Hi y'all, I am writing an info piece concerning alternative billing, and have noticed that some sites accept checks as a payment method.

Which companies facilitate this process and is it viable? Or is it a case of consumers sending checks via mail?

BTW, in UK, checks, or cheques as they are known here, are to be phased out entirely by 2018...

How many legitimate US-based surfers use ACH, when every bank issues a Visa or MC debit card with their account?

For me the fraud risk outweighed the benefits.

Yes, in fact, at least 1/3 rd of on line check transactions do get returned. (or never get thru) depending on the biller used.

However, the remaining 70% have about double the retention rate of credit card signups.

Simple fact is, you are leaving money on the table if you don't do it. Roughly about 5% more of what you're grossing without it.

That's where DirectDebit from WebBilling comes in, no check and all you need is a bank account...

FACT: If you have good content pirates will join via a check, rip your stuff and it will be over torrents and rapidshare before you even find out it bounced. So off the bat you have 30%. Now, figure in the damage that checks allow, and, the fees (which im sure you pay even if one fails or bounces) and you are looking at a miniscule profit margin. Also, all the pissed off affiliates who see tons of returns and negative amounts will leave you. So are checks still profitable? HELL NO.

Hey Jacques, I now work with several companies in the alternative billing space including PbP still, but currently focussing on Ukash, not least since they have a unique product and are only just moving into adult...

Giving Vegas a miss this year, but probably will go to Barcelona, boy I love that city!

Hi there, checks are less then 1% of our business. We do not get a high ratio of returns, WTS (achbill) does well converting this avenue.

I figure you may as well have all options then not as long as it doesn't confuse your surfer on the join page.

but cant pirates join via cc and chargeback?

the rebills are good with checks if they dont get returned

Did you try it without checks to compare? 5% more would be nice, but what if cc sales went down the same 5%? It would mean less profit because of the % of check fraud.

I used to. Cut them off years ago. Too many people bouncing, or returning, checks back then..... and that was in a GOOD economy!

I don't even promote sponsors that offer only checks. I can't understand why anyone under 65 insists in using them.

Problem with checks for us is that the person can join with a rubber check and be long gone before the ACH peeps find out about it. The ACH peeps give the surfer INSTANT access to your site and you have to hope and pray the check is good and your site is not getting ripped.
