effective marketing methods changing from traditional to social

a very interesting trend ive been noticing, it seems like these days, in order to be able to get the attention of people, you have to get them on a social level, which i think takes more time and thinking than just throwing money together for some ads, also a more genuine product, i see this trend continuing

i started thinking about it when i read this article, not many things are able to change my view on a subject. Traditional methods of marketing like banner ads on a page are going to have a lot less impact on people then things like their friends recommendations, as a banner ad in front of somebodies eyes is a function of a companies willingness to spend, versus a relevant suggestion based on needs with no monetary agenda.

The people will eventually make the systems smarter and the emphasis will become on becoming much better than your competitors and adding value.

Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network's Plan to Dominate the Internet ? and Keep Google Out

To understand Facebook's challenge to Google, consider my friend and neighbor Wayne, a PhD in computer science from UC Berkeley and a veteran of many big-time programming jobs. I know a lot about him because we are friends. I know even more because we are Facebook friends. On his online profile, I not only find the standard personal-blog-type information?his birthday, address, résumé, and pictures of his wife, son, and step-kids. I also discover that he likes to make beer, that he had dinner at one of my favorite restaurants last week, and that he likes to watch cartoons. Indeed, he has posted something about his life almost every day for the past two months?wondering whether his son's Little League game will get rained out, asking his friends what the impeller in his central heating unit does.

But if I type Wayne's name into Google, I learn very little. I am directed to an old personal Web site, with links that have almost all expired, and a collection of computer-science papers he has written over the years. That's about it.

Why settle for articles about the Chrysler bankruptcy that the Google News algorithm recommends when you can read what your friends suggest? Already, Facebook is starting to horn in on Google's role as the predominant driver of Web traffic.

Agreed, we're in the process of launching our first 2 social networks for porn at the moment, http://www.twittadult.com and http://www.twittgay.com for this very reason, social networking or marketing on places like MySpace, FaceBook and Twitter are going to leave traditional methods behind i think.

If your target market is the 25 and under crowd primarily, yes.

The vast majority of stats I have seen, and people I have talked to, over 25 do not spend endless hours on social networks, tweeting, and the rest. They are too busy with work and families.

It is not to say EVERYONE over 25 does not use these things. However, the vast majority I have seen in statistics do not use them daily, if at all. I do not know about you, but I wanna target the audience who can PAY for my sites and services.

I think most people are missing the whole point as to why these social networks are gaining market share as far as views go. In the case of twitter its no longer for the social aspect of the service, but moreso for the speed of delivery when it comes to new information.

Its the world in real time

But this too will pass. At the end of the day the internet is just like real life and the non verified, unstable ramblings on networks such as twitter do not provide the solid feel of acurate information like traditional static websites. So when people need a real answer they go to a real source... google

i want to figure out strategies to access my target audiences long-term for the lowest cost possible so we are on the same page

i think with the latest neilson report, they were saying that the older crowd was integrating more frequently into the social networks, but yes, whatever it takes to get in front of them

The new twitter localization API definitely added momentum to the thesis of this thread. As one poster at GFY here observed: Google's new caffeine platform has less to do with the threat posed by Bing and more to do with the whole new possibilities embodied by Twitter.

That logic works two ways... young folks may not have as much money but older people don't use computers as much or often at all, or for anything other than email.

FB/Twitter, etc have hundreds and hundreds of millions of people over the age of 25.
