Fuckin douche bag 28 year old fat webmasters that were in their prime (highschool, because they had 3 friends) when NIN was trendy need to keep their god damn NIN comments to themselves. Hijacking asshats that produce random uncalled for trivia are not needed.

I find it pretty funny that several of you are trying to discount NIN because they aren't as "cool as Cash". LOL.
Both versions of the song are great. Cash was able to use his mainstream influence to bring the song to a larger audience. Saying NIN should "shove it" is just retarded. The list of cover songs made famous by the covering band is huge, it doesn't make the original artist any less of an artist, they wrote the damn song to begin with.

Johnny Cash revived a dead song and turned it into something bigger than NIN has ever done.
I remember from high school the type of people who liked NIN. They were all stoners. There was one group of them that thought it would be funny to carve "NIN" into the football field the night before homecoming. |

to quote trent reznor
"Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore" Reznor still occasionally refers to "Hurt" as "a song that isn't mine anymore." |

Love this quote when the cover came out...
Mark Romanek was so deeply affected by Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor's "Hurt", he offered (and begged) to shoot the video for free. Upon doing so, he sent the video to Trent Reznor. Reznor was in session with Zach de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine fame) at the time, and they were reportedly so awestruck emotionally that they had to leave the room and recuperate, Reznor himself being moved to tears. |

no wants to hear this, but Johnny Cash is overrated and his cover of that song is waaay overrated - it's funny, about 5 years ago liking Johnny Cash wasn't cool at all and now he has all this street cred 'cuz of the film and Rick Rubin. He wrote repetitive rockabilly music - Rick Rubin's production is the only thing responsible for making him sound current or "edgy"
He was a good lyricist, I'll give him that, but that song was a NIN classic - and a cover can never remotely stand up to the original ![]() |

Rick Rubin picked out all these edgy songs for Cash to cover and his production is what brings out the starkness and sadness of the song too. I think Rubin is the best producer on the planet right now. I like Cash all right, it's just when some stupid kids say "I don't want to hear anything about NIN, this is all about Cash's song, Hurt" Yea, except it's not his song, it's a NIN song - so Respect. The cover is well-performed and well-produced, but it's a COVER. It's like the Dixie Chicks covering Stairway to Heaven - yea, they might do a fine job, but it's still not Led Zeppelin. |

I love nine inch nails, and I have always loved johnny cash...but the song fit SO_WELL into johnny cash's life at the time he sang it...and when he sang it live at that awards show, oh fuck, I lost it....everyone knew he was about to die, and half the audience was in tears I will tell you this, and realize i do like nine inch nails, but johnny cash is one of the greatest entertainers of our time, he touched more lives and sang from his heart more than any whiney trent reznor ever did... |

2. No. NIN took the song to #2 on the billboard top 200 charts back in the mid 90's (cash's version made it to #22 on the billboard top 200 and #2 on the country chart.) although it did become a big country hit for Cash. 3. It had been a while since he had a huge hit. He has had some successful records but the last time he had a record go to #1 was in 1969 so it had been a while. You can argue all day about which version of this song is better. I'm a fan of both Cash And Reznor. I like the sound of Reznor's version and the bleakness of it. Cash's version is raw and emotional and I think both are great. |

Cash was a man's man and I just don't think the song was his STYLE - that's my problem with it - the song FITS better when Trent sings it because Trent believes the words - the whole song is SOOOOO Trent - Cash's style of lyrics and music is totally different - I just think the original artist is always going to be so much better because they wrote it ![]() |

It was popular before he died, but it exploded in popularity afterwards. He released the song in Nov 2002. It peaked on billboard late in sept. early nov 2003.

ive read the rest of your posts - dude weve spoken about music and were both musicians but brother you really got your head up your ass (trents really) on this one. "Johnny Cash is overrated ... He was a good lyricist, I'll give him that" i cant reply to anything you posted, the severity of what you wrote about Cash as a musician doesnt justify a reply and desimates any musical cred you had. edit - i saw the post above - true, to each his own - dont take this the wrong way either ![]() ok you said great singer - half you cred is gone ![]()

He seemed like a cool no bullshit kind of singer and I give him nothing but props for that. I actually just watched the movie for the first time 2 nights ago and it was very inspiring. And Reese Witherspoon was looking adorable, I fell in love with her a little I think, heh. I have nothing against Cash at all, I only get perturbed when the original artists don't get the credit they deserve... |

The one thing that made Cash so special was that he wasn't part of any genre. He could do Rock & Roll, Country, Blues, Gospel, and just about every other genre out there. He was even considered the Godfather of Gangsta Rap. Country music is popular and mainstream largely in part to what Johnny Cash did. His entire career featured him going outside the box in his music. He switched genres, broke the molds of what people felt country music should be, wrote lyrics that people had never heard before. That is what made him edgy, not covering some Nine Inch Nails song. |

both versions are very good songs..it just shows that a good singer can make a cover there own rather than the boring clone covers that are put out so much. Cash's version is like a punch in the gut when you watch it with the video.

dood give the other shit a listen sometime - tool, radiohead, jeff buckley are 3 of my absolute favorites. i used to hate anything i thought "countryish" but neil young bridged that gap for me long ago, and opened the door to really like some other stuff (johnny cash for example). i dont like every tune but he definitely has some fucking jewels. my favorite is the beast in me WOW!

1) Before, I believe VH1 had it as their song of the year in 2002.
2) When he worked with Rick Rubin it opened him up to a lot more people. Prior to that he was mainly appreciated (or disliked) in the country music scene. 3) couldnt tell ya Im afraid without looking it up. |

Cash's cover is great, but i wouldn't call it his song now. The original is still just as good. There are still so many people out there who don't know its not a Cash . My parents didn't know, and when they found out they were kind of disappointed.
