There's officially water on Mars (pics+water)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - NASA scientists said on Thursday they had definitive proof that water exists on Mars after further tests on ice found on the planet in June by the Phoenix Mars Lander.

"We have water," said William Boynton, lead scientist for the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer instrument on Phoenix.

It amazes me they can figure out what gasses and materials planets/stars are made of or what gasses are surrounding the planets/stars so fucking far away from us. Like places impossible to reach with our current techology but it took this long to figure there's something as simple as water on the planet next door.

I clicked the link, for a split second I thought I fell for another picture of a glass of water sitting on top of a Mars candy bar.

Only ignorant people ask what space exploration has doen for us. By the way $400 mill is like what we spend in 3 or 4 days in Iraq.

But really... what HAS it done for us?

Iraq is a huge waste of money too, but it doesn't justify pissing away tax dollars on space exploration. If a private company wants to explore space, then I think that's awesome. But enough people are already struggling to feed their families, their hard earned money shouldn't be pissed away on pet projects they have no control over.

if it wasn't for space exploration you would even have the ability to be sitting here asking people this question. How is that for starters? Do you enjoy the convenience of cooking food fast in a microwave oven? Thank space. If we stuck to earth we wouldn't have satelited telling us hurricanes are head our way or tornadoes for that matter. We wouldn't have spy satellites. See satellites are in SPACE. So no cable or Directv for you. Just the same 5 lousy channels. Medical technology, thank space. And because it's the government not private business doing it, the government can't file patents on new technologies derived from space so ALL can benefit from it.

Seriously THINK before asking. Or at least look shit up yourself.

I bet many were asking the same question when we were shooting dogs into space on first rockets or launching first satellites .. i mean who the fuck would want to have things fly all the way up there anyway?

OK
1. All planets and yes even stars are made of the same elements, the variances come in the density, Jupiter for instance is almost large enough to become a star (almost is in cosmic terms)

2. determining the various gases and whatnot that are on a planet is a relatively simple process even through a telescope, different elements reflect light in different wavelengths, by looking at the light you can get the basics. When you land a probe there you can determine even trace amounts of elements.

Finally in terms of what its worth the answer is what is it worth to know where we came from and where we may be going, what would it be worth to colonize another planet. What would it be worth to find remnants of an advanced civilization there that has long since died.

The possibilites are close to endless. So what is knowledge worth?

That's all great, but I still don't want my tax dollars going towards it

Taxes should be used for necessities IMO. The US doesn't even have universal health care yet and it's pissing away money to find out if Mars has water? Makes no sense.
