safe deposit boxes...

so as i'd said in another thread, i've recently switched banks to TD Trust (which would mean nothing to most of you other than Canadians). they just give you a s.d.b if you maintain a minimum balance, so i was like, why the fuck not? anyway, it's quite the experience, not ever having had one before. HUGE vault, then the manager's key, plus your key to open the box (old school looking keys too, look like something out of the 1800's lol), then they close the vault door and leave you alone.

i did this earlier this evening (they are open until 8 pm), and it was a bit of trip, felt like being in a movie lol. my question for the ballers here, is what the hell to put in it? i can only come up with: my passport while not traveling, a harddrive back up of my laptop, second copy of my will, and a rolex i never wear (tacky, and not something i purchased myself). don't have any jewlery or bricks of gold. maybe the keys to my 911 when it's parked for the winter?

maybe i'll just keep it empty and never use it at all...

some cities allow you to hold documents of real estate holdings but it's smarter to keep them on file with the city

stock and bond certificates if you have them issued?

i never thought it was a good place to hide cash...........

yeah the real estate thing i have copies of, but they are on file anyway, so no big deal or reason to.

yeah, don't think i'd ever actually put money in it, though i guess some people do? and i was just joking about the baller thing (i know, captain obvious).

gfy password is a must though.

Years ago I was in the construction industry and we did a substantial amount of work for banks. On one project we were doing major rennovation work on a bank branch in a bad neighborhood. That bank had a vault with safe deposit boxes.

The door was brought in with a crane because it was so heavy. A couple feet thick, solid metal, five or six different security measures to prevent anyone from being able to open it and all kinds of surveilance gear designed to monitor anyone who went near it. It was the most impressive door I have ever seen anywhere.

The walls however were plain sheetrock! That's right.... It would take a thief hours, or even days, to get access through that magnificent vault door - but any 12 year old girl was strong enough to shove her first right through the wall into the vault!

I would look at it like this. If it has the room put anything in it that you would not be able to easily replaced if your home ever burned down (or flooded or was just generally destroyed) like maybe a hardcore copy of all your user/pass for different sites/services, backups of software, any kind of documents like car titles or receipts/warranties for large ticket items like bigscreen tvs or anything like that you may have purchased. It doesn't have to be a valueable item, but if it is something that would be a pain in the ass to replace it might be worth putting in it. Hell, I have one and I have about 4 DVDs in it that are nothing but all the music CDs I have bought over the years burned to MP3 and then backed up on the DVDs. If something ever happened to my house replacing them would be time consuming and a in some cases nearly impossible (for out of print stuff)

if you have to goto a bank to get it - the box would be blocked like the bank account
