Design Your Own CMS

I'm contemplating writing a CMS for adult sites from the ground up but I'd like to do a little market research before I get started so I thought... why not ask GFY?

What are some of the more used (and liked) CMSs out there (adult focused or other)?

What do you hate about the CMS you're currently using or have used?

What do you really like about the CMS you're currently using or have used?

What would make your life 50 thousand times easier in a CMS?

That's all for now, just wanted to get some thoughts / suggestions from everyone to see where the market stands. If I do write one it will be the best one out there... or I wouldn't even bother. Go big or go home, there's no room for another blah CMS...

No need to write from the ground up, unless you manage to hire a smart ukranian for $200 a month

The last CMS I wrote managed a network of 30 sites each with their own unique subsets of data... Almost 600 tables in all... massive...

I've created a framework over the past 10 years which allows me to rapidly develop just about anything... wrappers for just about every payment gateway, lots of goodies...

This would be a rewritten system customized specifically for the adult industry leveraging the code base I've grown over the past 10 years.

Ah that's just semantics :P But any coder has their own personal library to draw from...

Developers would still say it's ground up when you start with an empty directory structure and add your own tools in ;)

My would be a CMS may not be the best way to utilize your skills. Mainly because the market segment is pretty competitive and has a couple players that really offer everything anyone could need.

I don't know what direction to point you in, but if you're truly a skilled programmer, than almost anything is possible. Another CMS just doesn't seem too lucrative at this point, unless you were a LOT better than the competition.

What I need is a CMS that drives a network of websites. Lots of other domain owners do too. Something that can be loaded up from a central site, and then actively distribute content over multiple sites/domain names.

Competition is good. If you say "someone else has that area covered" than that's not gonna help that person improve their product.

Our system has an optional All Access Pass setup that uses 1 central content database to serve content to multiple front ends.

The result is a true network setup where a member can login to a "main" site and see network-wide updates as well as surf each individual site in the network and see content specific to each site.

It's a pretty slick setup

That's what happens when each site is so specific it requires its own series of tables... Since I was doing online gaming we had say... cityofheroes.gameamp.com ... The content displayed on that site (in addition to the 20 common modules [screen shots, articles, news, interviews, forums, etc...] there was also classes, items, abilities, etc...

So it added up really fast... Add in all the relational tables matching modules with games and users to specific sites they've visited... ratings on virtually every type of thing on the site, a credibility system which awarded users for contributing any type of content and allowed you to get discounts based on your credibility level at our store, just TONs of stuff...

Five years of constant focused development :P
