Jesus, I do that in Maui all the time. You can get it almost anywhere in Kahului. I didn't know it was illegal.

Well if they don't secure the connection with a password and put a big sign outside that using the WiFi without ordering shit is illegal, IMO they're just asking for it.

It shouldn't be ileagal, if cafe's got da connection opened to the Public its up for grabs...

what if I lived above the cafe and picked up the signal they have opened to share Then what? , I couldn't use it?...

Thats BS... If They don't want anyone to use it then they can make it private and give their patrons the password when patrons walk thru the door... (i.e. via text on the menu or sumthin)

well it both is and isnt as simple as that

I was always under the assumption that if you have an OPEN wireless network you were basically "granting" authorization to use the service.

but i suppose that isn't very logical , as just because i leave my house door unlocked doesnt mean i am "granting" authorization to come use my stuff.

Take your laptop tp Maui. Open it up on any street in Kahului and you get internet. That's theivery?? Who the fuck am I supposed to pay? Just send a check into the city of Kahului? It's not a secure service. I mean you don't need an acces spas or anything. It just works.

Upcountry I have a desktop and an actual paid connection but if we're out and about you can just get it. I mean it's an XP so it's always just connected to the wifi in town.

And naw man, seriously I had no idea you had to pay for it.

How do you pay for it though? Like if Starbucks has an open connection and 8 other stores in the area do as well, who do you pay?

I agree. Same thing as leaving a shop open and unattended and being shocked that people are going in and robbing it blind. Same goes for your personal wifi, secure your shit dumbass, it ain't rocket science.

not knowing who not to pay doesn't mean that taking something for free isn't theft.

you are aware that you are getting it for free.. you are aware that others are paying for it. you are aware that you should be paying for it. you are aware that no one is intending for you to use it for free.

Keep old empty cups ( Starbucks, 2nd cup, etc..) and put on dash while using wifi.

But If It's a Hot Spot and the connection is being shared openly with the public then their giving it away...

In an effort to attract clientel (hello) marketing gimmick, and it works...

just like when U see store employees giving away physcal goods in front of the biz in an effort to get people to come inside and buy /spend money...

They don't give that stuff away and then call the cops and have you arrested cause you decided not to go in, and walk away instead

So for every one using it outside theres one inside buying sumthin..

thats the price / consequence the biz pays / takes...

Otherwise why make it public just supply the paying customers with the password

I guess you also leave your car open and running while you do grocery shopping and are SHOCKED and APPALLED when you find somebody with no ethics whatsoever stole it.

It's called common sense, you should try getting some. It's awesome.

If you think it would be okay to take that car you have messed up ethics. Personally, I don't even leave my front door unlocked when I am actually in it but if I leave it unlocked there is no excuse for anybody to walk inside of it without my permission.

Anyone here ever find money on the ground? Quarter? Dollar? 5 bucks?

Was it YOUR money? Did you turn it into the authorities? Did you try to find the rightful owner? You know it wasn't your money. Let me guess, you played 'finder keepers' with it right?

This is more like a store owner standing in front of his store and giving away free sample in an effort to attract customers...

Some peeps will go in and some won't...

is it right for the store owner to call the cops and have those that accepted the free sample and walked away arrested cause they didn't come in and spend money...

C'mon, Thats just stupid

Exactly right. By law in most states, you have to take the money to the police, they will impound it. If no one claims it in 90 days, then the copy of the impound sheet, says that you own it.

IF the money if a hight enough value, then the PD may try to take it through the courts.

Other wise, if you keep it, you are guilty if theft.

Yeah, and if everybody was nice and caring and gave each other hugs we could all sit under a waterfall and sing songs and watch the birds and prance around with flowers in our hair.

But back in the real world you lock your doors, don't let people see your ATM pin number, use firewalls and secure your wifi because, NEWSFLASH, not everybody is nice and ethical and says thank you.

That is the point you so obviously are trying so hard to ignore.

dude... try to grasp a little reality here. 1) you don't own the service... 2) they do. that means that 3) you don't determine the terms of use and 4) just because its there, don't you think that the intent of free access is for PAYING CUSTOMERS? isn't that obvious?

Because not everybody follows the rules it is reasonable to take steps to protect yourself. This stunning feat of logic is sometimes called "common sense".

Is being obtuse something you do professionally or are you simply gifted?

.
heh , there actually is aprocess for this..

I found about 2 thousand dollars when i was a kid and my parents made me turn it in to the cops , and they make advertisements in the paper asking people to identify the cash , and strangely enough nobody came forward and i got the cash back .

but of course we have all found like a $20 or $50 bill before and not said anything. , not sure what the crime would be if you could prove it ..

Like if lets say there was a stickeron the bill or something, would someone get charged for not turning in a $20 bill he found, and what would the charge be ?

how are you supposed to know not to get into someones car and drive off in if no one tells you not to.

are you fucking retarded? maybe ask the owners? maybe seek clarification before stealing? if you know its not yours.. you know someone is paying for it... any person with an IQ over 10 probably realizes (and certainly the law expects you to) that it probably wasn't intended for you to use for free.

.... OOOOOH..

oops. sorry... forgot i was talking to the same fucking morons that claimed they were "forced" to steal from affiliates.

my bad.

That's the cafe's fault in my opinion, they should have a password to access it. When you pay, they then give you the password or something like that.

From the article it didn't look like the cafe really cared much. This is just a anal cop with nothing better to do. Cafe probably ran out of donuts.

I don't think it's being ignored.

Security is just common sense, because there are people out there with loose enough ethics to try and take stuff that doesn't belong to them - that's a fact of life.

But any lack of security still doesn't excuse the fact that they do.

I think the point that a lot of people here seem to be missing, is just because it may be easy to take something that doesn't belong to you, that doesn't all-of-a-sudden mean that you have the right to.

C'mon, Thats just stupid
That's not comparable...places like Starbucks aren't giving it away for free, I know the Starbucks where I live you have to go inside and pay to use their wifi

I run a store in my neighborhood and do the same thing and i sure as hell would not stand outside and give away free samples to get customers and then have those who decided not to come in arrested....

I concur, and I personally would not take something which does not belong to me or has been clearly offered.

But I am also not blind to the fact that, holee shit mah who would've thunked it, not everybody thinks the same way, and take steps to ensure my shit is secure.

Ah but in my area I know quite a few starbucks managers and they are giving it away for free (shared connections) accept for one who wants people to pay for it and he keeps his connection secure ad provides patrons with passwords

Standing on the corner of a street and you pick up a WiFi signal. I'll ask again how do you find the owner?
