honest to god .. im just happier working in a cleaner environment, more colorful and well thought out, thats out of the box. i know you can theme windows, but thats clunky.

the way programs interact with each other without the need for Clipboard, thats the real perk

no crashes, no bullshit spyware or having to worry about said spyware

Well ... I hate to say it ... but I love Vista ... it was a little rocky to start ... but there's nothing you can do on your Mac that I can't do just as easily and fast on Vista. I'm sorry, but as nice looking as the Mac OS is and as clean and neat as the boxes are, there's very little genuine reason for switching to the Mac permanently.

My Vista PC NEVER crashes anymore ... I experience my first blue screen in one whole year yesterday and it was due to a fucked driver file, not Vista. In fact, 99% of all blue screens and crashes are due to bad software or drivers. Not the OS.

The reason Mac's don't have this terrible reputation is because only 10 of the PC world actually uses them. 90% of the world uses Windows. I mean, it's the same as Samsung having 4x more returns on their screens than Sony. That's because Samsung sell 10x more units.

I'm sorry but Vista is great ... I have a pretty fucking nice spec'd PC, that cost me half what the exact same spec Mac costs, and I have no problems with my Operating System. That shouts common sense to me.

All I know is PCWORLD wrote an article about how Macs run Vista the fastest, that you were too stupid to find an FTP program, and are basing your "Mac Knowledge" off of 2 Days experience (I have used PC's longer than you).

Still waiting for you to name 1 thing you can do on a PC you can't on a Mac. But, you always were just a clueless blowhard who talks out his ass anyway.

I'm really really trying to like my new mac. Most things I've got figured out over the last couple of months. I feel I'm almost as good with it now as my PC. But this shit about it never crashing is garbage, in fact my programs lock up far more often it seems, or sometimes just close for no reason...

Things that annoy me are the way Mac opens most programs, meaning 12 windows open for one program and seeing my desktop between the windows which if I accidentally click on I am no longer in the program I was using.

So if I have Photoshop and dreamweaver open I have a ton of seemingly independant windows open all over the place. If someone knows how to contain these programs in a single window I'd like to know. For an ADD multitasker this is one of my biggest peeves.

Also why the hell does nothing really maximize? What the hell is the point of a big wide screen if the maximize function never uses the whole screen?

Not to mention finder is retarded, moving folders and files around just about requires you to open 2 separate finder windows.

And how come the delete button doesn't delete anything? I have to right click / move to trash or drag it to the garbage can. Why can't I just highlight and press delete?

my biggest peeve... my fucking Ipod which I was sooo stoked to turn into a Mac formatted Ipod... I just fucked myself because a PC ipod can be used as a portable HD for both Mac and PC, a Mac formatted ipod can only be used as a HD for other macs...

Maybe I'm just being a Mactard of the other kind, maybe it's the beer, but Mac could really take over if they made some other things just make sense.

And for what they cost, just give me a real 2 button mouse.

Use Spaces. It's like having 4+ monitors in 1. Takes a few minutes to figure it out, but once you do its good times.

You can also hold down the Apple key and hit the Tab button and it will cycle thru the programs, you can also quit programs this way by continuing to hold down the Apple Key and hitting Q on the program(s) you want to quit, tabbing thru them.

It Maximizes to the size need to fit all of whatever it is you are looking at, if you want it bigger for some reason, you can grab the bottom right corner and drag it bigger, but there is really no reason to make it bigger unless you don't like seeing your background.

Just drag the file or folder to where you want it, hold it there and it will spring up that folder or drive. You don't need to open two windows.

Apple Key + Delete does that.

So I'll repeat the answer: Run both Windows and OS X out of the box.

"Well if you don’t mind your PC getting screwed then go ahead and try out this tutorial."

You can run BOTH too. Or 3 or 4 or more... Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, BeOS, etc, etc, etc.

aico great points, thanks.
I guess I am still thinking PC, as Macheads would say.
As for the mouse I have the mighty mouse, which has right click but if your pressure is off just a bit it's a crap shoot whether you'll get a right or left click. Not to mention all the fan fare about Mac and intel, making Mac better for gaming... Many games have easy functions that require both mouse buttons to be held at the same time which can't be done on a mighty mouse. (afiak)

Really though thanks for the tips they were helpful.

No problem. Also you can change the button configurations in the System Prefs under Keyboard/Mouse. So you can make the scroller button be the right or secondary button ;) this should help your gaming a little.

Anything else you can't figure out, just ask, there is usually a way to do it, and it's usually pretty simple.

Sorry but the argument that a Mac can run Vista too is stupid. Reason? All that proves is that the Mac is actually just a PC.

Mac is it's OS. Not the hardware. The hardware on a Mac is now PC based, but it's just hardware. The only reason to buy a Mac is the OS. And the OS really doesn't give me any reason to switch.

Vista isn't terribly ugly. Sure, MacOS looks nicer, but damn, if that's the only reason to spend double my money, fuck off.

I can do everything on my PC in Vista, as easily and fast if not in some cases faster, than on your Mac. Fact.

And one other thing ... The only company making major products on the Mac is Apple. Pretty much everyone else sends stuff the Mac's way late (Adobe), or with less features (Msn messenger etc)

So there!

Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Before I switched to Mac I thought Mac users were a bunch of whiny little bitches that talked shit about PCs because they have nothing good to say about their own stuff. In general I prefer Mac for most of my development work, but I'd have to say, as a photographer PC's have much better workflow for photography. That's not what everyone else will tell you but 90% of the people who say otherwise haven't done professional photography workflows on both platforms for an extended period of time. Color management on the Mac is fucking retarded if you don't have one of Apple's inferior overpriced displays. What's the point of having a color calibrated monitor if Aperture and Lightroom aren't going to use the fucking thing and fuck up all your colors. It's funny because some shitty ass program that doesn't do any color management gets the colors right, but if you use professional photo software on the mac and don't have a Cinema everything is fucked up. I have to do all my RAW conversion on my Macbook pro just so the photos on my screen look like what is actually being saved to disk. I can open the same physical file in 3 different applications and they all look different. I takes me so much longer to do things on a Mac. Having unix on a Mac for your desktop is great though. Window management is better for the most part but it's a pain in the ass to have to resize your window from the bottom right and then move your window and resize and again and repeat until you get it right . I wish you could just resize from any corner of the window like you can on PC. Stability is about the same on Mac and PC. My PC had slightly better stability I think. Spotlight on the Mac simply rules!!! Although the Finder for file navigation and moving files around is PATHETIC compared to Windows explorer on the PC. But in general, I spend 95% of my time on Mac because most of the time I am developing.

I had a g17 for a year and a half and then sold it to go back to PC. I didnt mind OSX but when I would be working on stuff, programs would shut down for no reason and I would lose the work. After this happend for the 100th time I said fuck it. Sucks because I spend 3800 on the laptop and ebayed it for 850....

Finder sucked too. It also seems that programs that were carried over from PC like ICQ, looked like they were stripped down for people riding the short bus.

Now lets translate that to a car. If you bought a 35,000.00 dollar car and it died driving it off the lot would you be impressed?

the fact that Macs run Windows operating systems clearly proves that Microsoft is far superior. Mac fanboys spent all this money on their little machines that offer no functionality so they go to save the day and install Microsoft OS on it.

I don't understand why Mac fanboys can't add two and two. Is cute little design and being a fanboy so important for you that you're willing to overpay hard core even though you’re sacrificing on everything else?

Mac:
  • MP3 players suck ass. All of them...ESPECIALLY "iTunes" Why can't Mac users embrace an MP3 player that doesn't look like a spreadsheet?
  • No real blog editor. After using windows live writer, nothing else compares.
  • Mac only has 2 "must have" applications. TextMate and Coda. Windows has 10+ applications I consider to be must haves. Some of the best Windows applications have no Mac equivalent. I know I can run those apps on Mac using parallels or fusion but why bother when I can run them natively in Windows?
  • No FTP clients that can compare to FlashFXP. NONE. Yes, I have a Transmit license and it sucks too.
  • I like games. No, I LOVE games. No Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, etc on Mac.

Love the mac. Gotta get a mac desktop. Lots of great open-source applications and a lot less problems!

iTunes is the best thing since Winamp came out in the 90's or when ever it was. Who cares if it looks like a spreadsheet, all I want is easy access to my music.

I have plenty more must haves on my Mac. I really don't miss any Win applications.

Transmit, NcFTP, Cyberduck and Yummy FTP are all great FTP clients. My favorite is Transmit because of it's Applescript support. Easy to make droplets.

Team Fortress 2 - works
Counter-Strike - works
UT - works

Look at CrossOver 6.2

Some like Mac, some don't. I like it and will never change back to Win.

Planning on building a Time machine and going back to the late 80's?

I give up. Trying to explain to a Mac fan why PC is superior is like trying to tell a 5 year old why he can't go to Chuck E. Cheese.

The big problem with most Macs (Imac specifically) is that it is an obsolete crappy laptop board and CPU.

To get something close to my PC desktop you would have to buy the Mac Pro with the 3 gHz 8 core setup and 8800 video. This would cost three times as much as my box and still wouldn't be as fast due to a slower memory bandwidth and the fact that my new motherboard supports PCI-E2.

I get 254 FPS playing CS: Source on my PC. It simply rocks.

I do like OS X... I love the way Apple does things. But their hardware is always crap.

i love all the stupid argments about mac vs pc that are mostly mac issues from 1999. just use whatever you like, mac or pc. but mac os x is way ahead of windows now, fact.

That argument only works if the Mac fan never went PC in the first place.

This one is classic. And all very true as I'm finding out.

I'm still not feeling the whole Mac thing... it is sexy as hell, but it seems difficult to fuck with Finder compared to Explorer (I am constantly moving and organizing files and finder pisses me off daily with how it works, or in most cases doesn't)

There also seems to be no easy way to rename a bunch of files easily in finder... and I know about that automator thing... but it's just more steps in my workflow for nothing compared to PC.

As for being better for media I'm really starting to think Mac is dropping the ball because there is no native program to just roll through pics for a view and quick look over. You have to either add them to iPhoto (fuck that) or preview. Even if the next pic is in the same folder, preview wont scroll to it unless you specifically open each picture. Microsoft Vista, XP or 95 anything way easier to do all these things. If anyone knows of a good alternative to ACDsee Pro let me know.

I'm really thinking all the pretty wrapping ain't worth it.

that's probably why more and more Mac owners run Windows on their machines. They bought an overpriced and underpowered machine with crappy OS but luckily it's possible for them to upgrade to Windows so they can actually use their Macs reasonably, now that they spent so much money for it.
