For some odd reason this made me laugh. I side with the bank, by the way.

MIAMI (Reuters) ? A bank in Florida refused to cash a check for an armless man because he could not provide a thumbprint.

"They looked at my prosthetic hands and the teller said, 'Well, obviously you can't give us a thumbprint'," Steve Valdez told CNN on Wednesday.

But he said the Bank of America Corp branch in downtown Tampa, Florida, still insisted on a thumbprint identification for him to cash a check drawn on his wife's account at the bank, even though he showed them two photo IDs.

In the incident last week, a bank supervisor told Valdez he could only cash the check without a thumbprint if he brought his wife in with him or he opened an account with them.

"I told them I neither wanted an account with them and couldn't bring my wife in because she was nowhere close by," Valdez told CNN.

Bank of America said in a statement cited by CNN: "While the thumbprint is a requirement for those who don't have accounts, the bank should have made accommodations."

Valdez said his treatment by the bank violated the U.S. Americans with Disability Act requiring institutions to provide reasonable accommodation to disabled persons.

I have a hard time here. I mean if Banks just rolled over and accommodated then who's to say he was a legit person with a legit piece of business to take care of instead of a thief.

Then again, what if the poor fuck was just a vet that got his torso blown to shreds and then came back to the USA to be treated like a 3rd class citizen.

This is a hard one indeed.

Be nice if they said what kind of ID's, and did they doubt them. But they didnt, so I'm going to infer from that that there was no disputing the ID's and that everything about them matched records perfectly. They simply weren't budging on procedure despite all of that, in which case the bank may technically be correct, but procedures should be reviewed. It's gotta be extremely rare, so they can afford to give this guy a free toaster or something.

Different scenario.

A lady friend was in the hospital and she was told it would probably be about a two week stay for her. She called me and asked me to come up and get her social security check...cash it and pay her bills for her. She does not have a bank account and cashes her check at the local Safeway and has been cashing it there for years. She gave me her drivers license and social security card and a note giving me permission to cash it...so I went up to Safeway. They refused to cash it and told me that she was the only one that could cash it. I explained why she could not and told them that they could call the hospital and speak with her...they would not budge...even though they actually knew who she was.

I ended up paying her bills out of pocket. To some people policy is not to be bent.

You could say the same thing about any transaction though.. His transaction doesnt become suspicious because he cant provide a thumbprint. The fact that BofA has a "thumbprint" requirement but never had any apparent process for people with no thumbs is ridiculous though.
