Haha Careful Rochard. They have a movie made by a guy who was almost president. He had colorful graphs and stories about poor polar bears who couldnt swim in the ocean. Its pretty compelling.

All this is a great example of the "cry wolf" type effect. People are so used to be lied to by officials that even when faced with a ton of evidence, as long as anyone raises doubt they are willing to believe in said doubt.

Congratulations folks... the propaganda machine has finally won. All they have to do is raise a doubt and you ignore straight scientific proof. I wonder if a bunch of politicians decided to declare the earth was flat again how many people would say the scientists just want us to believe it's round.
No no. The propaganda machine is the one saying global warming is true. The one that helps perpetuate the grants that scientists get to "study" global warming. What happened to the impending ice age mark? You recall that from the late 70's? You know the reason that green peace was started in the first place? How bout soil erosion? How bout how deforestation is going to make us have to produce oxygen cause there will no longer be any trees.. Its a new horror every few years. Yawn. They put together some flashy graphics now everyone is sooo scared. Silly.

for one, BUSH has little impact on global warming, just like Gore wouldn't be able to do jack shit to stop it if he was president...There are third world countries all over the world who don't give a shit about the environment and release all kinds of toxins into the air....in alot of countries, it is customary to still BURN their garbage.

I'm gonna go with that one . . . like it didn't snow in western euro until the 1100-1200's cause we are now in or are coming out of a mini ice age . . stuff like that and the fact that if you study the numbers instead of the hype, the temp rise is insignificant . . .

Hey, if it's all gloom and doom, why are people even bothering discussing it? Because you have a point of view that isn't backed by anything other than hearsay and a conceptual coping mechanism?

You need to look at what's happening at the poles - the entire Larson B ice shelf disintegrated last year - that's an area 10x Texas. All in one go. Ice is retreating faster than it ever has on record, and is exponentially rising.

Why is it exponential? Because the white of the ice reflects the sun and prevents warming of ocean underneath it. As more melts because of increases in air temperature, then more dark ocean is exposed to the sun and warms up, causing more ice to melt, exposing more ocean etc etc.

You may be successful in your line of work, because you're good. Have the decency to acknowledge that the world's most specialised scientists on climatology are good at theirs and what they say is correct.

There is more evidence than I can take in to scientifically state that what we are seeing is not the 'natural breathing' of our planet and is very close to reaching the point of no return - that is the polar icecaps will continue melting even if atomospheric CO2 levels went back to 'normal'.

Don't be selfish and thing of those that will use our planet when we have all gone.

Its also not worth mentioning that the unimaginably huge thermonuclear reactor we call the sun might have more to do with the temperature of the Earth than your SUV. Don't look up. Not important. Just keep worshiping the Weather Channel Gods.

Yep, no doubt that global climate changes occur naturally - who's disputing that? Around 1000AD, there were effing dairy farms on Greenland - dairy farms! A mini-ice age occurred around 1400 which forced the Scandinavian settlers to abandon them. It happened very quickly and this mini-ice age was well documented in Europe. As it is still far too cold today to have dairy farms on Greenland - I'm not exactly crapping my pants.

There were and will continue to be ice ages and global warming despite what we humans do. It's cyclical. No scientist has been able to establish that all of our emissions alone, taken in the most radical light, could contribute any more than +.25 of a degree.

It's happening, but I seriously doubt it's us.

thats the problem. these discussions, the rhetoric and the arguments are almost never kept within the proper context of the fact that climate change occurs naturally and the actual discussion is what part of the current climate change is natural, what part is the result of mankinds contribution.

there is this intimidating term used to describe the issue called "global warming" which within the context of the discussion implies that the climate should remain constant or that no warming should be occuring naturally.

the simple fact is that there is no widespread agreement on whats happening, why, what degree of change is natural, what isn't etc.... BUT at the end of the day, you only get continued research funding, grants and attention for scaring people. scientific research is just as biased as anyone in their political views and that bias often occurs out of financial necessity.

Its all my fault sorry. Now our planet is going to overheat and we are going to go into an ice age, or have tsunamis or, hurricanes or penguins and polar bears are going to die...

I'm throwing in there that this is all evolution. Happened before, and will happen again. Scientists just like to throw shit together to make themselves feel like they're actually doing something useful, but really, no one knows whats going on. All that can be said is our time is about up. Time for another Ice Age and some stronger species to develop.

I feel like I'm in a great time of history. I don't have to worry about the future at all. Either we go to war and kill ourselves; the world freezes over; or we find the cure to all problems through mechanics. Whichever comes, I know I don't have to do shit.

