A restaurant without a waitress is a Jack-In-the Box. Any restaurant with waiters/waitresses has that cost built into their prices already. Delivery is an added feature that most restaurants don't offer, so it is an additional expense for your convenience. If the driver is used or not, he has to be paid for.

As far as tipping a waitress when an additional waitress charge has been added to a bill, many restaurants add 15% for groups of 6 or more. I am not opposed to adding more to that 15% and usually do.

i agree with mutt throughout this whole thing, also you shouldn't have to tip to insure quality services, if you have to do that, then you better find a better place to eat, you should get quality services whether you tip or not

I'm with you on this.
Same thing with room service, if they add a gratuity to the bill then I'm not tipping the guy who brings it to my room.

With cab drivers, they deserve a tip if they help me with luggage, otherwise the fare gets rounded up to the next dollar and that's it.

I'm amazed by the sense of entitlement people in the service industry have though. I took a cab from the Venetian to the Monte Carlo once in Vegas, driver never said a word the entire ride.
We get there and I pay the fare (but no tip) and as I'm walking away he screams to all the people and bellmen outside "THAT GUY DIDN'T TIP ME!!"

I was like WTF??

Of course you tip the driver. If you're too poor to tip then you shouldn't of ordered delivery and just picked it up yourself.

Frankly, having been on both sides of the rope, I think tipping's about class.

Some people got it. Some people don't.

Whatever your belief structure on the thing, it's considered appropriate to tip delivery folks (despite any 'delivery charge' that may be there to supplement the driver with the cost of gas and maintenance on his car) 10% of your order.

If your order was confusing as hell, required the stocking of a bunch of sides, or the guy picks up a pack of smokes or cans of soda that the restaurant didn't have for you, too, hook the guy up a bit more.

if you don't, that's your prerogative, of course - but you're exhibiting a lack of class, I think.

If you don't have the money to tip, you shouldn't be looking to others to provide you with a service to begin with, imho... you should be putting yourself in an environment where you do whatever yourself - whether it be pouring you a drink, parking your car, handling your bags, giving your order to a kitchen, driving your ass around, or making a trip to the local pizza joint's cash register.

Otherwise, for me, it's as simple as you lack class.

I find the remarks like "if you can't afford to tip" hilarious.

When you make that remark you're basically saying "I'm not rich"

You're thinking in terms of whether or not you can afford something, whereas others are thinking in terms of whether or not they "should" do something.

You don't become wealthy by throwing money around trying to look wealthy. You become wealthy by making every decision about every dollar wisely. Wealthy people by and large are very frugal, and they make every dollar count.

I drove pizza's back in the day. I slung some coffee as well. Both jobs in the same San Mateo / 3rd avenue west neighborhood while in highschool.

From your post, I can imagine how you'd order a pizza or some type of coffee drink. And don't even bother to reply to my post, because you know it's how you are -- you probably got it from your parents or some shit like that:

You ordering pizza: I'd like a small pizza. Half pepperoni on light cheese, couple flakes of mushroom, cooked lightly. Other half, strong sauce, extra cheese, anchovies and drizzled with pesto. Cooked crispy. Please make sure the driver doesn't let the extra cheese slide on to the light cheese side.
-- Your tip: $.50

You ordering coffee: -- Well, we've all seen those half-caf, half-whip pansie commercials... enough said on that...
-- Your tip: $.00

And before you ignore my implore to not quote this thread, this line says it all about you: "Wealthy people by and large are very frugal, and they make every dollar count." - You, apparently, are one of "those wealthy" people who think you're the only one who deserves something.

Then again, I could be wrong about everything I've read from your posts.

On another note, are you Jewish?

I always tip $5 plus the change.. EVERYTIME.. I order 1-2 pizzas a week from different places just cause i don't like going out just to get food.

I tend to think if you are going to do anything where your next service is determined on how you treat the person giving you a service whether it's a pizza driver, cab driver, waitress, or bartender.. If you treat them with respect and give them a decent tip they will remember that the next time

I live way outside of Phoenix but when I call for a cab to go to the bar i get someone showing up in 10 min rather then 40+ min like when I first moved here.. Why? cause the drivers remember me and want me to be in their cab

I tip for good service. But I am not embarrassed to leave no tip at all when the service sucks.

