"Society just can't accept the idea that 50 percent of the population could die".....

Ok, so we got the swine flu now.. this reminded me fo the bird flu so I typed www.birdflu.com and found this quote.

Quote:
"I personally believe it will happen and make personal preparations....

Society just can't accept the idea that 50 percent of the population could die. And I think we have to face that possibility....

I'm sorry if I'm making people a little frightened, but I feel it's my role."
-- Robert G. Webster, world-renowned virologist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

I looked it up, the quote is true.

anyway, this got me thinking, do you think we will ever have any kind of global pandemic anymore, like it happened in the past, meaning hundreds of thousands, if not millions people dying from some virus? Seems kinda hard to imagine in todays' age, but I guess some theoretical risk is there all the time.

Or perhaps will we face a virus made as a biological weapon one day?

millions are dying of AIDS (caused by the HIV virus), this virus just works faster, I think I'm going to run to the store and stockpile for the next 2 months or so

well yeah, I didn't mean HIV, I meant something that kills you much faster and is much easier to get infected with..

7 million people die every year from cancer.

as far as that 50% comment. That's bullshit. Even the 1918 spanish flu killed well under 50% of infected people.

Black death is not spanish flu nimrod. Black death happened 700 years ago and it killed so many because everyone was dirty and nasty and didn't eat right. So their immune systems were compromised. Under modern circumstances the black death would have killed maybe 10-20%.

Stop thinking about death and start thinking about living. Might as well worry about being in a plane crash.

I'm not concerned about dying from swine flu at all, just discussing the overall chances of any kind of pandemic.... like others discuss global warming or so...

edit: the quote from the thread title is obviously a fun one, as bird flu is already forgotten, the quote is from 2006 or whatever the year of the bird flu panic was

Better wiki...

"A variant of H1N1 was responsible for the Spanish flu pandemic that killed some 50 million to 100 million people worldwide from 1918 to 1919.

The seasonal flu tends to kill just a fraction of 1% of those infected. In Mexico, about 71 deaths out of roughly 1,000 cases represents a fatality rate of about 7.1%. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, had a fatality rate of about 2.5%.

Statistical projections for this virus pathology based upon the same infection rate as the Spanish flu pandemic and current fatality rate, indicates that as many as 284 million deaths could occur worldwide as a result of the genesis of this new Swine Influenza Virus SIV-H1N1 strain."

As I said 2.5% is MUCH less than 50% also even if 284 million peole died we would regain that many people back within 4 years.

Every year malaria kills 1-3 milions people, seasonal flu 0,5 mln, tuberculosis 1,5 mln.

Pandemic flu would kill not milions but hundreds of milions people

Most of them in places where honestly they need a reduction in population anyways.

judging a kill ratio from past pandemics is silly , none of them were around when we had things like airplanes etc .. granted we have much better understanding of medicine now but still, my feelings are if we had something like the black plague today it would have a higher kill rate

All you need is a mutated/evolved strain of the common cold and it can wipe out half the world easily - not that that's a horrible thing, I agree with those who say the earth is currently overpopulated

There are TWENTY cases in the United States as of now, and only ONE has been hospitalized.

It's massive irresponsibility to flip on a cable news channel and get fed shit about "pandemic" for a solid day. It's like, what? fuck you.

Wash your hands and dont touch your face.

It's only a matter of time before something like this happens. This is where the sheep fuckers up in the woods in Montana have it made. This won't affect them.

This is not a spanish flu only topic. Yes we have better health and medicine now but it did happen once so in my opinion it could happen again. Africa has been devastated by AIDs in some areas. Some African tribes and villages actually have a way to deal with outbreaks in that they close off their communities. This was shown during the ebola outbreaks. But get a deadly fast acting virus into one of the major slums of the world and you will see some serious head counts.

I think it's more probable now than ever that we could get wiped out by a disease. Consider modern travel allows for very quick spread worldwide.
Humans are less diversified than ever before.
Modern medicine has weakened our natural immunities, provides false security and worst actually breeds super bugs.
Humans are overpopulated (disease is major population control).

