I had a job interview yesterday. During the interview, I just "felt" it was like something was wrong - that something was just not right. First off, I knew there was a problem when he wanted to meet at a coffee shop for the interview.

So I sent him an email about lunch time to follow up and be congenial.

All I can say is wow, glad I didn't get sucked into working for this guy. I am *done with abusive employers.

Here was his response:

ummmm.. he's not the employer.. he's a recruiter/headhunter. They don't wait, if they have another candidate on the hook. They just want to get paid

Their are a million developers unemployed, if you don't move fast its get taken by some one else. With head hunters they compete with other head hunters, their biz in bad shape too...so all they want to do is place some one ASAP.

Obviously the guy doesn't have time to be jerked around, he called you few hours later, you never responded in a timely fashion, so he hired someone else... I don't get it, what's the problem?

...and if this took place today, then he probably had a friday deadline to come up with a programmer for the client... waiting till 1pm friday afternoon was obviously cutting it too close for him... so he chose someone else for the job...

He didn't find a top programmer in 24 hours, my guess is he interviewed at least a few people during the week, by Thursday 5pm he made a decision who to hire... he thought you were the top candidate so he called you, you took your time calling back, so he went with his number 2 choice... doesn't sound complicated at all to me...

Seems like normal business to me.
They were ready to make a decision and made it.

The guy could have waited a week and maybe you never called back.

You don't have a job, what else were you doing for 3 hours other than being on top of the guy who could have given you one??

He wasn't a dick AT ALL in his reply. He let you know the situation and the reason for the situation. No smart remarks, I didn't sense any sarcasm or attitude there at all.
You should've made sure you were around for his call, you were the one looking for the job after all.

I know what you're saying, but in the end this guy will be successful. The reason why I'm saying that is, from that e-mail he seems like a very good businessman. No bs'ing around, no wasting time, just brutally honest and 100% business orientated. Sometimes you have to be a bit of an asshole to kick it far.

Thats just business. The only thing I see in the e-mail that might even be asshole-ish is the general honesty of his reply. He didn't string you along or anything like that, he just told you that he had made a decision and had gone with it.

What makes you think you are a top coder ? if you are top coder you will be not looking for a Job.

Trust me, I have been hiring coders for all most 20 years and when ever some one says they are the top it raises red flags.

So you wouldn't mind a new possible employee calling you at 11pm or 5am in the morning?

This was a scam from the start, coffee shop interviews for a job, are "Scam" jobs. Expect them to call you back next week.

If he wants you to be professional he should present the company in a professional way.

Good choice not going with a crap company.

Nope, don't think I have dealt with job recruiters before.

I would guess they get paid for each position they get filled. Being so, they are going to get the person that responds the fastest. Probably giving up quality sometimes.

The companies prob have some mad turn over rate.... I just don't understand why a corp would give up probably the most important quality control factor for a company to some guy that will take the fastest phone call.

That would have to be a sad company to work for.

The deal is, that this guy was NOT a recruiter. He claimed that the work would be done for a client of his, but he did own the company.

Oh, and the job posting was on Craigslist. That should have tipped me off right there. :-)

good recruiters get paid to get the person in
and get a bigger bonus if the person stays more that x days.

i never work with recruiters who don't have the double payday
guys who only get paid for the original setup never care about making sure you and the company match up.
