The questioner was using the old testament to ask his questions and Christians believe that the teachings of Jesus in the new testament...over rides the teachings of the old testament...so while 63% of those polled may have stated that they believe the bible in a literal sense...Christians would not believe that they should practice the teachings of the old testament. None the less the video is humorous.

Since they gave their source, it's quite easy to check:
http://legacy.rasmussenreports.com/2005/Bible.htm

I think the main problem is that of the people who believe it to be literally true and the word of God, probably 90% have never carefully read it cover-to-cover.

Are the laws of the OT still binding?
http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/contra/otlaw.html

Since the bible contradicts itself in numerous places, it's quite easy for the religious to pick whatever they want from it.

And either way, most Christians merely use the Bible to support their own, traditional beliefs. Jesus mentions homosexuality and abortion a grand total of 0 times, and poverty several thousands of times. And yet, the religious right tend to focus their energies exactly on those things not mentioned at all.

I stated that "I personally think"...and the reason it is what I personally think it...is because during my lifetime I have spoken with many people of faith...and when I posed questions to them about this or that...their answer often involved the world "allegory"...and this why I also added the word "inerrant...to literal".

The New Testament was compiled by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century AD.

The Roman Gods were losing their popularity and therefore control over the people. To thees people the Pagan Gods had clearly failed and no one was listening to them. Emperor Constantine needed a new religion to regain control and Christianity fitted the bill. He could also decide what was right and what was not. Of all the Gospels that were around at the time he chose 4 and decided the rest waee blasphemy and was prepared to execute anyone who preached them.

The New Testament is also heavily influenced not by Jesus but by Peter. He went to Rome and started preaching at a time when Jews in Palestine were rebelling and killing Romans. Not a good time to start preaching a new version of Judaism.

There are glaring contradictions in the New Testament and this interviewer should of been asking them. Beteen the 4 Gospels that are accepted and others that are being found because they were not destroyed, Dead Sea Scrolls, Agnostic, Gospel of Brian, etc. It's obvious we were sold the short version.

All religions are about 2 things, money and control. That's why they used to find "relics" back in the 10th 13th Century. None have been proved to be authentic and many have been proved to be fakes. But the faithful still turn up to worship to them and drop money in the collection box.

About control. What could be better than saying God knows what you're thinking and I know what God is thinking. BS supreme.

A lot of Americans do believe in the Old Testament as well as the New. They want to teach children Creationism and ban the teaching of Evolution. 90 years on from the John Scopes Monkey Trial and all the evidence that shows Genesis to be a collection of stories these people want to make the truth illegal.

Adam and Eva is an Egyptian story and may even predate them. It's on the walls.

There is no factual evidence about Moses.

Cain killed Abel, God forgive him and marked him so other people and tribes would know he was protected by God. So where did these other people spring from and being as they would of been pagans how would they know God marked him for his protection?

Abel later became a King. So God forgave him. so why have people used "The mark of Abel" as a curse?

Noahs Ark and the flood, never happened the boat God told him to build was too small.

Joshua is credited in the Old Testament with many cities conquered. Archeologist have since discovered many of these cities were already gone ansd destroyed earlier.

And there is tons more evidence it's fiction. Homers Illyad has more truth in it.

Now you're wondering how do I know all this? Spend all day watching Discovery, History, National Geographic, etc.

I have seen some versions of it with foot notes that actually refute the claims in the passages and saw one such being used in a church.

I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any Church that I know of. My own mind is my own Church. [Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason]

Jefferson is far cooler than Paine. He actually rewrote the NT while leaving out all the miracles.

Its not a contest, was Jefferson ever placed in jail for his beliefs? Paine used Reason as a sword and has inspired me through my entire life to go against the grain of public thought. However, I am also a big fan of Jefferson, he is partially responsible for US having good strains of amarijuana as he travelled to China and brought back good seeds to grow here and did so illegally.

gallup asked the same question 2 years later and came up with 33%

http://www.gallup.com/poll/27682/one...ally-true.aspx

moreover, a higher % of people in europe take the bible literally.

The difference between the two polls can largely be explained by sheer stupidity: in the Rasmussen poll, it was a "yes or no" question, in the Gallup poll, several interpretations were given and the subjects got to choose one.

But consider that according to another Gallup poll 44% of Americans believe that God created humanity in its present form somewhere in the past 10,000 years.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/21814/Evo...nt-Design.aspx

I'd say that's a sign of taking the bible pretty damn literally, wouldn't you?

Humans = idiots
Idiots love religion
Uneducated people = fat
Americans = fat idiots

Most of humanity are very very very shallow headed fools who take everything at face value. The poorer the country the more religious it seems. I mean if you're starving, why not ask an invisible man in the sky for water and food? What have you got to lose at that point? Then when someone comes and feeds you - it's God's will. So so so simple to see why people believe in it all.

No, you're right they aren't. They'd rather use bombs from a distance.
USA: 100,000+ civilians killed in a country that didn't bomb us
Iraq: 0

I hate fanatics of all flavors, but at least the Atheists are basing their beliefs on logic.

Organized religion is nothing but a way to control people by removing their need to be responsible for their own actions, while calming their fear of death by promising a better place afterwards.

dude.... you have no idea... I live in Billy Graham land where, literally, people who never met him go to his grave and pray over his body in the hopes that his godliness (even in death) will help them get their prayers answered... I am not joking.

It is not. I lived in the US for 30+ years and only met 2 "born again" bible thumping Christians in my life...... both who were obviously insane and were generally regarded as such by everyone else. The polling data is bullshit. Anyone who has spent time in the US knows the number is likely closer to 6%.

Billy Graham is still alive, care to explain how people pray over his grave? If you're gonna make it up, at least be factual to some extent.

Nation-x is never one to let the facts get in the way of whatever point he is trying to make.

I'm all for debate. But at the end of any religious debate I have ever had with anyone the final comment from the religion-tard is always a very angry and abrasive "YA well I have faith."

You can't win when you're faced with that and when you hear it you know the stupid has won and consumed them.

I think stories like Noah's Arc might have been included, partly so that people would understand that everything in the book is not to be taken literally. Unfortunately, people aren't that smart.

Yea his inability to hate Christians to your standards definitely proves that he is narrow minded.

no kidding, delusional is what Id say.

Christians have killed more people in the name of their religion than anyone else. And when it comes to terrosism, well, recently, a christian shot a man in CHURCH because he was a doctor who performed abortions.

yeah, they are so nice

I wonder how many people the communist killed in the last century?.

The People's Pepublic of China from 1949 to the present. The death toll there is 73,327,000.
The death toll in the USSR from 1922-1991 was 56,627,000
The death toll in Russian Soviet Republic from 1918-1922 was 3,284,000
The death toll in The Democratic Peoples Repulic of from 1948 to present Korea is 3,163,000.
The death toll in Cambodia from 1975-1987 was 2,627,000
The death toll in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan from 1978-1982 was 1,750,000.
The death toll in Vietnam from 1975-to present is 1,670,000
The death toll in the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from 1974-1991 was 1,343,610.
The death toll in Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from from 1945-1972 was 1,072,00.
The death toll in Chinese Soviet Republic from 1931-1934 was 700,000.

This list is just the top ten death toll of in countries who believed in the non religon of communism. In total Communism murdered 149,469,610 people. If you include the murders by the Nazis, that would be another 50,000,000 people added to this list.

I guess the belifs of Marx has really paid of so far. Hell! the crusades can't even come close to this number of murders.
