The NFL has become a JOKE
I used to love this sport.
Now with all the flags it's become unwatchable. You can't go three straight plays with some bullshit call (90% of the time on the defense). I thought it had gotten bad over the last couple of years, but this season it's so annoying that I can hardly enjoy watching a game and I'm seriously considering saying fuck it. This from someone who has been watching 17 weeks + playoffs of professional football for the last 20 + years. What the fuck are the people in charge thinking? Is anyone equally pissed? |

This season I've really had to separate the NFL from the game. Like f1. The governing body is destroying the sport. I think the new rule will settle in though over the next couple weeks. But that still leaves Goodall, who is a problem to the sport. So yeah I'm pissed at the NFL too.

Think about it like this, if you owned (or were in charge of) a company that was constantly being sued by former employees, what would you do? You'd change policies to prevent it from happening. It's pretty terrible indeed but if you're going to blame anyone then blame those who made millions for playing a game, knew the risks but jump on the lawsuit bandwagon because they're broke a year or 2 after they retire since they have no education and zero money management skills. |

Anyway it's not all about injuries but bullshit defensive holding and pass interference calls... the game sucks now. The refs are determining the outcomes with bad calls.

I get pissed when its flag after flag after flag. I don't think it's every game but its annoying and it does kill the flow of the game. The officiating is nowhere near as bad as when they had the replacement refs and they were just missing every call. On a side note I think the NFL should be asking guys to tackle with their heads up and should totally ban tackling head first, not just helmet to helmet. I think the injuries are killing the game and I see so many unnecessary hits that wouldn't even affect the outcome of the game. Ike Taylor's injury last night was a perfect example. The WR he was covering caught the ball, he had the guy wrapped up and wasnt going anywhere. A second Steelers defender comes in head first and smashes both of them, destroying Ike's forearm in the wake. You know you have a problem when players are getting injured by their own players on hard hits, and I'm not talking about some offensive lineman rolling up on a guys leg or ankle. You can't penalize it, but you can certainly run a program asking the players to not go head first (this way they can actually see who the fuck they are hitting), and as well as being smarter on secondary hits. I also think a ton of guys are catching concussions hitting head first with their eyes to the ground. Keep your fucking head up, its really that simple. I like hard hit, but I hate watching good players get injured more. You can also lay a hard hit and keep your head up. Here's a video... these secondary hits do not need to happen, it doesn't make your enjoyment go up, and it usually leaves someone hurt since they are a blind target: I guess the flipside here is he is trying to cause a fumble? I dunno - the injuries suck. Dude just caused his own player, whose a 12 year player and pro-bowler to miss the end of the season on that hit. |

It's funny - I hadn't noticed it until the Monday night Jets - Bears game where the Jets got jobbed on 14 points by refs calls (BS pass interference) and a fumble recovery brought in for a TD that was whistled dead then overturned). Not saying the refs gave Chicago the game, but, well yes - I'm saying the refs gave Chicago the game.
I've been watching all the games on NFL Pass while I'm on the treadmill - I watch the 35 minute condensed versions, so you don't see all the penalties and the game goes nonstop. Watching like that - it's very watchable. |

The other way to make the game more bearable, assuming you don't have NFL Pass, is to go the DVR route. Set it to record the games you want to watch, then start watching them 45 minutes into the game and fastfwd through all the annoying flag delays and commentator yapping etc. You can watch a 3 hour game in 90 minutes and still see every play. Without my beloved DVR there's no way I'd be able to watch six full games every week like I do.

It's size and speed killing the NFL, just like most other sports.
When players were 150-250 pounds and ran a 5-6 second 40 yard dash the collisions were nowhere near as violent as they are today one every play. Human knees and ankles aren't intended to support 325 pounds of muscle while another guy weighing 310 and running a 4.4 40 yard dash crashes into you. As players continue to get bigger, stronger and faster the league needs to artificially reduce impact or they won't be able to play a full season of games. Less impact at practice, less impact in preseason, rules to curtail impact in games, bigger rosters to spread the impact around more, etc... The same way the NBA was a better game when most players couldn't dunk a ball, the NFL will also use rules to make the game harder. Moving back extra points and requiring kicker balls to make field goals less automatic. Eliminating kickoff run backs and all the rest. The only other solution is seriously changing the gear they wear or putting in things like weight limits on players. That's the racing approach where restricting top speeds is now universal. More likely we are headed for a game of glorified two hand touch within 25 years when players are 400 pounds and run 4.1. |
