![]() Or even dual booting it with XP? I want to play around with it and learn some Linux, but am wondering how useful it is as a main system. Does anyone here use it for non-uber-geeky purposes?

Hm, looks good so far, then! What about doing productivity stuff? Is it demanding hardware-wise?

put xp on the first partition then ubuntu on the second and let it control the boot loader and then you up and down arrow to select the os you want to boot into and press enter
hardware wise, it uses a lot less resources than xp to run, plus it is more secure try it, you'll like it

That is probably the last distro you'll want to install if you actually want to learn some linux.

Let's put it this way. XP keeps getting unstable after a few months and I don't want to go Vista. I'd rather go Linux if I can.

That different, eh? Hm. What would you recommend then, both for a bit of learning and stable productivity?

Like u-Bob I prefer Slackware myself, but it isn't for most people (though not as much now as versions past, you do have to manually edit a few config files), so if you just want to "use" linux without learning too many new things... Debian, Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mandriva, PCLOS, Zenwalk... pretty much those in the top 10 or so on http://distrowatch.com will suit you.

Photoshop 7 and Dreamweaver 2004 can be used under wine ( wine uses windows libraries to run windows applications under linux ) but If you want to stop using windows and use all adobe products and edit some videos why not buy a Mac. Believe me, you will love it ![]() Good luck |

Linux can run programs properly, programs made for linux. But it can run a lot of windows programs under wine without any problem.

I use Fedora 9 personally... more robust I think.
But for beginning, ubuntu is a great way to go. And no dual boot. I really don't like Windows. And I get my work done just fine without it. |

I'd say vectorlinux is a good one to begin with... user friendly + the stability of a slackware system.

I've been running Linux as my only operating system for 11 years, but I guess you could call that geek purposes...
Been using Ubuntu for 3 years now and it's great, nice and easy. I don't even program much anymore, but I use linux software for video editing and encoding, building sites and galleries, cropping thumbs etc, all my day to day webmaster tasks. |

Pretty much what I mean is I will switch once my programs that I want support Linux, I know its not Linux' fault that Adobe doesn't make their software compatable, but I'm not switching to something "similar" to what I want to use, because there is alternatives. I'll wait till Adobe gets it there act straight.

Anyone professing the strengths of Slackware is someone who either is perpetually stuck in 1995, or doesn't yet realize that unpacking biinary payloads into a root directory with marginal bounds checking is a bad idea.
That said, I don't give a shit what you use. Pay me to support it.
