how on earth is "events management" a subject you can take at university and spend 2-3 years on it????????

surely its just common sense and having a cool head.

I think that if you need to take three years of University to plan events you may have a huge problem. I don't doubt for one minute that it can be hectic sometimes with getting everything to come off without a hitch. BUT THREE YEARS

ya... that does sound a bit whack.

I mean, I can understand that there's some business classes involved... perhaps some symbolic logic (to emphasize on that 'common sense' thing you mentioned)... maybe even some botany (so you know how to increase the survivability of floral arrangements )...

So sure... you could do it... but that certainly sounds like something you could easily jump into without having to pay for schooling in.

But you can get a degree in just about anything these days.

A "degree" in the field might mean you can jack up your price a bit, though...

Definitely not me, come on man I haven't been giving you a hard time lately. I figured he was Dark Jedi as he seemed to start posting as soon as DJ stopped. You're probably right though, sure seems to post like lazonby. As far as the thread goes, you wouldn't believe all the different types of degrees offered. There's some that are a lot harder to believe than "events mgt".

it really depends on what the definition of an event is. There is a need for professional event planners. In the case of for example public speakers, someone who cordinates the entire speaking tour, across multiple locations, deals with the cultural and local legal requirements. These type of event planners would work for agencies like IMG and manage the logistics for all the events for dozens if not hundreds of professional speakers. They are not your standard party planner.

scottybuzz, you must've misunderstood, EVENT MANAGEMENT is normally a course that business students take. There's also an advanced course and I'm sure you can do a thesis on it, but I seriously doubt it that there's any sane university out there teaching event management for three years...

There's a lot events that need pro planning done. Presentation, budget etc it's all important and I bet for big events not just anyone could do it. It seems simple because we basically dont know shit about it.

Just like most ppl think being a webmaster is an easy job.

Try organising a wedding with a couple hundread invites, with a hundread comming out of town...

When you go to an event you never realise how much work there is behind it.

Dude you're a fucking retard... you don't know what you're talking about right there. You're talking about a billion dollar industry there. This is a big chunk of the entraintement business.

I've been part in organisation in 3000+ people events (raves and shows, on private proprety or rented arenas), and trust me this isn't no peice of cake. And this is nothing compared to what a big show like the rolling stones comming in town is.

Try filling a local bar and see how hard that is...

You gotta be involved with the local politicians, police, firefighters, hospitals, insurances, security and staff, insurance, secure a nice spot for the event etc etc... and that's just before you start organising your event.

you need to know the state and local laws for everything, you need to know finance administration and be able to read and write a good budjet.

Then you need to get the materials, but how do you know exactly what you need ? That can be a big different in the cost and the efficiency of the event.

How do you make the place secure and profitable at the same time ? And you have to make people confortable too...

After that you need to promote the event. Print, press, associations with other events and stuff.

Once again you're talking out of your ass on a subject you know nothing about. I'm glad you started making adult sites but if you're so smart, why aren't you making enourmous sums of money ? Hell event planning should be easy.

You are right, you normally get a course when you take business OR marketing.

But there are many places where they have extensive event management courses wich are fulltime...

Every sport event, show, casino or public venue that's big needs a good event manager, or many.

well ok having read this through, i may have been a bit out of line and the day and age we live in now where people expect so much and if the tinyiest thing goes wrong they go whining off, then maybe it needs to be done so well.

for example this quote
Quote:
it really depends on what the definition of an event is.
But how many big big events are there? when so many are taking the subject up and down the country?

therefor it cant just be the big events like the music festivals in reading, but the small ones, which really do not need someone with a degree.

apologies too all i upset with my ignorance.

that you cannot comprehend the effect of say, a week long convention has on a local economy, the millions of dollars that will bring in and the complexity of such an enterprise, really explains a lot.

there are events to manage larger than the keg party you have to your at your factory every christmas, you know.

I agree with LiveDose, for example my friend works as an organizer of events. This includes various events strating from weddings (where up to 1000 people could be present), concerts, shows, conferences and etc. She has a whole team of stuff who are responsible for setting up the lights, arrangement and security, write programs and bla bla bla. I can assure you that definitely need skills to do that!

Event planning is big money, but I will also agree that colleges are all about trying to make a buck and will offer degrees in anything that they think they can sell to stupid ass students.

I always like how they are changing graduation requirements so if you aren't smart and keep track of them, you wind up having to take an extra year of classes to graduate.

Why is 3 years at Uni funny for this subject? Just because you think you could do it doesn't me you can. Imagine having to plan and host a whole big event. Manage anything between 20 people and 200 people. Know what everyone of them is doing at every point of the day and being able to adapt when shit hits the fan!

It's not that easy dude, I bet you couldn't even organize a small keg party for your friends, let alone a huge event involving 1000s of people... it's really a mix of business, PR, etc like someone said before...
