Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 17 September 2008: Canon announces the full frame, 21.1 Megapixel EOS 5D Mark II: the first EOS with full High Definition video capability.

Compact, lightweight with environmental protection, EOS 5D successor boasts a newly designed Canon CMOS sensor, with ISO sensitivity up to 25,600 for shooting in near dark conditions. The integration of HD movie capability into a high-end 21.1 Megapixel camera opens a multitude of new possibilities for photojournalists and news photographers. With its full frame CMOS sensor and outstanding ISO performance, the EOS 5D Mark II will appeal to any photographer in search of the finest camera equipment available ? from studio and wedding to nature and travel photographers.

Video camera function is worthless. It's as worthless as video camera with high quality still feature. If I wanted to shoot video, I’d get myself a video camera that's entirely built to accommodate video taping. Was waiting for 5D update, but this is a big turn off. One more thing in it that can get fucked.

IMHO, video is a waste but I'll be picking up one of these cameras anyway. Been waiting for a 5D replacement.

I'm thinking the video function might come in handy in some situations.

During a studio shoot, I'd obviously shoot video using a video camera. But there are situations (nightclubs and events, for example) where you don't necessarily want to be lugging still and video cameras around. Might be nice to have the option to capture some video in those situations.

All I want is 4 mega-pixels, full frame, a professional body and I don't want to spend more than $3000. What's with loading these cameras with all these useless features. I want RAW files but I don't want it taking up 20 MB on my hard drive for every photo. The only Canon camera that does full frame and a pro body is the 1ds and I'm not spending 8000 for something when for the features I want it shouldn't be more than 3000.

Low res video sensor upsized to "high" res pic
or
High res pic sensor downsized to low res video

See the diff? You can take away detail (and quality), but you can never add it.

it is priced lower than the new nikon d700 which is also full frame but only at 12 mp and no video capabilities but similar in all other areas.
sounds like a good deal to me, at 22 mp it must be on the heels of most medium digital backs. canon shooters must be excited about this.
HD video? I can see some photojournalists having good use for this feature but not many other photographers. But fun thing to have..

Medium format resolutions with 35mm frames can not compete. Just because the resolution is there does not mean the quality is there. It is a law of physics that the smaller the sensor cells the more they more noise they will have.

I use Nikons but this camera looks to be a great value. Nikon seen to have stopped at 12 megs whereas Canon are still aiming higher.
I dont think the video feature is a good idea as someone pointed out its just something else to go wrong. After 12 megs the increase in quality will not show on the internet at 72 pixels but the thing to look for is D-max this will give you a much better picture the larger the number. You can see this when you scan a picture with a cheap scanner with a d-max of say 2.4 then scan the same image on a scanner with a d-max of 4.00 The quality difference is amazing

Wow, that shows one big advantage over a typical consumer/prosumer video camera... awesome DoF which would be impossible with a smaller sensor. Plus the large range of native lenses rather than fooling around with screw on adaptors.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is the fact that a DSLR body is designed to be braced for a single capture - it may be a little less stable for moving images...

I've had a 1DsII and a high level consumer video camera for a few years now, might be time to think about consolidating and upgrading.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the RED DSMC (Digital Stills & Motion Camera) system yet.
Scarlet will give Canon and Nikon a run for its money (when RED decides to finally...FINALLY release the darn thing)

Check it out here: http://www.red.com/epic_scarlet/

As far as I can tell the FF35 sensor is the same size as a 35mm 3:2 full frame DSLR... $9750 for "brain only" - do ya think it will compete with the 5D?

You are correct, the FF35 is 36x24 and therefore full frame size.

They also offer the S 35 Mysterium X sensor-based brain at around $2500, with a basic level full DSMC camera at around $3K.
The S35 should more than suffice for most people, it's 30x15 so not quite full frame but close.

At THAT price point they will surely give Canon and Nikon a run for their money, at least in semi pro and pro circles.

And since one can just swap out sensors without having to buy a whole new camera one could start "small" with the Mysterium X and upgrade later to the Monstro/FF35 which is full frame.
However Canon, unlike RED, actually releases products, not just pretty renderings of it.
While the RED ONE has been out for a while we'll have to see when the rest of the bunch actually shows up.
Once this happens purchasing pro level photo and video gear will be a whole 'nother game.

Personally I'm very intrigued by RED but until they have all their ducks in a row won't jump on the wagon just yet.

nikon just released their new flagship
D3X at a stunning 24.5 MP capture (35.9 x 24 mm)
MSRP $8K

i kinda miss my old Fuji S2, best skin tones ever in jpeg mode..
how are the new fujis? i could see myself getting another fuji if they still produce those nice skin tones.
