I get different cultures, etc, etc...however, as a woman..I would like to think I am not 'suppose' to be married off at 8 years old to a much older man. I would like to think I am 'suppose' to have a right to make my own choices.

Yes, I get that. Which also means that we all filter stories like this through our own notions of how society should be. I was using 'suppose' because it had been used in what I was quoting. As a Western woman I find it hard to support any female (or male for that matter) of any age not being able to decide things such as marriage on their own.

Common sense as a definite unmoveable thing does not exist. Onlythe moral value instilled upon you by societal influence. Everybody is gonna hate on me for using this example, but throw your preconceived notions about the idea out the window and consider it that way, as though that were the accepted way of the world. Of course, one's perspective might change if the 8 year old in question happens to be your own daughter. As a father you might not like the notion of some 50 yr old fuckstick having his way with your little girl the second she hits puberty.

Her actual parents must be on board with it though. Strange customs over there, but it's they who must live with it. I'm quite happy that that sort of thing isn't allowed where I live though. Quite happy.

You know this is fucked up by SA standards too. Most people over there don't support this kind of thing either, and it's not like the whole country is out marrying 8 year olds.

In some circumstances though, the family doesn't have a choice. Women don't work over there so if they don't get married, and their parents are poor, they have no place to go. So when an opportunity arises, they will take it.
