not the "source". The common deal is to take over end user's PCs, running them as spam zombies. With so many people having DSL and cable modems, it is really quite and effective way to spam, especially for spams that don't require people to take any action online (stock spams, example). The source of many of these zombie take overs are eastern block countries.

Try google. I am sure you can find the whole story over there.

RawAlex is right, the zombie machine is the way things are done these days. Over 3 years ago I had my ISP shut me down because they said I was spamming. I had no clue what they were talking about. Turns out I had my machine taken over.

No, its not. And if I thought it would help the problem, I'd be in favor of executing their family 3 generations back to ensure that the disease dosen't spread.

uhhh, I take it you're unaware that your precious hosting company was/may still be listed under the ROKSO for sending massive amounts of spam?

Its not "my" company, I just support them through my sig. Yes, I am very well aware of it because my server is in the range of the block. They said it was a mistake of some sort.

I would like to see the 4 paper delivery boys in my local area executed also. I have asked them multiple times not to put any junk mail into my letterbox but they still do it. Jail won't stop these monsters, once they get out they'll be 10years old and ready for another paperboy job. They need to be taken down as early as possible so that I don't need to spend 30 seconds a day clearing out my letterbox.

lol yeah a mistake, i knew several that hosted there - myself included. fact is pre-2003 the majority of hosting companies allowed you to mail and post 2003 a lot let you mail if you didnt get a lot of complaints.

believe it or not a good deal of people - most of the larger guys i knew - are totally out of the game.

ended with lawsuits, fines, and more legal bullshit than you can imagine. and a TON of people got sued for much more than they ever made.

executed? please. get ahold of your emotions pup. keep on believing that the world is tranquil and nice and that the biggest crime against humanity is that you can't read your fucking yahoo inbox without seeing h00dia ads.

Exactly. The Can Spam law set forth legal laws for mailing, making it legal to mail.

Nice job!

and for the record rokso are by far the most asinine collection of people i've ever had the pleasure of knowing. you can get your company listed their if your _name_ comes up in conversation with a spammer. just the mention of it. they need no proof and aren't held accountable for anything. from there you're "investigated" by the army of fucktarded antispammers chanting EXECUTE HIM like a lynch mob. if they find anything even remotely related to email or complaints against you, your phone number will be listed on every site known to man, you'll receive death threats, bomb threats, etc..

If you are talking about paid newspapers, then dont subscribe and you wont get the paper. If you are talking about free trash papers, I share your hatred of those and if you give me your e-mail address I'll send you a very effective form letter I have used to get rid of those once and for all. Basically, you send the letter to the publisher's headquarters by registered mail, restricted delivery, to top guy (published, chief editor, etc) and the letter acknowledges receipt of the trash and explains that if they continue to deposit papers at your house, they will be contracting with your family for certain recycling and disposal services which cost $500 per paper. Then, the letter explains that they'll get a bill for services if they continue because their credit is good with you, and it briefly explains the unpleasantness of the collections end of your enterprise. I always include a picture of the thing they deposited (just take a pic with the camera, print it out on the laser printer in B&W, just so they can see it is theirs) and include that. Has worked EVERY time for me thus far.

Taking a shot in the dark here, but I have a feeling your success in this business has been quite limited. Have you ever considered spending less time contacting every "publisher's headquarters", every host, ISP etc. and more time working?

Get a grip man. Productivity or insanity, the choice is yours. It's evident where you currently reside.

Email is one thing. Real junk is another. Takes 2 seconds to press delete but takes 30+seconds to walk outside and manually remove the crap from my mailbox. I'd love to get a copy of the letter from you! - doot542 at pimpinpays dot com -

Sometimes I think putting a shredder behind my mailbox slot would be the fastest way to dispose of it.
