That's what the old site looks like without the now-ancient warning that we have no idea how to get rid of. Actually, we thought it was finally gone...it stopped showing up for a little while...I guess it's back again.

wdsguy: I'm not expecting any, really...it was just to see if anyone would help out. What I'd really like to do is work. But finding work has been difficult.

Give up posting about this and swallow your pride and go tot he local wlefare office,
In many cases they can work with your landlord or come up with some emergency money.
Also if you do have to go to court make sure you show up.
eviction is not automatic, everything depends on where you live.
but looking for an answer here is pretty much useless

I lived in PR for over a year and I know that it's DIRT CHEAP to live there....You can rent a house easily for 300 a month so if you're in the hole 3,000 after only two and a half months, then you're gonna have a problem.

I also know that renters don't do any background checks in PR.....If you have the money to move and they like your face, you're in.....

Go into town and rent a cheap house....

Wouldn't it be smart to move back to the U.S. where you can at least collect disability (since you are disabled)? It's not a ton of money but at least it's something coming in every month.

You can collect disability/social security/etc. right there in PR. It's a US territory.

I wasn't sure on that. Then he should be collecting that. Married and with a kid, you could be pulling at least $500/month and most likely much more. Not saying that solves the problem but if you had signed up months ago you'd have had some money to take the sting off.

My wife and I have been struggling for the past few months to keep our house. We used to have a decent job that paid well, but it ended in March 2009 due to the company's boneheaded decisions (they lost contracts with companies down here in PR due to their refusal to adapt to the hispanic market). Since then, we have had problems finding work, but somehow always managed to pull it off. Well, we're now about 2 1/2 months behind on our rent, and the owner of our house called earlier tonight and told me that if we don't come up with the rent by tomorrow then he is going to take us to court. My wife recently found employment with the federal government, but payroll takes awhile to start for new employees so she won't see a paycheck until well into February. I'm disabled so my ability to work is limited and that's why I've been working on my new blog and planning for a video sales site. Of course, lack of money has hindered that plan as well. When I manage to get it running, it WILL be very successful, as I already have a pretty big line of people waiting for it to open. But in the meantime...if we don't come up with almost $3000 by tomorrow evening, we're gonna be homeless. So I'm wondering if there is anyone at all here that would be able to loan us some money to prevent us from losing our home. We literally have nowhere to go if we lose it, and though sure, eviction takes awhile, but once you start down the eviction path, it creates that unrecoverable rift between tenant and landlord. Can anyone help us? I really hate to beg but we're literally out of options here.
Look up stay of eviction, I think this could be a good route for you right now. A stay of eviction will allow you to stay in the home/apartment for months with out having to pay a dime. I think your circumstances would apply to this law.

Hope this helps you some, sorry to hear about you and your wife falling on hard times....there are allot of people in the same boat.

Best wishes and good luck!

Keep us updated

Stay of eviction might be a good idea. Not easy to find info on PR's specific laws for it but I'll keep looking. Thanks for the suggestion.

BVF: We're considering just packing up and moving to Camuy where we can probably find a cheaper house. We just need someplace safe for our kids. While I was in the USA, I was receiving SSI, but that is not available here and I really didn't want to go through the process of getting disability...I wanted to work and still want to work. Right now I'm trying to work out something with the Census office...they'll likely transfer my information over the Bayamon so I can get bumped up on the list over there. Looks like they're really hurting for work this time around since they apparently underhired and are about two weeks behind in the grunt work. My wife was hired for an administrative position but has spent her first week punching holes in papers, stuffing envelopes, and building binders...things that were supposed to have been done already. :D

pocketkangaroo: I'd love to move back to the mainland. :D Wifey doesn't want to though. It sure would be easier for me to find work there.

JimmiDean: Actually, I'm glad I posted here...there are a lot of people who rent out properties on this forum, and a lot of people have given me some good suggestions for where to go next. I take the insults with a block of salt and look for anything positive that might help out so this has been quite useful to me and I thank everyone who's posted something helpful. :D

At some point it doesn't matter what she wants. I'd love to live in Beverly Hills in a mansion but I can't afford to do so. If it's coming to the point where you are asking strangers for money, it's time she re-thought her priorities.

