Explaining why to register yourname.com to someone - GoFuckYourself.com

How do you explain the importance of registering yourname.com to a non-internet savvy person?

Two years ago, I told this chick to register hername.com since it was available. She was becoming a tad famous (on a fairly popular TV show for example), and I was worried someone would register her name and she wouldn't get it. I realized she didn't have clue how to register it, and therefore I registered it for her, and waited for the day when she wanted it. Two years later that day came.

About 2 months ago, she called and finally wanted a website and wanted her domain. Without question, I offered to turn it over to her for free, and even offered free hosting. Again, this chick is computer-clueless and I don't care about the $18 I spent on the domain to hold it for her until she was ready for it.

Instead, rather than viewing it as a favor, she was upset that I would register it and thought that I should just have let it free so she could register it.

How do you explain to a regular person, that leaving a domain, unregistered, is dangerous and stupid. I think she doesn't realize that yes, someone would register her name and try to sell it back to her for $3000. "Why would someone register it - it's my name not theirs?"

I equate leaving a desireable domain unregistered to be like leaving $3000 on a park bench for any schmuk to take. If you went downtown and put $3000 on a park bench of course someone would take it. If you are on TV, and you do not register you name, of course someone will take it and try to sell it back to you. We know that, but how do I get that message across to someone that is not aware of how lucrative, underhanded and cut-throat domain-squatting is?

I have no intention of selling her domain to her for $3000 - she can have it for free, yet someone else would have. I did it to protect the name until she was ready for it - yet her lack of understanding of domain squatting makes me look like the bad guy.

Suggestions?

Tell her to fuck off. Like most women, the greedy, selfish bitch stared the gift horse in the mouth without realizing she was getting a free ride.

Or take the high road. Tell her you were wrong to think that her brain functioned beyond the canine level, and that you will let the domain expire - after which she is free to register it for her own use. And tell her its not necessary to thank you for protecting her interests over the last couple years.

Or put her domain name online with a pic of ******* on the index page.

The first domain I bought was my name. Dumb bitches are too busy sucking dick for coke or swinging off poles like monkeys in a zoo to think beyond where their next fix (or even their next drink) is coming from.

mine was already taken in 1997 (common Italian last name), but I did purchase my wifes name .com and many people I know purchase their kids names also.

I do have my name with my middle name in it and might let it expire. I have way too many domains. Watch it become some gay bareback site.

Tell her that if she wants it she will have to fork over $3000, and if she doesn't, she'll have to go through the domain dispute process which will entail further time and cost. I think she'll quickly understand why from that point on.

I own the domain name for one of my attorneys. Been waiting for years for him to try to buy it.

On another note....I also registered the domain for a model who fucked me over a few years back. I put some colorful comments on the site. Turns out a D.C. attorney by the same name was not too happy about it.

Give her the Artie Lange example. Many years ago when he was just starting out show business he got a roll on Mad TV. A guy went a registered the names of every cast member on that show. Several years later he wants to start a website and the guy wants 50K for the domain. Artie could fight it, but instead ended up buying a hypendated version.

You can just say, "Would you rather I thought ahead and bought it and am now giving it to you for free, or would you rather I didn't and let someone else buy it and now want a lot of money for it. I did you a favor here."

Also, a friend of mine's wife has a fairly common name. The domain for her name redirects to a celeb porn site

8 years ago I really encouraged a female friend with a not so common first name to register her first name. I told her how lucky she was to have be able to have her own first name as a domain. She finally registered it, but let it drop after a year. I go to that domain a couple years later and its owned by a large corporation who named a computer product the same name.

U did that recently after the day you told her. opening for her a domain account somewhere and putting the domain up and on her name and giving it to her as a friend2friend gesture would have cost just as much time as you spend on making this post.

Yes, she has reason to say what she did say, it involves her own name. You had no right to take it and sit and wait. Of course from business point of view we tend to think a little different. Stupid to let an opportunity like this pass by. But never the less, you crossed a line, for her this is a principal matter.

I would agree with this.....I have many friends that I tell to register thier names and they dont so well its thier fault after explaining but I would never do it for them...in fact I wouldnt even do it and give it to them as a gift...just my 2 cents.
