Overclocking Q6600 G0 - GoFuckYourself.com

How far have people pushed their Q6600? I'm a noob when it comes to overclocking, I know very little about fiddling with voltages and RAM timing, but I was able to push it from stock 2.4GHz to 3GHz (+25%) by changing the FSB to 342. I've gone a bit more conservative and wound that back to 2.64GHz (+10%, FSB 293). I haven't changed anything else, do I need to look at increasing voltages in order to keep things stable? I'd prefer stability over speed but I've read that the Q6600 overclocks well, so I thought I'd at least give it a gentle nudge

BTW this is not the stock cooler, I have installed a Zalman 9500

I have one of those also. I loved the price, but Overclocking was nowhere near as good as the qx line of CPUs.

I got my qx6700 up to 3.2ghz stable. You actually got more out of the q6600 than I did. I'd be happy with what you got.

Now, the new chips coming out nov 12(penryn, I believe) have been OC'd all the way up to 5ghz. the price will be about 1000 bucks on those. I have a 3D animation business, so I need all the horsepower I can get, and too much is never enough.

I'm surprised it was so easy to push it by +25% without making any major changes. I should add that I didn't really do much besides look at the idle temp, decided I was probably going too far without understanding the possible consequences, then rebooted and dropped back to +10%

I'm giving the CPU a workout @2.64GHz right now and core 0 is averaging about 54C.

I upgraded from a Pentium D 3.0 GHz so the first thing I had to get over was that a drop in processor clock didn't matter.

It's converting Canon RAW images at about 2.5 times the rate that my Pentium D did.

OMG, I would never run a cpu that hot. I get worried when I go over 38 at full load(rendering 3d frames). I use a Monsoon TEC cooler, and it's an overclocker's best friend.

54C isn't that bad and 38C sure as hell isn't anything to worry about.

How are you looking at temps? From what I understand there's a CPU package sensor, and then sensors for individual cores. We could be comparing different sensors here

For example, right now core 0 is 43C but the overall CPU temp (which I presume is the package) is being reported as 33C.

Also remember that quad core CPUs are likely to run hotter since there's 4 dies in the same size package as a dual core.

(If you want to throw out some scary numbers, my pentium D used to go past 70C when under heavy loading for more than a few mins.)

You can get it for the intels also. I swear by these things, honestly. It's one of the only things I've ever bought that works as advertised. Read up on Thermo-electric Cooling(TEC)....it's not just about the fan. It also has a unit that mounts in a drive bay with a temp readout that is supposedly about as accurate as you can get.

Concerning the heat, I think above 50c is way hot, but I'm very sensitive to it. Above 40c is where I've seen weird things happen, such as the dreaded spontaneous reboot.

Just got a couple of low end E2160s (1.8GHz), some people have overclocked these to 3.4GHz

The 2.4GHz Q6600 is plodding along happily at 2.6GHz (+10%) and the 1.8GHz E2160 is also doing 2.6GHz (+44%) without breaking a sweat. Core 0 of the E2160 is twentysomething degrees and the heatsink isn't even warm.

To overclock both these I...

- Changed the FSB to 289MHz
- Set PCIe frequency to 100MHz (don't want to overclock the video card)
- Set DDR2 frequency to the appropriate value below 800MHz (the list of values changes with the FSB setting)
