They have a hella light show. I know cause I Set it up and tore it down last year.

And both versions are good NIN and Johnny Cash version. Which first person who said it was correct. Was popular way before he died.

Fuckin douche bag 28 year old fat webmasters that were in their prime (highschool, because they had 3 friends) when NIN was trendy need to keep their god damn NIN comments to themselves. Hijacking asshats that produce random uncalled for trivia are not needed.

I find it pretty funny that several of you are trying to discount NIN because they aren't as "cool as Cash". LOL.

Both versions of the song are great. Cash was able to use his mainstream influence to bring the song to a larger audience. Saying NIN should "shove it" is just retarded. The list of cover songs made famous by the covering band is huge, it doesn't make the original artist any less of an artist, they wrote the damn song to begin with.

Johnny Cash revived a dead song and turned it into something bigger than NIN has ever done.

I remember from high school the type of people who liked NIN. They were all stoners. There was one group of them that thought it would be funny to carve "NIN" into the football field the night before homecoming.

NIN wasn't dead. Neither was their song. They sell out all of their shows. In fact, tickets are pretty really hard to get.

Do you guys have any idea what you're talking about or are you just guessing?

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

"Hurt" is a promotional single from Nine Inch Nails' remix album Further Down the Spiral (Halo Ten). Originally from 1994's The Downward Spiral, "Hurt" and its remixes were released as a radio-only single to promote Halo Ten the following year. "Hurt" is often hailed as one of Trent Reznor's best, most introspective pieces of songwriting.

In 2002, "Hurt" was covered by Johnny Cash to great critical acclaim; it was Cash's final hit before his death. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash's life up to his final months, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and Country Music Awards. Cash's video was directed by Mark Romanek.

to quote trent reznor

"Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore"

Reznor still occasionally refers to "Hurt" as "a song that isn't mine anymore."

Love this quote when the cover came out...

Mark Romanek was so deeply affected by Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor's "Hurt", he offered (and begged) to shoot the video for free. Upon doing so, he sent the video to Trent Reznor. Reznor was in session with Zach de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine fame) at the time, and they were reportedly so awestruck emotionally that they had to leave the room and recuperate, Reznor himself being moved to tears.

no wants to hear this, but Johnny Cash is overrated and his cover of that song is waaay overrated - it's funny, about 5 years ago liking Johnny Cash wasn't cool at all and now he has all this street cred 'cuz of the film and Rick Rubin. He wrote repetitive rockabilly music - Rick Rubin's production is the only thing responsible for making him sound current or "edgy"

He was a good lyricist, I'll give him that, but that song was a NIN classic - and a cover can never remotely stand up to the original

Cash never went out of style. Not once. You just dont get the reason his version got so much popularity. His voice is warbly, he was knocking at deaths door. Im from Nashville and we heard about it everytime he was at Baptist hospital battling Pnemonia. I remember 3 or 4 times they didnt think he would make it, and at least one time was prior to cutting that album and making that video. There is a reason it was so popular, and you are missing it.

nah, I get it, and I like Cash. I just think it pales in comparison to the original. And, altho I am a bit touched by it, I also have a feeling that he doesn't totally identify with the lyrics and it's more somber then his natural style. For example, he changed the line "crown of shit" to "crown of thorns"

Rick Rubin picked out all these edgy songs for Cash to cover and his production is what brings out the starkness and sadness of the song too. I think Rubin is the best producer on the planet right now. I like Cash all right, it's just when some stupid kids say "I don't want to hear anything about NIN, this is all about Cash's song, Hurt"

Yea, except it's not his song, it's a NIN song - so Respect. The cover is well-performed and well-produced, but it's a COVER. It's like the Dixie Chicks covering Stairway to Heaven - yea, they might do a fine job, but it's still not Led Zeppelin.

and you sir, just nailed it

I love nine inch nails, and I have always loved johnny cash...but the song fit SO_WELL into johnny cash's life at the time he sang it...and when he sang it live at that awards show, oh fuck, I lost it....everyone knew he was about to die, and half the audience was in tears

I will tell you this, and realize i do like nine inch nails, but johnny cash is one of the greatest entertainers of our time, he touched more lives and sang from his heart more than any whiney trent reznor ever did...

1. The song itself was a hit before Cash died. It was a NIN song that was very popular. It really only became popular for him after he died.

2. No. NIN took the song to #2 on the billboard top 200 charts back in the mid 90's (cash's version made it to #22 on the billboard top 200 and #2 on the country chart.) although it did become a big country hit for Cash.

3. It had been a while since he had a huge hit. He has had some successful records but the last time he had a record go to #1 was in 1969 so it had been a while.

You can argue all day about which version of this song is better. I'm a fan of both Cash And Reznor. I like the sound of Reznor's version and the bleakness of it. Cash's version is raw and emotional and I think both are great.

