My Paypal Account Was Hacked Into!!

I am working on my sites when I get an email saying that I just sent money???

I logged in right away and saw 3 transactions for $1000GBP and 2 for $500 GBP. So I started to freak when suddenly my account access was limited due to "suspicious transactions". Paypal had noticed and had frozen it (in a way).

So I called my cc company and told them. They will be investigating and have changed my cc number in the meantime. I called my bank and told them the same. They don't see the pending charges yet but they will take note and let me file a fraud complaint when it does come through. All those fraudulent transactions are now in the resolution center in paypal and the guy on the phone told me that they will "investigate" and I should have the funds back within 10 business days.

The hacker went under this name:
Mar. 7, 2007 Payment To Anatoli Pogudin Completed ... -£500.00 GBP

Now for the good part:

I just got an email from the hacker himself:

"Hello... I am Sc3ar1. I hack u PayPal. And other Informatsion.If u don't give me 1 000 $ i Selling u informatsion (Bank accounts, credit card numbers)
(C)Sc3ar1
(xD.pro Hackers team)"

The bastard!! His email was [email protected] ... maybe he was from russia or maybe it was his spam email.

I obviously won't respond to him but what's killing me is how he got in in the first place?

- I don't answer phishing emails and always open a new browser to access my account.
- I don't use my paypal password for anything else nor do I keep it on my computer.

How the hell did he get in??

Could he have gotten my cc info and bank info even though, when you login to your paypal account, the info is encrypted. Ex: Visa # xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-5555

mopek1
**Funny, he didn't change any of my person info, add an email, etc...

I didn't download any new software or use any file sharing programs etc...

I may have fallen for a pop-up that asked to install adobe or firefox updates. I wasn't aware that keylogging existed over the net. I always thought one had to physically be there.

So if this guy has a trojan on my computer then he probably has passwords for everything (bank, sponsors)? How do I protect against that now? My antivirus found nothing and Spybot found the usual - advertising.com, sextracker, which even when you fix them they re-appear.

I can go out and buy zone alarm and I will buy that paypal security key (thanks for the suggestion) .

Gotcha. They?ve been selling the shit out of these, when I ordered mine when they first started selling them (or giving them away with business accounts) it took 15 minutes for the page to load.

None of the emails from him were phishing emails. The first email saying "I sent funds" may have been but I consciously opened a new browser and logged into paypal that way. And when I did, I did see that the hacker had sent funds.

The second one had no link in it.

I downloaded "blackLight"
http://www.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml which is a program I believe that detects rootkit and hidden processes. It found nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Well, after a few weeks of phone calls and stress, The money was finally refunded to my account.

Paypal did well to flag the transactions as fraudulent and quickly freeze my account.

They also acted quickly (within) a week to reverse the transactions.

They did piss me off by leaving some of the money in my account frozen instead of refunding it straight back to my cc. Also I was down about $500 in currency conversion losses which I had to figure out, phone them and then wait 4 days for them to credit it to my account.

But aside from that I am happy overall.
