USB to Ethernet? Computer people help me plz
Hi,
I need a way to hook up my Western Digital Media Player to my router, so that I can transfer files to it via the network, vs pulling a 20 feet USB cable to it from my computer... what USB to Ethernet adapter would you recommend, that can get an IP from my router via DHCP that i can connect to via network to transfer files? thanks

yea... you have to transfer all your videos/media to a usb hard drive and then connect that to the WD media player for playing. The unit itself doesn't have a hard drive.

It just won't work that way. The system has to be able to take an ethernet controller. Connecting a USB Ethernet adaptor would do nothing for you; either upgrade to a network device that has ethernet built in, or connect it to your computer and share from there.

Belkin actually makes a product that can do this. You can only access it from one PC at a time.

if you need longer cables, use Ethernet, since USB is limited in length, and can be much slower...

Using this method you don't need to have a usb hdd but you need a usb thumb drive to load the firmware. Check the link below for which adapters are supported and the WDTV wiki has the rest of the tools/tutorials. http://wiki.wdtv.org/doku.php?id=sup...d2a891b95eb360

There are USB extenders out there that run over ethernet. I have one.. costs about $60.. go to CompUSA. i have it connecting to a plotter that is in another room and snaked the ethernet cable over to it.. works great.
so from your computer, you can run USB connection to your media player.. no need to deal with router, you would have a direct connection you can leave it there temp to transfer files, then roll up the cable until the next time you need to transfer files..

I dont think its possible to connect a usb device directly to a router unless that device has the ability to connect (as in you cant connect a thumb drive and it will start downloading).
rather, connect it to your pc then move stuff over, i thikn that is probably your only option unless the media player has the capabilities
