Star Trek was the 'most pirated movie' of 2009

Thats a huge fan base !!!

The latest Star Trek film was illegally downloaded more than 10 million times in 2009, according to an internet blog site that monitors file-sharing.

The figures suggest it is 2009's most pirated film, ahead of Transformers sequel Revenge of the Fallen.

Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla was the third most pirated movie, with The Hangover and Twilight completing the top five.

The TorrentFreak blog reports on peer-to-peer activity which uses BitTorrent file-sharing software.

BitTorrent is one of the most popular means of transferring large files over the internet.

Other films featured in the list of most illegally downloaded titles include sci-fi thriller District 9 and the sixth Harry Potter adventure.

But X-Men Origins: Wolverine ranks fairly low in the Top 10, despite an unfinished version of the film appearing online ahead of its release.

So.... if those 10 million "fans" paid 10 bucks instead, they would have 100 millions to make another movie.

no, as there would be a percentage who would have never paid for it, but if they can get it for free, they will.

The movie still earned almost 400 million from theaters, and it was the 5th highest grossing movie of 2009.

edit: agent488 beat me to it.

I watched it in the theater but the popcorn bitches were too slow so I missed the beginning. I downloaded it to catch the missing minutes.

So my 10 bucks don't count.

Also since I paid 15 bucks or so for 60 cents worth of soda and popcorn I should get a free blue-ray of the damn thing.

Avatar has only been out for 12 days, and it's already almost to 700 million in gross from theater sales.

Even if their "pirated download" numbers make it to 100 million. The movie will still be the top grossing movie of 2009, and have been extremely successful.

Most of those people most likely saw the movie 1 or more times at the theater any way.

And this gives them the right to download and share it with the world.

If I buy a trial membership to a porn site should I be allowed to download the full members area, zip it up and share it on a torrent site?

The DVD came with a special digital copy. I see plenty of links to the 'Hangover' out there, that one could be a contender.

comparing mainstream media that people go on dates to vs. porn which is usually enjoyed privately -- is not a very apples to apples comparison. that being said, the studios have a larger enforcement budget than most porn companies.

that being said, despite being the most pirated movie start trek still lead in dvd sales and rentals, which is a more private experience that theaters, much like porn viewing.

also a large enforcement budget doesn't mean anything here, as it was the most pirated movie or 2009.

the real question is why do people still but the dvd of the most pirated movie of 2009?

ok I will admit it, a family member actually gave me a copy of this new Star Trek, and guess what....

im so interested in it, I probably wont even watch it once... the same family member gave me a copy of Trandformers:Revenge, total trash wouldnt spend a dime on it, only reason I watched it was because someone gave me the DVD, otherwise it is all trash.

Hollywood is looking at this as 100% lost revenue, but Star Trek is one of those movies though that has a fan base that will go to see it in the theatre often more than once and will also shell out to see it in imax again and again. I would not be surprised if there is a major overlap with people who downloaded it online and people who paid to see it.

I wouldn't be surprised if half of the kids that grabbed a bootleg were just using it to help hold them over until they went and bought the bluray.

bored and about to leave house,.... regarding those who pirate movies. As my grandmother would say, "Bless his heart, but he is an ass."

I have this family member, maybe you guys have one too? He only comes around during family visit type holidays and stuff, but everytime, never fails, he brings "movies I thought youd like."

he gives me DVDs of the most stupidest shit, I tell him over and over: "all i watch is horror and samurai flicks man" he keeps bringing me ben Affleck shit. The guy must sit around for day sburning DVDs, he brings me and my brothers and mom and everyone movies. Sound familiar?

Anyway, he gave me Star trek, i just smile and say "thanks" but in actuality i use his DVD gifts as coasters. This breed of DVD burner will never be stopped by laws or FBi warnings. These guys are the ones going to put the movie industry to a hault? LOL

I have a friend who does this too. It's always the most worthless shit. Don't ask for it, I don't want it, but I dunno- it just seems cruel to not accept it. Sometimes I'll tease him like, "Dude, really? Walk Hard?!" or I'll say, "Sometimes I think you don't even know me" and laugh at what he's brought, but the hits just keep on coming anyway. They usually float around the coffee table / ottoman for a month or two where other friends can grab them if they want and take them home, or they are used as coasters until eventually I get tired of looking at them and throw them away.

It's not offensive, I just don't get why he does it.