I disagree but that's neither here nor there - everytime I hear Cash sing this song, I hear the sadness but I also feel like I can hear him thinking in the back of his head "why the hell am I singing these whiny goth rock lyrics - what the hell is wrong with the kids today?" LOL - just like what you said here "sang from his heart more than any whiney trent reznor ever did"
Cash was a man's man and I just don't think the song was his STYLE - that's my problem with it - the song FITS better when Trent sings it because Trent believes the words - the whole song is SOOOOO Trent - Cash's style of lyrics and music is totally different - I just think the original artist is always going to be so much better because they wrote it

NO it was popular BEFORE he died.

It won an mtv Music award 20 days before he died. August 28th it won, and he died the day after the anviversy of 911 on Sept 12th 2003 I remember it quite clearly. His diabetes is what finally did him in.

It was popular before he died, but it exploded in popularity afterwards. He released the song in Nov 2002. It peaked on billboard late in sept. early nov 2003.

munchkin

ive read the rest of your posts -

dude weve spoken about music and were both musicians but brother you really got your head up your ass (trents really) on this one.

"Johnny Cash is overrated ... He was a good lyricist, I'll give him that"

i cant reply to anything you posted, the severity of what you wrote about Cash as a musician doesnt justify a reply and desimates any musical cred you had.

edit - i saw the post above - true, to each his own - dont take this the wrong way either

ok you said great singer - half you cred is gone

You're absolutely right - I just don't care for rockabilly as a music form, it isn't really taking music anyplace new IMO - it's very basic - kind of the way a lot of people feel about hip hop - so, for that style of music he's not overrated - but I think the whole style is overrated - there's not a single artist in that style that I would really listen to. I never said any of this was anything but my own personal opinion, heh.

He seemed like a cool no bullshit kind of singer and I give him nothing but props for that. I actually just watched the movie for the first time 2 nights ago and it was very inspiring. And Reese Witherspoon was looking adorable, I fell in love with her a little I think, heh. I have nothing against Cash at all, I only get perturbed when the original artists don't get the credit they deserve...

yea, I don't think our musical tastes ever really lined up much from when we talked, heh. It's all good, man, it's just different flavors, like some guys like fat chicks and some guys like 'em thin. My favorite music tends to be pretty progressive artsy rock-oriented (A Perfect Circle, Tool, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley) so bluegrass & rockabilly is about the worst sounding crap in the world to me, heh. But there's people that feel the same way about art rock. Doesn't matter to me - that's what turns my gears and what turns me on. Rockabilly may turn you on. Then rock on with it - enjoy it. Doesn't mean you're not a good musician, doesn't mean I'm not, just different flavors. And Cash had a powerful low baritone that is one of the most distinctive voices ever put on record. That makes him a great singer. He didn't have any range and he wasn't always on key but he was distinctive and that makes a great singer way more then the other shit... A voice you can remember is the most important thing for a lead singer, way more important then always being 100% technically perfect... It's 5am here, I'm out, have a good one...

He wrote repetitive rockabilly music - Rick Rubin's production is the only thing responsible for making him sound current or "edgy"

He was a good lyricist, I'll give him that, but that song was a NIN classic - and a cover can never remotely stand up to the original
Repetitive rockabilly music? Johnny Cash revolutionized music and helped shape it to what it is today. To classify Johnny Cash under one genre shows ignorance and a complete lack of knowledge when it comes to his music. I can only assume you've heard maybe a couple of his songs to come to this conclusion.

The one thing that made Cash so special was that he wasn't part of any genre. He could do Rock & Roll, Country, Blues, Gospel, and just about every other genre out there. He was even considered the Godfather of Gangsta Rap. Country music is popular and mainstream largely in part to what Johnny Cash did.

His entire career featured him going outside the box in his music. He switched genres, broke the molds of what people felt country music should be, wrote lyrics that people had never heard before. That is what made him edgy, not covering some Nine Inch Nails song.

both versions are very good songs..it just shows that a good singer can make a cover there own rather than the boring clone covers that are put out so much. Cash's version is like a punch in the gut when you watch it with the video.

Did you read the subject line, fuckhead? It doesn't say "any version you like - hurt" It says Johnny Cash.

dood give the other shit a listen sometime - tool, radiohead, jeff buckley are 3 of my absolute favorites. i used to hate anything i thought "countryish" but neil young bridged that gap for me long ago, and opened the door to really like some other stuff (johnny cash for example). i dont like every tune but he definitely has some fucking jewels. my favorite is the beast in me WOW!

1) Before, I believe VH1 had it as their song of the year in 2002.

2) When he worked with Rick Rubin it opened him up to a lot more people. Prior to that he was mainly appreciated (or disliked) in the country music scene.

3) couldnt tell ya Im afraid without looking it up.

You need to stop in at Roberts on broadway here in Nashville a few times, you might change your mind.

Oh and it was wildly popular as soon as the video was released. There were links to the video online getting put up all over the internet and it was well before he died.

Cash's cover is great, but i wouldn't call it his song now. The original is still just as good. There are still so many people out there who don't know its not a Cash . My parents didn't know, and when they found out they were kind of disappointed.
