U.S. Honeybees Disappearing By The Millions...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070407...s_070407020928

Anyone following this story? If I recall, honeybees aren't native to the Americas they were brought over by the Europeans.

This present disasters is something to keep an eye on especially if you have money invested in futures and other agricultural products that require bee pollination.

This is nothing out of the ordinary -- it has happened before many times and it will happen again just as many, there is nothing to be concerned about. It, like many things, comes in cycles.

Like, oh, grain, or virtually anything that pollinates?

I remember seeing this last month. It's quite unsettling.

It's not really that unsettling other than just thinking about what would happen if all bees were to disappear off the face of the Earth tomorrow. What is happening now isn?t anything new and has virtually been going on forever; the event is commonly referred to as a Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Mass CCDs come and go in cycles and nobody really knows exactly why. They are pretty sure that the varroa mite is a huge contributor to CCD's occurring but that is just one of many things they believe that affect the colonies at mass.

That or the people that use pesticides in their garden or on their flowers trying to prevent insect damage and have better looking things growing. To bad most of them also kill the very thing that pollentates them.

"The phenomenon now being witnessed across the United States has been dubbed ?colony collapse disorder,? or CCD, by scientists as they seek to explain what is causing the bees to literally disappear in droves.

The usual suspects to which bees are known to be vulnerable such as the varroa mite, an external parasite which attacks honey bees and which can wipe out a hive, appear not to be the main cause.

?CCD is associated with unique symptoms, not seen in normal collapses associated with varroa mites and honey bee viruses or in colony deaths due to winter kill,? entomologist Diana Cox-Foster told the Congress committee."

A similar event to this happened just over a decade ago. It's just cyclical and will continue to happen. Pesticides may make it worse as more people use them but that as a whole isn't the root responsibility for the collapses.

Oh I know, I am just saying it is a combination of factors. That and pesticides are bad and often not needed.

"It is normal for hives to see populations fall by some 20 percent during the winter, but the sharp loss of bees is causing concern, especially as domestic US bee colonies have been steadily decreasing since 1980."

Very true LOL... man I see people here pouring out pesticides during the summer time like there is no tomorrow. They will seriously start spraying it out like it's water, using a whole fucking drum on their little yard. It's insane!

Whatever the cause it's worth keeping an eye on.

Yes mass colony wipe outs have happened and do, due to known causes. In this case the cause hasn't totally been nailed down. We can only speculate but let's hope it gets solved and things go back to normal.
