How big is your house? And are you heating a pool?

My total electric bill is around $200, but I only pay a third.

It's only 2,000 sq ft. SMALL for a house...

But it's 30 years old. Hubby inherited it....

So I guess it means we need to redo windows, eh? The airhandler is new. but I bet it's our insulation and house layout that blows.

God you guys are so cheap to get by...

No one has even mentioned their hair, clothes, nails accounts for the month, heehee...

Strange, 30 years really isn't that old. My house is about the same size, a little over 50 years old, horrible insulation and bad windows... $700 electricity bills would have me screaming, lol.

I don't have central air though, I'm sure you do in Houston and take full advantage of it.

ok I will admit it, I misread the topic.

The title said "how much $ does it cost for you to live each month? " without mentioning that it's only about bills...

I had to figure this out a few months ago: $6K is my average, but I can bump that down to about $3-3.5 if I needed too. For instance, if I was dead broke, I think I could do w/o the satellite package with everything for $100 a month and the extra phone line I fax on maybe once a month ;) I could also get rid of a car, get higher deductibles on insurance, cut down on eating out, don't go to ATL 1-2 times a week, etc. Lots of ways to lower it. I'm a big overspender

Also if you own a home, you have to include maintenance in there that might not happen but once every few years. For instance I had the house restained - $7K. But it was the first time in 10 years and I won't have to do it again for another 6-7. BUT when you average it out, that's almost another $100 a month.

Replacing things like hot water heaters, furnaces, w/d, fridges, etc. also comes into play that you have to average in there.

I haven't added it up in over 10 years. Not sure I want to. No house payment or car payments though. That's all paid for. Everything else is just maintenance, existing, and having fun.

Highest electric bill I've had in almost 6 years is $160 and that's electric EVERYTHING - hot water, cooking, heat and AC.....I have propane for my backup generator, auxillary heater and gas logs. about 2300 sq with a vaulted ceiling for the top two floors. Log homes are GREAT insulators and I have a ton of hardwood trees that shade during the summer I have double paned windows too.

I fill the propane tank about once a year - $1.49 per gal last fill, 330 gallons (300 gallons really because they don't fill over 90%). I could cut that down a lot by not starting the fireplace everytime it drops below 50 degrees Water is included in our HOA fees - $300ish a year for water for everyone who has a house - works out great for the 1/2 of us who live here full time, sucks for those who have vacation homes. Septic tank so no sewer fees. Garbage collection also included in HOA fees but we have to take our trash to the dumpsters.

When I lived in the burbs I had to pay something like $3 a month for street lights

2,000 sq.ft. is far from being a small house. It's actually quite big IMO.

Roughly around $2k per month. Which includes home morguage, utilities bills (gas, water, elec), food, net conection/cable/phone, health insurance.

Some months it fluctuats if bills are more than avg or if say car/house rego is due or things like that. A bonus to not living in the central CBD areas, are things are cheaper.

Not including cars, insurance or business expenses:

$1600/month rent
$300-$400/month electric
$40/month gas but somehow up too $500/month in the winter and its always freezing in here
$30/month water
$200 or more a week for food and household supplies

So, around $3k a month on average not including luxury items and business expenses. All in all, betwen $6 and $10k a month. Sigh

You're still paying insane amounts for a house that size in Houston. I know many people with much bigger houses and they're bill is never even close to half of that even with a pool.

Poorly insulated houses are a killer. Since the hubby inherited it, take the money you WOULD be paying for a house payment and get it in shape. Most utilty companies (gas, electric) will come out for free and show you where problems are. We had a 3400 sq home before this one with $500-600 electric/gas every month because it was so poorly insulated.

I'm having problems with the AC running in basement even with the vents closed, but I saw some magnetic vent covers I'm going to try. The basement is almost toally subterrain so it's cold there already and with the thermostat on the next floor up, the basement is like ice and I'm sure I'm losing AC there.

Hell, it could be something as simple as turning down the thermostat on the water heater.

$350 a month for living expenses.
$1400 a month for weed and Hot Wheels diecast cars, I buy quite a few fairly expensive little cars ever month.

$4k will cover it all. I have 2 boys living at home, so that adds to it.

I live in the Philippines. It totally depends WHERE you want to live here and WHAT your lifestyle expectations are.

NORMALLY, $500 to $1K a month is fine for mid to lower level accommodations and lifestyle. If you live LARGE it will be more but that's the same for everywhere in the world. The only difference is its GENERALLY cheaper to live "large" here.

my electric bill is $1000-1200/mo or so..

www.energypricesarekilling.com is a little site i made about it to send to the media

my total expenses between my gf and i (i support her, she's a student) are about 5k/mo.. we rent an apartment in orange county. if we owned a house, it'd be around 8k/mo
