Does Fred Thompson really have a chance...

or is he more of a novelty candidate? I realize he was already a senator, but the whole actor thing might cause him to be taken less seriously

If I had to choose today what I think the Republican ticket will be, I woud say Giuliani-Thompson (Fred will help bring the South, and the boob-tube celebrity-infatuated masses).

Besides his 24-year younger wife isn't hard to look at (although definitely already a MILF):

Short answer no, long answer yes with a but:

Fred Thompson has a real problem. The public has a hard time seperating "Fred" from the character he played on Law and Order. In the L&O universe, he was very conservative and very direct. In real life, Fred's views aren't exactly the same as the character he played.

If the election was right now today, before the voting public gets a better chance to know this guy, then yes, he would have a chance. But over time, he will be shown to be a little too little for the conservative base, and the public will stop loving the TV character and start thinking about who this guy really is.

The only way he is the next POTUS is if they restart the West Wing series.

I don't think he is when you look at his background. Outside of his Senate run, he has been a career lobbyist with kids who are lobbyists as well.

I like Thompson....I'm still watching tho. He's definitely somebody to pay attention to. My mind changes a lot during these back and forth battles between the candidates.

I'm not swayed tho by the latest, greatest one who just happens to be in the (current crisis) right shoes at the time of voting....I do take the time to look at their past record and decide.

I think Thompson is definitely someone we all should watch.

Good God, this country needs it...may the best man win.

The real question you should be asking is how does Ron Paul differ from the other candidates. People looking for real Reagan/Goldwater style conservatism should really give him a look.

"He can't win...blablabla" That's what you'll hear. When you do, ask why Ron Paul is winning so many straw polls and raising more money than any other candidate. Not only that, ask why his OWN PARTY'S mouthpiece, Faux news, won't even give him equal face time?

Cause they know he's a true conservative and he's for the people by the people instead of for the government by the dollar.

What amuses me is Republicans are always complaining about Democrats being too ?Hollywood?. They bitch and bitch about it. Some of them even write books like Shut up and Sing, but yet here we go again with another Hollywood conservative. The problem is the sheep out there won?t separate it him from his characters on TV and in the movies. They will think he is tough, macho and commanding and vote for him. Plus with so many closet homos in the Republican Party it would be awfully tough for him to lose the nomination.

Thompson could be the dark horse of this election. I dont think I would call him the Second Coming of Reagan...but I do think the comparisons are interesting.....

1.) Both were actors (Reagan Films, Thompson TV & Films)
2.) Both were in politics (Reagan Governor, Thompson Senator)
3.) Both had recently joined Conservative Leaning Nationally Syndicated Radio Shows (Reagan, the General Electric Theater and Thompson, the Paul Harvey Show)
4.) Both acted as characters with high moral fiber and in leadership/judicial positions (Reagan Western Sheriff, Thompson District Attorney)
5.) Both were out of politics for a number of years before running for President
6.) Neither were "born and bred" to be politicians. They did it for the simple fact that they wanted to help lead the country into better times.
7.) Both have been known as "Great Communicators"

Can Thompson win? I don't know...but what I can tell you is that he will get voters that Republicans usually have a hard time getting. Women who love Arthur Branch on L&O, Senior Citizens who do not miss Paul Harvey, and young voters who have seen him in action packed movies playing leadership roles (i.e. President of NASCAR in Days of Thunder, Rear Admiral in Hunt for Red October or most recently as President Ulysses S Grant in the new HBO Drama "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee)

Can he win? I dont know, but I would not count him out too easily.

You don't have a fucking clue.

Thompson was the guy who took down Nixon. Do some homework on
his history with watergate and who was the first one to break the case wide open against Nixon !

In July of 1973, Fred Thompson, then a Republican attorney for the Senate Watergate committee, (and now a Republican senator from Tennessee), called on a surprise witness, Alexander Butterfield. Butterfield was a former aide to White House chief of staff H.R. Haldeman. The exchange:

Thompson: "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?"

Butterfield: "I was aware of listening devices, yes sir.

TV actors don't make good presidents. We need film actors for that. Fred Grandy only made it as far as Congress, and he sailed on The Love Boat!

It is you who needs to do your homework on Thompson and Nixon. In a private session Butterfield admitted that the Oval Office was taped. The question was not posed by Thompson but by another Republican. After finding out that tapes existed, Thompson leaked the information to the Nixon legal team in advance. There was then a public hearing 3 days later in which they all knew the question would need to be asked again. Howard Baker who was a Senator at the time insisted that Thompson be the one to ask it.

Don't let the hype fool you. Thompson was just given the chance to ask the question after it was asked 3 days earlier in a private session. He was a mole for the White House and Nixon in which many people felt he should have been fired.

Now lets look at his lobbying career that raked in over $1 million dollars. He lobbied hard for the deregulation of the Savings and Loan industry in the 80's which led to the huge crisis. He lobbied for an insurance company overseas to help fight legislation that would make them liable for a shitload of people getting cancer from asbestos. And not to mention his new staff is stock full of huge lobbyists. The guy is a K-Street dream. Oh, and lets not forget about his PAC that happened to pay his son hundreds of thousands of dollars for consulting a race he didn't even run in.

I know everyone running is a fucking crook and scumbag, but just pointing out that Thompson is one too.

As for whether Thompson has a chance, of course he does. I think it'll be tough for a Republican to win in this climate, but there are tons of IQ challenged dolts who will vote for any douchebag who wears Wranglers and talks about wars he was too pussy to fight in himself.

Does he have a chance? Sure. Will he win the nomination? Not likely. The main people that want him and the group that has done the most to recruit him is the far religious right. The far right doesn't like Giuliani because he is pro-choice and for gun control (among other things) they don't like McCain because he has openly bashed them in the past. They don't like Romney because he has made money from porn and is a Mormon. They have nobody that they can support who has a chance. Thompson is their guy. I doubt, however, that he will be able to get enough votes from the moderates in the party to get the nod.

You never know, anything could happen there is a long time still left, but really he is just another cookie cutter republican with a checkered political past. Like every candidate he has his flaws, it will be how he overcomes those that determines if he wins. I think it is more likely that he ends up as a vice presidential nominee for Giuliani.
