California OUTLAWS big screen televisions!

In a state that clearly needs to get it's shit together they have now gone even wackier and started the TV police.

"In a move that could spell the end of the plasma TV industry as we know it, the state of California agreed today to enact strict regulations on the amount of power televisions can consume, effectively outlawing most large plasma TVs as of January 1, 2011, with many more televisions set to be banned beginning January 1, 2013"

omg never thought that such a stupid law could be possible in the US. In germany there is a similar stupid law, normal bulbs are no longer available, only energy-saving bulbs.

I'm curious how many of you guys actually read the article. I think it's a good thing. It will impact pretty much nobody except the electronics companies and will reduce energy consumption at the same time. Many of the electronics companies are already capable of meeting the new energy efficiency standards. If anything, it is pushing energy hogs off the market and bringing the efficient ones into the market.

It sounds like most TV's fall into the guidelines, so it might effect those 3 people that own a 100 incher.

Anyway, isn't Plasma a dying technology? I thought everyone was moving to LCD because it looks just as good and suck way less juice. It also works better in every kind of room lighting, weighs less, costs less, etc.

are you going to believe the person that posted this without actually READING what has been passed or using LOGIC?

Let me use a brighter shade of crayon for the confused ones.

TVs are becoming more and more efficient every year. By the time this law take effect only the most cheap ass POS TVs will not be in compliance. Why would you want one of those anyways.

Quote:
For example, Panasonic's 54-inch VIERA plasma TV would be allowed to draw 281 watts of power in "on mode." Today that set is rated to draw 293 watts of power. Smaller plasmas are generally OK under the 2011 specs, but virtually all of them fall short when put up against the 2013 rules. That same 54-inch plasma will be required to draw only 175 watts once 2013 arrives, a power reduction that just might not be possible.
Just because this tard doesn't think it's possible doesn't mean it's not. Now if improvements cause power cosumption to drop 23% every 18 months by 2013 that 293 watt TV will only only use 173 watts. 2 watts under the law.

Also TV using less power means less drain on the electrical grid which means less power pants needed. Guess who would have paid for those new power plants that needed to be built Einsteins?

Quote:
All told, the new rules are expected to save 6,515 Gigawatt-hours annually in the state, save the state $8.7 billion in costs for additional power plants, and save consumers $8.1 billion a year in lower energy bills.
My math says that's $225 for every man woman and child in California. You don't like saving money?

If you weigh the pros vs cons based on the things in my post, yes its better -- even if the plasma picture is just a little better(??), it's not discernible to the eye of most people, and doesn't make it a must buy just for that point alone.

Plasmas suck anyway. It's like watching tv through a reflective glass window. LCDs are far superior.

Well...I don't personally own either type...but I have seen both types and I personally give the LCD a slight edge on picture quality over the Plasma...but you are right...Plasma owners will probably defend the Plasma until they are blue in the face.

The article doesn't make it clear whether it's banning the SALE of new TVs that don't fit the bill, or banning the use of EXISTING TVs... if it's the latter then people may be forced to upgrade twice, once in 2011, then again in 2013...

One comment also points out that standby consumption could be more significant in low usage situations. Why not educate people to encourage switching off of phantom loads rather than legislating like this?

Well that's why I wouldn't be worried. TVs by 2013 will be under that requirement anyways. And the savings Californians will have by reduced consumption of electricity, well I'm not sure why anyone would be mad about that. California has been passing laws like this forever. People know this and if they really don't like it they should move because it's not going to change anytime soon. Almost any state they move to will have a lower cost of living anyways.

It's the SALE.

The rules mandate that televisions sold in California starting in 2011 consume 33 percent less electricity than current models and 49 percent less by 2013. The regulations affect TVs that are 58 inches wide and less

Also note any TVs over 58 inches are exempt.

That's one point and most people would agree with you. I don't, because I have different experiences and try to conserve energy for a few reasons. In the end there are those who will love the law and those who will hate it. Who knows how it will even impact most people, if at all.

are you going to believe the person that posted this without actually READING what has been passed or using LOGIC?

Let me use a brighter shade of crayon for the confused ones.

TVs are becoming more and more efficient every year. By the time this law take effect only the most cheap ass POS TVs will not be in compliance. Why would you want one of those anyways.

My math says that's $225 for every man woman and child in California. You don't like saving money?
thx but I've read the article before I posted my answer.
Why, because I already own my plasma since 1 year, it's a great TV and I don't want to buy a newer TV before the old one is broken... Because I am so satisfied with my TV that I would buy the same again in few years (if there will be a shop that still sells these).
And no as long as electricity is affordable I would use my 480watt TV (but never mind, I don't live in california) .. and no Iam not so confused as you maybe think GatorB thx

I'm curious if you all are complaining about new car efficiency standards as well.

You wouldn't have to give up your current TV and buy a new one to be compliant. The new regulations would be for all TVs sold after that date.

Other than my health issues...I do not have any complaints...but then again I do not consider myself to be smart...just average...which is clearly a notch above you.
