Which Video Companies will go out of business in 2008

I have been producing content for nine years. I started out releasing my content on VHS and switched to DVD format in 2002. I released 4 DVD's in January, one DVD this month, and have one more coming out next month. I am leaning towards the idea that this will be the last content that I release on DVD.

I am amazed how many traditional DVD producers and companies have failed to grasp the concept that the DVD business is dead, and that Blu-Ray is not going to save it.

This is from today's AVN.com about Third Degree letting Amy Ried out of her contract.

"We just came to an agreement to go our separate ways," he said. "She had a lot more that she wanted to do; for example, she wants to do a lot more internet, and we?re just not there yet."

Wilson said Third Degree is "finally turning the corner" in its plans for future growth, with an emphasis on hi-def and interactive productions to be released on Blu-ray disc.

"Blu-ray is more conducive to the quality we?re doing [than standard DVD]," said Wilson. "We have four HD DVDs out now, so we?ll reissue those in Blu-ray. We hope to do at least one every other month, between us and [sister studio] Zero Tolerance. We?ll see what the schedule allows."

I wonder how many companies are not going to make the transition to an internet based distribution model and will go out of business in the next year.

DVD is dieing, and we haven't seen the tip of the iceberg yet. Wait until we download entire two hour feature length movies in seconds..... And instnatly stream that to our wide screen TVs. That will be the final nail in the coffin.

It wasn't long ago that shooting for the internet was looked down upon by both porn stars and their agents.

I'd say MOST of the porn companies in LA, that haven't opened their affiliate programs yet, will be hurting for sure

Most of the traditional DVD companies have some type of cash program.

The problem is they have no idea how to market or drive traffic to them.

There is a reason why Apple is holding off on putting Blue-rays in their machines... With downloadable HD video (which they sell) why would they want to lose out on that revenue?

I DISAGREE 100% that the dvd buisness is dead. My numbers are the best they have ever been and have rose steadily the last 18 months. You gotta know what your doing, use the right talent , right editor , box cover designer.
You cant just shoot a few scenes, slap a box together and think if you dont sell 2500 pieces out the door..oh welll dvds are dead.

You are correct.

the sad thing is there are plenty of adult internet companies that would be glad to work with the content and produce money for the productions and overall continuation.

On Demand Content, DVD, , Cable On Demand, Web Site Subscriptions are the keys and seriously only a few guys got a grasp of that.

In the past few years it has been sad to see a few labels fall off the map that made great porn.

I think that DVDs in some format will be around for a long while and coexist with online downloading and streaming on PPV or VOD. It's competitive but there is still money to be made if you have good movies.

We have had this discussion. I know that Juicy is doing a good for you with your product; however, you have to admit that if you didn't use that same content to bring you revenue on the net you would lose money.

You yourself have opened up a cash program within the last year.

It is only a matter of time before more traditional DVD companies go out of business.

Luckily you do not fall into this category, as you shoot for other web based companies, resell your content on the net, and have a cash program.

You are very lucky that you work for one of the few traditional DVD companies that understand your value, yet you are still underpaid in my opinion.

Most traditional DVD company owners can't, or won't educate themselves on the net; as a result, they don't appreciate or understand it.

Dan! you have a bad case of ADD?.... hehe. just messin with ya bro.

DVD companies can still make money, a lot of the traditional DVD companies own huge libraries of killer content. But I have to agree that a lot of them do not know how to market this on the web.

For example (and I apologize in advance to anyone who takes this personally) Evil Angel, they have tried it several ways, this company has superb content and could make a killing and blow many others out of the water. But for some reason it is not doing it. I do not know why, maybe webmasters aren't promoting them, maybe their aff program isn't ran the way it should. I have no idea, but fact of the matter is. Unless a DVD company is willing to team up with some of the bigger players on the web it's going to be tough for them.

TT Boy for example, OC Cash and him are a great combo. I am pretty sure that Brandon Iron is doing awesome with Braincash as well.

DVD as a stand alone product is tough, you "might" break even, you need to do a lot more to make money, phone, VOD, paysites etc etc.. whore your content out so to speak.

just my 2 cents

Sebastian

No offense to you or your company, but many companies let you sell their titles because they don't know HOW to do what the big aff programs do. if they knew I doubt you would have so many titles. I guess this is good for you. They are using your store to generate some extra cash. If they ever do smart up and decide to open their own sites they will have to fight with their own content that was once exclusive to them.

Dvds are a dead dog and sales are down 60% from 3 years ago--

We are lucky that our incredibledigital dvds are selling in the top 10 in the world for our big boob and milf lines, but even though we are at the top we are only making beer money!

Yes I believe many of these dvd companies will either sell, consolidate or go out of business this year! We are in the process of negotiating with some of the largest dvd companies in the world for partnerships and internet paysite rights, because they have no idea how to run paysites...

Wish i had a brighter outlook,,,

That's for the insight.

I am sure that many DVD based companies would love for a company like yours to manage and run pay sites for them.

The problem is that their a very few cash progams that have the resources to take on the very large number of DVD companies that exisit.

For as long as I have been in the biz I have seen so many companies come along seem like they were the biggest thing since sliced bread then end up toast. A lot of old school companies that tried to outsource their internet just got burned. Others tried to create internal departments and found it impossible to sort between the glorified reps that really don't have a clue other than posting on message boards and self taught programmers that have ego issues and write code that basically implodes on itself when the volume reaches a certain level.

Sun Tzu once said "victory is living long enough to see the bodies of your enemies floating past in the river".

I say surviving adversity and change is 9/10s of success in any business.

Very true. I can write a book on companies that burned money on so called marketing consultants and in house software developers who did all they can to keep their jobs by taking the companies IT department hostage...worse programs who turn out to be marketing and marketing people who think they can code.

I hope some traditional DVD company owners read this post and pay attention to what Far-L posted.

No one has been more successful producing amateur DVD's than Homegrown Video.

Very well said my friend.

I can tell you one thing, I highly doubt Third Degree will be one of the companies.

i doubt any of the DVD companies who have partnered up with affiliate programs would say they are doing 'awesome'.

maybe TTBoy if he's got a good deal with OC Cash since it's a revshare program that seems to do well.

Look my friend, the studios who sign with WWC not just sign for us to license their content through WWC but sign off their internet rights and i make their internet decisions and trust me they are building sites with their new releases...we all dont have a choice, studios are eventually establishing their entire business online....

so to clear things up, we get exclusive internet rights meaning all internet rights....hint you will see many newer titles first in WWF and first on WWC before anywhere else online ( unless sites are build with new releases which you will hear about to promote...)

No need to defend yourself, like I stated earlier. UNLESS a DVD company partners with an established web company it is going to be tough for them to do it on their own. My first thought was cash programs, and sure companies like yours are also options. But fact of the matter is that companies that are strong in one market don't always succeed on their own in another, even though it is both porn. No comparison.

Ask XXX Jay or JC of OC Cash how well TT Boy has done.

"Awesome" would probably be a good word to describe it.
