Are the Big TGP Boys Overrated?

Many in the industry seem to admire them. I mean people like thehun, shemp, tommysbookmarks, etc. But I just started thinking in this direction... are they really making that much money? They surely have the traffic numbers, the egos and the admiration of 2-sales-a-day affiliates but what about $$$ ?

I just had #1 link at one of top 10 tgps in the world. I made a grand total of 1 sale. So this got me thinking.. So maybe these guys are making $5k per month, maybe $10K, maybe $15-20K... but more than that? Really doubt it. TGPs seem to be big bandwidth wasting machines.. and the actual $ return from them does not seem to be that high at all.

What do you think?

they sell the links, even if you had 1 sale, you still paid like $300 for that link

and you aren't the only one buying these spots

Although the Shemp is a pioneer in this industry, I do not think I would even put him remotely close to the same level as the hun, worldsex, sleazy, tommy's, etc.

I have very high respect for Shemp, so I hope people do not take this the wrong way. I just don't think he has near the traffic numbers of some of those guys anymore. And on top of that he skims which will always lower productivity no matter how you look at it.

Im not a TGP guy or a gallery guy....
But....1 sale ?
Try promoting a different niche , i always at least get 4 for 5 from the The Hun , even when it is a shitty gallery and i dont waste much time with trying to sell it with good text or decnt images or vids.

What niche were you trying to promote - how much was the sites membership ?

OK, suppose that my gallery was below average. But even then.. 1 sale? From #1 link on one of the top 10 tgps? That just gives you an indication of how many sales these "big-time" tgps are doing. SALES - NOT TRAFFIC!

Sounds like you need re-tool what you are selling... We recently had 3 listings on the Hun netted a total of 72sales on a new site we were testing...

...a point of clarification....i only skim a little on the archives, its my payback for still having free submit accounts...there is no skim on the main TGP page...

Let's do the maths for Hun:

I'm not 100% sure of the right prices but the final result is not so far from the reality...

1st spot= $650 * 30 = 19,500
1 banner=$250 * 30 = 7,500
Spot 2 to 5, 10 links= 3,000*3 (30 days)= 9,000
Spot 6 to 15, 10 links=2,000*3= 6,000
Spot 16 to 20, 10 links=1,500*3=4,500

I don't know about the Overflow, so you may add some more bucks, and I don"t know if he has his own gals posted...

So, at least, it makes $46,500 per month...

At least... I'm sure he makes a lot more...

Reread what I said please. I would never rip on someone that has been around or as long as you. Quality doesn't mean volume. You have quality, just not massive volume. The hun has volume. With volume comes suckers. Understand what I mean? ...clarification, congrats on the P/U - you deserve it more than anyone does.

How have you been feeling healthwise btw?

Well for starters.. hun is much bigger than than the others in the top 10. So he's not an indication but rather an exception. Hun does 100M uniques / month. OK?

Shemp has great traffic and you can't tell shit from one listing on any tgp or any traffic source. A true test of how well your gallery does is over time. I could stop working right now and a lot of my bills would be paid for a long time from the rebills I get from shemps traffic.

Just because you couldn't sell to that site's traffic doesn't mean it isn't worth infinitely more than what you made from it.

Also don't confuse the "big" new thumb tgp's who say they have X-million hits a day with the old school sites like The Hun, Worldsex, AL4A, etc etc.
You're talking about two totally different types of traffic there.
English speaking bookmark traffic is pure gold.

eurabia,
Here are some of the factors that could have affected your results:

1) which site were you were listed on
2) what sponsor/site were you promoting
3) was anyone else promoting the same sponsor
4) was there a banner for the same site above you
5) how new was the content
6) was the same content/set listed in the past week
7) how stimulating was the template
8) was your call-to-action clear/catchy

I can tell you there are people that spent thousands and made nothing - and there are others that have it down pat like a science.

Test, track, tweak, perfect - try again