One pizza guy who forgot my drink AND handed me the pizza at a 45 degree angle (results inside just what you'd guess, a fucking pile of goo) said "Boy, I love delivering pizzas for free" when I started to shut the door after getting my change. I reminded him that tips are for acceptable service, and larger tips for good service, and then I actually asked him why he thought he was entitled to a tip. His answer was because it cost him money to drive out to my house. Wrong answer. Thats his job and its included in the price of the pizza (and the delivery charge that Pizza Hut so kindly adds on now) but his service sucked, his attitude sucked even worse and thats why he had no tip. Then I shut the door.

I usually tip the pizza guy a couple bucks anyway but if the service is extremely slow or he forgets things or hands the pizza in a manner its slid the toppings off I will not. And if there is a delivery charge already added I do usually give a lower tip depending on the charge.

Fuck you asshole, my mother was a waitress at fucking Denny's. What I learned from her experience was that if you spend all your money trying to look like you have money, you'll always be broke.

Gee aren't you the smart one "I'm gonna insult the fuck out of this guy and then tell him he's not allowed to reply"

I totally fucked up when I started this thread and forgot that most of the people on GFY deliver pizza or work in coffee shops to supplement the money they make being a sig whore, while living in their mother's basement.

It now makes sense why so many of you think I'm a bad guy because I don't think I should throw money around at random people on the street like I'm John Gotti.

i tip around $2 to $3... back in the day when I puffed all the time if the guy looked like a smoker I might also ask if he wanted a little extra green for later as well.

eh....i don't think you are a bad person, and my comments weren't directed at you specifically, but in regard to tipping in general.

I will argue that I'm hardly John Gotti for tipping the pizza guy a couple bucks.

I did work as a pizza guy once though, and grew up poor as hell, which is probably why I appreciate people who work hard/hustle for their money. I don't live in my parents basement, haven't since I was 16, and paid my dad's rent for him this month.

Oh, and I dont even have a sig.

First of all just about every damn chain pizza is beyond crap and if your even slightly squimish about what goes into hotdogs or whatnot skip them.

Delivery fee's to me now kill the tip, not to mention most of the drivers are morons. When we order from one chain i get some medium pizza or some hot wings, and my wife gets breadsticks. I stress over and over again marinara or red sauce for the bread sticks. EVERY fucking time, every driver always brings ranch dressing instead. He or she then has to go back and get the correct sauce fucking up dinner and well they also have a 3.00 delivery fee.

Now typically we will get pizza from a non chain place that also costs much more due to that they use real ingrediants and can not negotiate cheese purchases to get a discount since it is a commodity. However they do pizza correctly and at least get customer service as well as not serving you something that costs under 2.00 per unit for an xtra large.

PS when a pizza place screws up my own revenge for them is to order 5 large cheese pizza's with double cheese (counts as 2 sides). A cheese only pizza uses more cheese than a pizza with toppings and the more toppings the less cheese used. However cheese is the most expensive ingrediant on the pizza. They are highly lucky to not loose money on that purchase, even at chain places.

PPS as for arriving hot, thats BS. Nearly every chain and pizza shop all have in car hot boxes. The way to tell in speed is the cripsness of the crust. Yet again most are more concerned with the toppings and numbers of them than the most important part and taste of a good pizza, the crust.

sometimes i do get the taste for franchise pizzas - Pizza Hut, Dominos and Little Caesars - they all have unique tastes, same way KFC, McDonalds, and any franchise does. But usually I do order pizza from real mom and pop Italian restaurants with quality ingredients - does cost more. I ordered one tonight and it was 20 bucks - same pizza/toppings from Dominos would have been 13.99. heh - but when i was eating it and it was very good i kept thinking i should have ordered Pizza Hut and got two for the price of this one.

Jensen what reason could there be why a pizza would cost any more in Norway? Surely all the food supplies in Norway don't have to be imported - i know nothing about Norway, maybe they can't grown anything there.

Have to be careful with independent places. I have ordered pizzas from them that wind up in the trash after one bite because they are so nasty. On the other hand, all of the best pizzas I have ever eaten came from independent places.

I usually tip $5 for the delivery guy. To me, it's worth it, I don't care. Saves me the trouble and time of leaving the house.

Sometimes I really, really don't feel like tipping waiters though. They definitely do not always do their job. If I have to track down a waiter to get another drink or more chips, regardless of how busy they are that night, they are not doing their job. And no, I've never been a waiter, nor do I care how difficult it is. That's their job, do it right.

Pizzas that are delivered are more than $10 here. Delivery costs are higher than pickup.

Well, I don't know where you live. It costs an additional $1.50 to get a Papa John's delivered to my door. They don't care if you get a $10 pizza or a $20 pizza.

No need to tip if there's a delivery charge, I still would for good service.
