How can you keep a remote employee from spending loads of time on facebook?

One of our designers who works remotely has had mouth diarrhea about all the games he plays on Facebook lately, and since the time he started talking about it so much he's turned in less work, and more infrequently. And he posts updates to his account more than a 13 year old girl.

I haven't talked to him about it yet, I'd like to have a gameplan before I do. Any ideas?

Once everyone is finished updating their Facebook profiles, they'll be here to give some input.

Well, if he isn't getting his work done, I think that pretty much sums it up.

If he wants to spend so much time on Facebook, why not grant him his wish.

He clearly thinks it's just as important if not more so than work, so tell him he can have as much time as he wants on it now, as you don't require him anymore.

give him some guidelines - i think it is healthy to allow him to periodically to take a break and surf the web - just give him a time range - no more then 30 minutes of surfing the web per day

Okay thanks, I'm definitely going to talk to him but I know that talk only goes so far, if he feels he can get away with it he'll probably try. And I don't want to fire him, he's one of our better guys and has been with us for years. Haven't heard of eblaster, I'll check it out

Talk to him about it. I always take an upfront approach w/ my guys. I don't care how much time they spend on facebook, as long as their work doesn't suffer. Also I tell my guys that I don't mind them doing personal things on work time as long as they are prepared to do things for work on their personal time. I always give more leway to employees who aren't afraid to stay late or work on shit from home.

Give him the chance to turn himself around and if he still feels that facebook aps are more important than a paycheck then there's your answer.

Ok, gotta get back to Restaurant City..

Tell him if he wants to get paid to get his work done. Tell him you could care less how much time he spends dicking around on Facebook as long as he gets his work done. The minute the work isn't getting done and because of social networking interference he doesn't get paid.

I'm more of a Bingo person. : )

Most remote employees are on quotas or commission of some sort. Usually remotes tend to work more often because the more they work the more commission they get.

I use to work remote and currently am in the office with three remote reps. They know what's expected of them, if they can fit in Facebook to that as well, more power to them.

I've owned several business before i got into adult and had mostly independent contractors rather than employees for many reasons, but the least of which was the IC they signed detailed what the requirements were and WHEN THEY HAD TO BE MET BY for them to get paid, and if they didnt meet those they didnt get paid...have you tried to give him a daily checklist to keep him on point???

I think I'll tell him to chill, and I'll just load him up with more work, and require it's completed on a schedule.. squeeze his time more. And if he gets upset, oh well.. he shouldn't have tipped me off to it.
