New HD camcorder

Which ones out there are a real bargain now? Looking for a Mini DV HD camcorder. Do we all have to go "pro" or are the consumer models just as good?

I was actually looking for something similar to what you suggested. Only difference is this records on mini DV while the one your suggested records on SD or SDHC cards. I would prefer to store my original video on back up mini DV's since they are apparently way cheaper than SD or SDHC cards.

Sony HDR-SR11 60GB : After you capture your video, how are you storing your original video if you only have 60GB capacity on this unit? Obviously you are capturing each shoot and formatting the HD on the camcorder for space. You could probably shoot what about 4 hours on this 60GB I'm guessing? How are you storing original video? I like to store all my original content on miniDV's. Makes it easy to create a movie later, or whatever from the original content.

I bought a Canon Vixia HV30 this week and it's great. It was $699 from Dell... which is almost $200 cheaper then Best Buy or the like.

Is anyone having issues with this HD camcorder with low light? I've heard that HD camcorders are still behind the times and require more lighting then standard def.

I have a great PC with quad core 2.4 GHz 4GB of ram, etc, etc. 512 graphic card. What I meant is that I just still like working with the Mini DV's and storing edited content on them. Yeah maybe storing all my content on DVD's maybe better ;-)

Are people experiencing low light issues with any of the new HD camcorders?

I am also in the market for a HD camcorder. Anyone else suggest the Cannon VIXIA HV30?

Actually what I meant here is to say that I prefer to keep storing on mini DV tapes rather than DVD's. ;-) Just a preference!

have a sony based HD camcorder and like it but not HD. you have to dock the camera and the dock has the USB port to transfer it off. The newer Canon FX11 records it onto SDHC cards. That way you can take a 32GB SDHC card and transfer it there. Wanna grab one of those and i'm a happy camper..

You're thinking of this backwards. You get a single 8GB SDHC card for $20 shipped then you burn them to DVD+DL which are $1.50 tops and WAY more sturdy way to store your video then Mini DV. I'm so glad to be rid of tape. Got all my uncompressed AVCHD content backed up on DVDs in the fireproof safe. They take up so little space in paper sleeves.

I'd never get a hard drive camera either. It's just a moving object that can break. Imagine a hard drive crash in your camera? Bad enough in a computer. Flash drive is much sturdier.

That's the exact camera I got. I love it. Although I use SDHC cards so I can download quickly, and shoot on one while the other downloads. Plus using the 8GB ones makes it the perfect size for DVD+DL backup. The flash drive is really slow, but it will be great for vacation. No cards needed.

Here's some random stuff I did some tests with:

The new Canon HF11 shoots at 24Mbps, 30p at 1080 and still is easily backed up to DVD.

A sony hi def camcorder for 1000 or less will def. get you what you need. I shot with a hi def camera and watched on my wide screen it was like a movie theater.

It is the camera with tapes and worth every penny that ran me less then a g.
