anyone here use hostgator?

I'm having some serious issues...I may just be stupid but I can't figure it out. First of all my domains that I registered a week ago still give a dns error when I try to access them but also I can not figure out how to upload files to parked domains. When I access my account through ftp and enter the "www" folder there is a folder with the name of one of my domains but none of the others. Is this where I am supposed to upload my files? And why are the other parked domains not listed?

And this may be a stupid question but if that directory in the "www" folder with the same name as one of my domains IS where I'm supposed to upload the website then when my dns DOES start working if my main domain is ww w.domain1.c om and my secondary is ww w.domain2.co m does that mean when people access w ww.domain2.co m they will actually go w ww.domain1.co m/domain2/ ?

I've emailed them but haven't gotten a reply. Whoever recommended them:

p.s. sorry for the spaces in the fake urls but gfy says I can't post urls yet cause I'm a newbie

If you want to upload content why are you parking them? Set them up as usable domains.

After a week your dns should be working. Are you using the exact dns servers from the sign up email?

mydaisydukes you just log into your server and place your index page and related materials for your site in the www folder.

Do you have the domain name pointing to the right name server?

ns1.domainname.com, ns2.domainname.com ns3.domainname.com

Did you transfer your domain name or is a third party hosting such... if a third party is hosting your domain name then you have to enter the web host name server info the proper location within the domain name host...

Also after you point your domain name to your web server it may take up to 24 hours for you to be able to just type in your domain to gain access from such...

Good luck,

.

I have a dedicated with them. Their support is horrible. Repeat horrible. If it's not something they know off the top of their heads they are just like, sorry, we can't help you. Submit a ticket (which means you won't get an answer for quite some time and it will take 2 weeks to resolve an issue that can be taken care of by talking to a knowledgeable tech for 10 minutes. But the bandwidth is cheap and I haven't had a problem with the server itself. I'm going to be sticking with them for now.

Live Dose: I thought the parking thing was setting them up as usable domains. I can't figure out how else to add them to my account. Do you know?

And everyone else, yes I did the dns thing right, that part I do know how to do. I have my domains registered with godaddy and I've never had this problem with two other domains I have registered through them (hosted somewhere else)

I have emailed support but no reply yet.

I was just thinking about what you said you parked them in your cpanel and you have pointed the domains on godaddy to the hostgators ns1domainame
You dont need to park them in your cpanel on hostgator

"Parked domains are a place holder site. You park it on top of another site and it becomes a single page of the site you park it on"
Maybe this is your problem

I believe that you should be uploading files to public_html folder where it will automatically be duplicated to the www folder....also you probably don't want to park the domain if you are intending it to be viewed and live, as parked domain names are generally domains names that are registered with the InterNIC (and therefore reserved), but are not active for website or ecommerce service.

Parking domain names is useful if you have a domain name that you would like to reserve, but do not intend to use immediately. One of the advantages of parking domain names is that your domain is available when you are ready to use it. If you have a domain that you do not intend to use for a period of time, you may want to park it and save on monthly fees.

I think what you are looking to do is to add a sub domain. You can find detailed instructions on adding sub domains HERE

You can access the entire cPanel User Manual HERE and if you still are experiencing problems use their LIVE SUPPORT I have always had any issues or questions answered immediately through their 24/7 live chat support.

Good luck with that and I hope that this info will prove to be useful for you

I was about to pitch in, but the guys already mentioned what needs to be done. I've been hosting at hostgator for a while and with no problems. Their support have been really helpful.

If you want to park your domains and use them, you will need to add them as an "addon" domain in the cpanel on your hosting account.

Then to use them, login to your main ftp account, click public_html and look for a folder name the same as the "addon domain"
Upload all the site contents to it there.

For the domain dns settings, you will need to set them up so they are pointing to the dns settings hostgator provided.

Now if you want to park them, delete any custom name servers such as those of hostgator from the domain and use the park dns servers godaddy provides.

Thank you everyone, you're right I should have been using the add-on domain not the parked domain.

But there is still a problem with the dns because even the MAIN url does not work.

Today I spent an hour trying to get someone on the phone or in their chat support. They never replied to the support ticket I opened several days ago either.

I am so pissed off. They've completely wasted an entire week for me. I've been sitting here twiddling my thumbs waiting for this. Today I called my credit card company to tell them not to accept anymore charges and sent a final email to cancel the account after 3 unsuccessful tries at the phone.

Hey I just wanted to let you know that on your livecamdiva website there is a sample login for people to see what the program is like but it says that the account has been suspended. FYI

To check your dns configuration and response, use this site :

http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.aspx

They give you a fast up to date situation. DNS starts resolving after 10 minutes to 24 hours, depending on the update frequency of the main dns servers ...

Also, clear your cache, otherwhise you could still see a non responsive site, even if it is ...

This is why to use the tool above.

Support has NOT been live and ready to help. I was in a chatroom for almost 30 minutes just to get to the "and what is your url?" question. I can't sit there waiting 10 minutes for each reply.

directfiesta: I got people in other countries to double check for me and it didn't work for them either.

Well your dns is not configured properly . Does DNS check show you the dns that HostGator gave you during signup ? If yes, then the zone on their servers could be " misconfigured " .

If no, then you are not pointing to their ns servers, so go back to godaddy ( or your registrar ) and correct.

You can add dns for free at zoneedit.com

And if they do resolve but you have no site, it is possible that you uploaded your file in the wrong directory ...

Wow. That hasn't been my experience at all. They only seem to be good at extremely simple questions. I like reliablehosting.com. They have the best support I've ever experienced so far by a long shot. Their bandwidth is a bit pricey though.

Yeah I guess I got lucky. Same with epass, while a lot had really bad experience, I didn't have any probs.

for anyone that cares it was finally a rep in the cancellation department that fixed the problem, a woman no less. She discovered that my dns was entered into the wrong account AND that even when the dns was fixed they had a forwarding set on my domain to a domain that doesn't even exist. Fantabulous. Oh well it is working now.