No worries Ive got 5000 cans of aquanet hairspray I stored up. Im going to start spraying them into the air today. Someone keep track of the ozone layer and see if they notice a change......

Ive also got a bunch of non dolphin friendly tuna nets Im on my way to throw in the ocean along with a bunch of those plastic things that hold 6 packs together. After im done with that Im on my way to cut down a bunch of trees and going to do that with a diesel guzzling backhoe. If anyone has ever cut down a redwood before can you give me advice on this? My only concern is mostly about the iceage they kept telling us about back then. I hate the cold....

Do you really think man doesn't impact the environment?

Seriously?

Yah, you look like a scrawny little prick that would fall over in a strong wind, I'd hate the cold if I were you too.

I mean, I really have no idea if man's causing current climate change... But whenever man's impact on the environment comes up it reminds me of being a kid realizing I'd never see certain things due to man's impact: an awesome tide pool area off Half Moon Bay turned sewage, wetlands turned concrete, water I'd never swim in again -- shit like that.

Dunno. Maybe I ate too many shrooms and hugged a few too many trees or something. *shrug* I'm off my rocker enough to think a magic bullet would involve population control, but then again, it could be a flashback making me think that.

only a simpleton would suggest that anyone is arguing that we have no effect at all.

and that IS the question... "WHAT is the effect" - this debate exists because there is no agreement to that simple question on any level at all. all you hear is psuedo science, scare tactics and mindless referrences to ice ages and climatic cycles. thats the problem. We can't predict rain this saturday with 100% certainty... much less what will happen over a period of 100 or 1000 years. of course we should be concerned. but that concern should be substantiated with solid science... not fear mongering, scare tactics and propaganda... thats why the issue starts to lose its audience.

i don't recall seeing anyone ever argue that man has zero impact on climate.

Personally, I don't want to believe in Global Warming. I've got enough shit to worry about as it is, but I'm not easily convinced of anything, and I can't find anyone reliable to dispel the theory. If I search for skeptics I run across a short list of names, the vast majority of whom are tied directly to energy companies or to think tanks subsidized by energy companies.

If I try to convince friends of this, like the other day, I say, "Hey Mel, check it out! Robert C. Balling at ASU insists mankind has little impact on global warming."

Cocksure Mel, he says, "Shit, Duke you stupid prick. Balling he been on the Exxon tip for years. They gave him $400,000. You pay me $400,000, I'll do anything you say. I will even call you smart and handsome."

"Easy Mel," I say. "Easy now. Sallie Baliunas tells me the same thing. This chick's a Harvard professor, too. So roll that up, Mel. Roll that up in your GED and smoke it."

"Well, golly gee, Duke," Melly Mel retorts. "Sallie's worse than that Balling when it comes to bobbing on the big oil knob. The girl get around. She a member of at least nine organizations which receive financial support from the petroleum industry, including the American Petroleum Institute?and they don?t just make Vaseline."

At this point, Mel starts insulting me, calling me gullible and a chucklehead.

He tells me that Rupert Murdoch and even Pat Robertson now believe that Global Warming is a threat. Worse still, that ExxonMobil, just this month, did a 180 and now says, "We know enough now ? or, society knows enough now ? that the risk is serious and action should be taken."

I?m fit to be tied, so I do what I normally do in these situations: I shut down and start yelling out lines from Scarface. ?Goodbye Mel!? I shout. ?Maybe you can find yourself a first-class ticket to the resurrection!"

Somebody, help me, please, gimme a little sugar to shut my smug friend up.

The intelligence it takes to call someone out for something then do exactly that is mind boggling.

It's no wonder that you have no argument or skills in debate, just stupid semi-humorous quips.

The fact that I use a Mac, drink coffee, and live in one of the most technologically advanced & forward thinking cities is not much of a put down, try harder.

Every truth passes through three stages before it is recognized.
First it is ridiculed.
Second it is violently opposed.
Third it is regarded as self-evident.

It's really scary to see either people who don't care or simply just don't want to see what is going on. It's easy to see that we are exploiting the earth at a speed that it can simply not substain and that everything happening is cause by human. The earth is limited in resource and we are using more than what it can provide us.

We are all connected in this biodiversity. Each species interact with each other. If you do some research you'll see that right now we are in the 6th massive instinction of earth history. There's less than 10% of the big fish in the ocean, more than 25% of the mamal are facing extinction and more species are disappearing from the face of the earth everyday. Just go see some Coral reef to see how bad they are. The earth condition is not getting better everyday... it's just getting worst.

I'm not worried about life. Life will survive on earth what ever happen. It's just really sad that the humankind that is at the same time incredibly intelligent and capable of such nice thing is at the same time so stupid.
