![]() I've been having this bad streak recently and its getting worse. This morning I get a phone call at 8am from an unknown number. I'm not getting out of bed to answer it, so I forget and check the voicemail later.
Well its PP&L saying that they believe my electric meter was not working properly for the past 3 months, so they are going to charge me the difference in this month compared to the past three months totaling $274!!! This is complete bullshit! In May I got rid of our POS fridge that came with the apt that sucked electricity and got a new energy efficient one. During the summer we had the windows open and didn't run the AC that much. This month its been cold so I had the heat on which uses a lot of electricity. So now, Im stuck paying this $274 bucks because they believe there was an error on their meter? get the fuck out ![]()

Thats not right. You should be able to escalate this issue to someone in that department. Explain to them your energy saving methods and demand proof that the meter was faulty.

I would fight it. That was their mistake, not yours. You also have a state utility Board, I don't know if you can actually complain to this authority about utilities, but you may be able to. Look into that, if they do take complaints, you can mention to your electric company that you will be taking it to the utility Board.

So what happens if this month your energy bill is inline with the previous months?
Do they claim the meter is still broken? |

You can fight it, often that requires you to put the full amount in an escrow account though. Really sucks on big fuck ups.
Would not be hard to arrange for the amount to be spread out over a period of time. Especially since it is a surprise bill and allthough not your fault, if you used it you need to pay for it (most terms work that way). I just know to not get hostile on the phone. Work your way up the chain of supervisors and managers. You will find a partial resolution you can live with that way - at least until they can monitor your usage better to see what was up. I know most utility companies do keep records on such things as the high and low temps of each day, etc. Helps them plan as well. Same records can help figure this all out.

I just got a call back from a "supervisor" who faxed me the readings and how they calculate their costs.
April: $128 May: $122 June: $91 July: $8 August : $8 Sept: $49 <- replaced meter in mid Sept. The $8 is the minimum they charge (its actually like $8.19). I explained to them that in early June, I had my AC replaced with a new energy efficient one and did the same with my refrigerator. However, they are looking at estimates from LAST year with the old equipment was was $160+ a month and plus June and July was really hot. They said they are charging me $137.43 for July and August, $46.73 for June (because they think this is when it broke) and $95.32 for September for an average usage of $145.63/mo ![]() Here is the fucked up part... since they replaced the meter in mid September, my average usage is approx $3.12 per day... thats $93 a month! After fighting with them for the last 30 minutes, they "adjusted" my bill according to the $93/mo and they can't "credit" me the difference of what they charged me ($270+, plus what they havent charged me yet for the partial months) so they will credit my account with over $200. Fucking WOW, I cant believe they are allowed to operate like this. They said they even compare usage to other apartment units near by. Most are occupied with families with kids who obviously use more. Never dull...

I did ask what happens if I didnt say anything and they said their system automatically recognizes charges like this after a 3 month period, but sometimes it dosent catch it and people are given HUGE bills for past usage

You got it adjusted to 93 a month. They also checked comps of units near by. Yeah a family may use more overall electricty but say AC wise - about the same.