I'm surprised we haven't all died from some crazy african disease yet but it will happen soon enough and there's not much you can do to prevent it.

We also have a much more globally accessible planet. The virus has already spread to multiple continents in weeks. People just couldn't move around that way in 1918.

However, it's also a much different time technology wise. We all have clean running water in our homes. That in itself helps things dramatically. Most of us can get to a hospital rather quickly and be hooked up to an IV and be given any number of drugs to fight the illness. Sure it'll be bad for the elderly and newborns, but the majority of us should have no issues getting through what will end up just being the worst flu experience we've ever had.

We had this same shit, same sky is falling warnings over the same thing in 1976. 1 person died of Swine Flu, we spent 500 million vaccinating everyone. 30 people died from the vaccinations. Then it went away.

The media makes it's living scaring people with apocalyptic scenarios. I'm considering not even watching the news anymore.

Just looked up some quick statistics on google.
500,000 people worldwide die every year from the "normal" flu
56 MILLION people die each year worldwide from all causes. 60% of that, according to the W.H.O. is from cancer, diabetes, respiratory disease, obesity, heart disease, etc.
2 million people die each year from A.I.D.S. (mostly in Africa)

From what I'm seeing in these stats...we have a REAL good shot at dying from cancer and heart disease. A very tiny chance of dying from aids and a 1/4 of the chance with aids of dying from the "normal" flu

Looks like aids and flu's and other viruses don't really impact that greatly when you look at the big picture.

You could pretty much wear your little condom and never feel what real pussy is like and STILL have almost as good a chance of dying from just catching the flu! lol Wouldn't that be a bitch? And statistically the most dangerous things we do is get in our car and drive. And also eat the crap we eat.

But we'll get in our cars all day long, and eat artery clogging/cancer causing foods...but make sure to wear a condom and be afraid of the swine flu. heh-heh

Those stats are skewed by "natural" deaths though Robbie. Nobody ever dies of "old age" they died because they had a heart attack, or cardiac arrest, cancer, clogged tubes, infections, aneurysms, etc etc.

For many of those people it was just time to go.

I always found it interesting reading about great people in the history of the world, war torn generals and whatnot who died from simple stuff like stubbing their toe, getting an infection and dying from it.

Of course it is coming. There will be a day when a great portion of the human population dies. 50% seems like a fair enough number. Nature trumps all, and in nature there are cycles. There is a balance continuously in play which requires maintainenance. Mankind has disrupted this balance, and the scales are tipping. Nature as a force maintains this balance, infallibly. There are simple laws in nature which can not be "beaten" no matter how hard one tries, and people need to come to grips with this. One being that an environment only contains the resources to support such a population before the balance is adjusted. This is reality. Mankind has grossly overpopulated the Earth, the human population will see the peak of the bell curve. Nature will restore the balance.

DOOM DOOM DOOOOOMMMMM!!!!!!!

what i laugh at is how they keep saying "no evidence to suggest eating pork could allow you to be infected" lol

they sure do go in damage control quickly, KEEP EATING THAT PORK, lol

Id put my house on that if you ate pork that came from infected pig, you would in fact, get it. They just dont want population to stop eating pork.

funny stuff when you dont consume pigs

The jews were right all along!

Funny how Hitler and his obsession with eugenics went on a warpath to cleanse the world of the Jews. It gave eugenics such a terrible terrible name. Such a terrible name that just the mere mention of the support of eugenics incites rage. The one study that could possibly hold the key to mankind saving itself from certain doom...

Honestly, it seems like the cat is already out of the bag on this one. Most scare episodes have been based on whether it actually gets out and starts spreading and it seems like that has already happened.

However, as of now it seems like just a very virulent flu but not extremely deadly (other than in Mexico for some reason where healthy people have died).

The real issue is how it mutates now that it is out. A second wave could prove deadly or it could just fizzle out. There is no way to know.

Quite a bit of blame has to be put on Mexico and they seem to have waited over a month before implementing the proper control protocols. If they followed the proper techniques, this would have never have reached this point.