So true, good point. I'll start looking for places on the mainland near someplace that has industry I know I can work in.

Gotta be honest with you dude, the pictures do not help your case-

Forget keeping the house. It's a rental, not a mortgage- leaving it behind all you have to lose is your pride and some nice views. Move in with the wife's fam until you get back on your feet and then get something a little more modest, maybe even buy something so this way if you wind up in another situation where you are both unemployed you can use the equity you've built in your home to keep you afloat.

Her family already lives with us. :D Her sister lives upstairs with us, and her mother lives in the downstairs apartment. When we first looked at the house, it had to be big enough for all of us...five adults and two children (her other sister was involved at the time too, she comes and goes every few months). This was the best house we could find for a decent price. But yeah...we're gonna leave it behind and move out, I think. I've been looking at cheaper properties in Camuy/Hatillo/Arecibo today as well as in southern Florida.

Not to be rude or disparage your situation, but with all these people living in the house how could the rent not be made....unless you and your wife are the only income coming in......

Does anyone else work to contribute to the rent?

My wife and I handle the rent, food, her car, and her phone, and her mother handles utilities and her own car. No one else contributes monetarily. Her sister that's here full-time stays with the kids when we work, which I suppose is worth more than money in the long run since we don't have to pay a babysitter who we would never be able to fully trust and would cost too much. Her other sister...oh man, I don't even wanna get into that mess. Her mother works as a history teacher in Camuy, with a masters in English and a PhD in history...yet she makes less than the average bachelor's degree teacher because the DOE has dragged their feet for the past 5 years in getting teacher raises. The only reason she's stuck it out with them is because they pay for her university classes...otherwise, she would have split for Texas long ago, where she knows she can easily get a job as a bilingual teacher for higher pay.

Your situation draws no sympathy from me. There's 50 million people in the same situation in the US right now (j/k worse actually, you seem to have tons of time to post on the internet), and about 4 billion others on Earth.

Life is rough. Good luck.

Going by what you said earlier at least one out of the two of you has been without steady employment since March of 09. To my mind that kind of eliminates the need for a full time babysitter. Even if everyone was working full time jobs there's no reason with that many family members living under one roof someone couldn't bite the bullet and work nights. It's just really hard to believe, even in this economy, that a household with 5 adults can't find a way to stretch their dollars collectively to cover $850 a mo.

If what you say is true, I'm sorry for your situation, but really all you need to do is find a cheaper place and you and your family will be fine. There's really not a need to be asking for handouts, especially asking for handouts plus "cushion" money. Also, with that many family members it would seem more sensible to ask family (good ol gramps) for money before strangers.

Sorry if I'm coming off as unsympathetic, but I'm a little jaded by all the requests for handouts and in this situation just downgrading your living quarters seems to solve the issue w/ no great financial consequence. It's not as if this is a situation where you're underwater in your mortgage, you're asking for more money than you need and also it seems you have not exhausted all avenues before coming here and asking for $$.

My wife is going to attempt to talk to her grandfather one more time tonight, as he's going to be in Camuy. We've already asked everyone else in the family...and I do mean *everyone*. However, we *had* been finding a way to stretch our dollars to come up with the rent...up until a few months ago. We had always managed to pull it off. Then, things slipped out of control, as they do for many people. Like I said though...we're probably just gonna move out to someplace cheaper. It really is something of a luxury to live here, all things considered...it's just been that it's a great place for our kids. But I'm sure they'll be just fine anywhere as long as we keep them safe.

When people are stressed, sometimes they don't see other possibilities. I know that that's true for me. I guess the best thing to do is just cut our losses and move on, work even harder, and hope for the best.

Share some rooms with each other and take in some borders, nice house should get some people interested. Offer your landlord $1000 per month until it's paid off.
