The new autoupgrade overwrites default theme files, so, if you have modified a default theme (as opposed to putting in a whole new theme), you need to rename it or back it up and reupload it after upgrading or do a manual upgrade.

so if I used a theme that doesnt come with wordpress it still overwrites the theme file or is it with the package themes that come with a out of the box installation?

Just the out of the box themes I think. Like, if you edit an out of the box theme, it will basically revert with the autoupgrade. If you have a totally different theme, named something different from the defaults, it seems to be fine, from what I've seen so far.

no offense, but that is just stupidity.

Of course it will overwrite it.

Always use a new folder for your theme, I have had clients do this too, such a mistake.

Actually, I think the only other remotely recent iteration of WordPress which overwrote default themes was when widgets were first added.

If you've had clients make this error, I don't think it is stupidity to warn people that this iteration of WordPress will nuke default theme edits.

this is why I don't auto update. The wp-content folder and the wp-config.php are supposed to be left untouched. I'm old school like that and as a result never have a problem with things getting overwritten.
