Went out to the desert last night (pics)

Decided to take advantage of this moon (or lack thereof) and play with the camera a bit. Here are a couple of my favorite shots.

There's no moon is these shots,
And there's nobody mooning their ass, either,
I feel like this is a rare thread,
It seems it's not even obscene at all,
It can even go in a museum hall.

Depends on the pic you are talking about. I think I can look it up if you specify the pic.

I think most I posted were like 30 seconds and 3200 ISO.

Damn, bad luck. I even managed to see one in Paris (land of light pollution).
BTW, drop your ISO down to something like 200 or so. Your photos will take longer, but will be much less noisy, and the colours will be a bit more saturated. That, and if you're shooting 15 - 20m exposures, you'll get lovely star trails.

I'm itching to get out and do some more night shots... it's coming into summer so it's the best kind of weather (not so cold that the lens fogs, not so hot that the image is excessively noisy)

It's midnight here. I'm going to see what's outside.

Wouldn't you need a remote release/bulb exposure for that? Even the veritable Canon 1 series is limited to a 30 second maximum shutter speed...

My Canon timer is busted but it still functions as a remote release by plugging it in, then unplugging it sometime later.

It's practically impossible to meter over 30 seconds accurately, so that's why nothing goes over.

Yeah, you'll need a remote release and throw it in bulb mode. Neither hard nor expensive. Stick it on F5.6 - F8, open it up, have a few beers and close the shutter when you remember it 2 hours later :D

Thanks. Was reading about star trails and we got some, but I was not impressed with my results. If I could get some like these my opinion would likely change.

Good question. goodgirl thinks it was from a car that came by while I initially thought it was from the light from my trunk being open. Cool result either way.

Actually, in the bulb mode if you manually hold the shutter button down it will stay open until you release it. Then I found out goodgirl had her remote with her so we did play with that a little.

Next time I will use quantum-x's suggestion of the 200 ISO.

So much to learn.

I do test shots at ISO1600 then drop back down to 200 or 100 and adjust the exposure time (8X and 16X) accordingly.

It was more fun on slide film, you had to use intuition and experience to decide on an appropriate exposure... or sit on your bum while you manually bracket shots. ;)

Then there's the lone car headlights at 2am or the sky clouding over at 4:15am to ruin your careful planning...

Very nice! I don't think a standard DSLR would be able to do that unfortunately, since the shutter would need to be open for several hours. I guess it might be possible if you had a way of powering the camera externally.

From memory you get the tight/closed circle effect if you point the lens north or south.
