google came out and said recently that it prefers that people don't mod rewrite url's and that it would possibly be better for your search results if you didn't rewrite

All they said is that you can do more harm with poorly rewritten URLs than if you just live them as they were. But yes, they wrote this in such a misleading way

google isn't the ONLY search engine.... if you really want in good with all search engines you won't use "templates" you'll just have all the CONTENT without pretty looks

Google likes html static pages over active but also likes updated original content. So if you can update your site weekly with a static page then that would be the best. But in reality active is needed to keep the site active.
